  • Thenmala Madurai ride

Hello, this is my second write up here. My travelogue may seem too lengthy for a single day ride. Lengthy because the log took shape not in front of my monitor screen. I am just copying this down from my motorcycle diary. Please be patient enough to ride through my whole log.
the trip was done last march.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Last 3 days i was trying to make my home a hell. And yes it was, i was protesting against my parents for not allowing me to go to Dhanushkodi (Rameshwaram) with the Trivandrum xBhp team. I became sad when i knew that the trip slipped away from my hands. Then this sadness changed to odd actions of anger towards my parents, 2 days passed.

With the involvement of an old retired school teacher, staying nearby our house the problems were solved in a temporary way. One day of peace. On the next day evening i told my dad that i want to go for a 1 day road trip which i wished so much with my heart. Such was my addiction to ride on those days!! I told them with so much confidence that they didn’t stand a chance. In a half hearted way, they granted me to go. After giving 1000 rs my papa and mummy told these words-“Go out and enjoy for yourself, but once you come back you should be obedient to us, concentrate on your studies and also you should be happy”

        Now i want to thank:-
        -My parents
-Noel brother (fellow xBhpian) for lending bungee cords to tie the saddle bags.
-‘Avinash thadani’ who inspired me with his South American trip which was published in the orange issue.
        - And to our xBhp team for providing me with anything\everything about motorcycling and shaping the Biker lifestyle within me.

Again the same old story of sleepless night. Can anybody please suggest some tips about how to get sleep on the pre-ride night? I woke up after some sleep and expected the clock to show around 3 or 4 am. But it was only 12:45am. Ha, the Rest was over, just a 2 hour. Without an option I lied on the bed, pushing time. On other days I will be sleeping up to 6 or 7 am even on working days, but today nothing.

I got up from the bed at 2:30 and started getting ready. I packed 3 food packets each containing bread&jam, egg pulsae & biscuits for myself and helpless poor people if I find any.

When i took my bike out from the car poach, the clock showed 5.10 AM. My dad bid me best wishes, mom was still sleeping, and didn’t wake her up. Unlike some of my trips, I felt a little more confident since I was going with the consent of my parents...Click image for larger version

This was my travel plan- Trivandrum>> Madurai via NH208 (thenmala hills) >> and back Home through the NH7 via kanyakumari.

Filled petrol for 550 rs and I was happy to see the golden liquid in the tank from the top. Also for the first time my bike’s fuel gauge showed full bars. It felt like a long awaited wish came true.

Left the city boundary and started climbing the hills. It was still dark, at some places fog was passing through the road. There weren’t any streetlights. I was going slowly and with caution.

Soon it was morning; Sun’s rays had spread the light. Suddenly I saw a dusty path adjacent to the road going up through the woods. Took a detour and rode through that path a little distance. It was a dusty, gravel path.

Entered Thenmela Ecotourism road. Saw some small monkeys, when I walked towards one of the lonely monkeys, he ran off. Then came the saddle dam of thenmala reservoir. I took the bike onto the high wall road overlooking the dam.
It was a very beautifull view of the lake and the forest hills. Nice pleasant winds was blowing against my face and there was absolute silence all around. The only sound was that of the small water tides. And I felt the pleasure of being in solitude. A new and different feeling I felt, which made me to stay there longer and a sense of Being with Nature. Was I nostalgic or dreaming?i don’t know, but I stood there for a long time.

Sound of some vehicles on the road down made me come back to my senses. I thought to myself, Oh there is a long way to go, Better speed up!!!

The security officers said the park opens after 9 am. I was not in a mood to enter the park or to spent time enjoying since this was a single day ride and i had to cover more than 600 kms. Before continuing i didnt forget to fill my stomach –dosai with chutney, egg omlette and a tea.

After completing the breakfast I knew that ride ahead is going to be a lazy, cozy one because of the hilly, forest roads with cool climate and an over filled stomach. But I was confident that sleep will not be a problem at all because of the excitement within me. The excitement was due to that i was seeing the hilly, twisty forest roads for the first time other than in pictures and i was all alone.

Reached palaruvi waterfalls and decided to make a visit. 10 rs for permit and 5 rs for bike. It was about a 4 km ascent of rough patch road. On the midway, there was a check post where the permit tickets were stamped and vehicle number was noted down. I was given a cover of tiffin box from ticket counter down, to give at this office above to a security officer- Biju. He was a kind person and was friendly. He heard me with interest and an excited face when I shared my travel plan with him. He helped me take photos of mine and also helped me to feed a lonely pregnant monkey. I opened one of the food packets and gave it to it in small amounts. Saying about monkeys, they won’t allow you to touch them but will come to anywhere from which you call if you have food in your hand and also if they get a chance they will grab away anything from you-food, camera, keys etc. Also don’t ever try to scare them away like we do to stray dogs or cats, they may attack you. So be careful with monkeys.
