We reached Shimla by 9 am and it took 3hrs 30mins to reach Shimla. I worked in a multinational as an engineer for 2 years in Shimla itself, so it was easy for me to reach Shimla in a short time with a pillion on a 125cc Disco. The roads were good but something was wrong with bike shockers, it leaked at only 150 kms of our journey to the deserts of Himalays. We crossed Shimla and asked some local mechanics about the seal but they were unable to help.
“Chalti ka Naam Gaadi” and we moved on.
Had our brunch at Rampur, Himachal Pradesh and I told My friend Rohan to get ready for the roads. I was known to that road also because I had driven my car with family to Sangla Chitkul year back on my Car and we were mentally prepared for the cement dust muddy roads till Wangtoo Power Project and some bad road stretch till kalpa due to road widening and Rock blasting. Now the roads were torturing us and my bike’s shock absorbers and the shockers already pissed off :P
We reached Kalpa by 7pm and started finding hotel. We got one and during our dinner we were chatting with a Bolero camper driver about roads to kaza and he stated roads are very good and four wheelers take only 4 to 5 hours to reach Kaza. At that time in kalpa the temperature was near to freezing point and it was freezing, The manager asked us top up two tubs inside the bathroom as water in pipeline might get frozen and we were supposed to leave the hotel early otherwise we have to wait for water till 10, 11 am.
Day 2. As we decided we started early and the roads we found were amazing broad and now its time to take out the camera and start clicking. But soon our happiness was going to end as the pathetic roads were going to begin, and Rohan told me wondering “iska matlab wo camper wala 30 km ke age gaya hi nahi”. It took around 6 hours to reach Nako and near nako the roads were good enough.
We had our lunch near the helipad dhaba and met an ITBP jawan from Chandigarh itself. Asked him about the roads ahead and he told not good enough and it will take 4 or more than 4 hours to reach Kaza. Then Rohan again asked him “is there any shortcut to kaza”???? and the jawan replied smiling “NO” and then we started some good desi language to honor that Camper driver. And thanked God that we did not fell lazy and changed our plan to start late or something. We enjoyed some walking on partially frozen Nako lake, spent some time there and started for our remaining journey to our trip destination Kaza.
Now something was missing but we were busy in admiring nature that I couldn’t figure it out and then suddenly Rohan said we have crossed almost 50 kms and we have not seen any person “Na banda na bande ki jaat” where are we going?
From almost 10 kms before Kaza the lights of Kaza city can be seen but my SLR was not with me that time so could not able to capture that. It was getting colder and we reached Kaza. Now the real hard time begins. We asked some hotels which were closed due to off season remaining were full with foreigners. The 3rd hotel was also full. Now the last hotel we were trying and the doors were closed but the hotel was not. We knocked the door, Knocked up hard. Tried to knock harder and yes the room was available. During the chit chat session with hotel manager he told us that because of the tourist booking from Gujrat, we are available for the last day then we will leave this place till March because no one visit here in winters and from 1st November the roads are officially being closed from Manali side and told us the weather is good and you can go through Manali side roads are open. We asked the temperature and he said at day time its 10 to 15 and nights are freezing at -8, stated that yesterday it was -8. Rohan asked me about what’s your leg is feeling and I replied noting, it’s absolutely fine.Atul Ghosh

After awesome Pahari cooked dinner we were trying to sleep but we were now suffering from 1st stage of Height Sickness. Low oxygen and we were feeling like it was not as cold as -8 and opened the window of the Hotel room. Ahhh sigh of relief it was. Now we were able to breathe Again tried to sleep and managed to sleep for 5 hours uncomfortably because of low oxygen level, Height and low temperature.
"Kahani Main Twist"stYes we were doing Kaza to Chandigarh without night halt :P
It happens when to like minded people are on tour and we had a great night out. Most of us wonder but Riding in hilly areas at night is much safer than day time.
I am sure experienced rider will understand what I am trying to say about night riding in hills.
In the end of the journey I found that my leg was fine enough and I am ready to ride hard as I used to ride before my accident..
Many more kilometers to cover, more pics are waiting to get clicked; more words are waiting to be written.Atul Ghosh
