Default Just Looking Out to Chill – Our Ride to The Nilagiri Hills !

The month of March was in. Winter had just bid goodbye and summer had marched in like an unwelcome visitor. Gone were the pleasantly chilly nights and misty cool mornings. Summer brings along with it a bag of unpleasant ‘perks’- power cuts, water shortage, mosquitoes and stomach infections, just to name a few. Though Bangalore has a mild summer compared to most of the rest of India, we Bangaloreans are known to be perpetual ‘complainers’.

It was time to take a small break somewhere cool even if only for a short stay. Get a little taste of a winter gone by maybe (??) O.K let me cut the b#*#*#*t – needed an excuse to Ride!!

Our niece lives at Wellington near Ooty. Her husband is an officer with the Defence Services. A visit was long overdue and that was reason enough to jump on to our steed and ride off.

    The Onward Route : Bangalore/Kanakpura/Malavalli/Bannur/Mysore/Nanjangud/Gundalpet/Bandipur/Mudumalai/Gudalur/Ooty

I’ve been riding and driving on the Bangalore/Mysore road since I was a teenager (seems like a million years ago) and the road was then just a two lane concrete road. Have done that stretch so many times that I could almost do it in my sleep! Decided to try another route to have a change of scene.

Early morning take offs are mandatory with us and we try to get out of the city ASAP. The ongoing Metrorail work delays us somewhat but we are out of the city soon enough.

NH 209 is a lovely road. Though just two lane it meanders through villages and flanked on both sides by sugarcane and paddy fields. The route is longer by about 20k.m up to Mysore but traffic was practically nil and after the weekend rush SH 17, this was totally relaxing.

The Forests and The Hills, coming up...
    To be contd...

    Cheers Guys

    waiting for the greeneries sirjii.
and the question remains why do i race?
every finishing line is the begining of a new race.

#i have learnt to manipulate my own adrenaline and the perception of biking is different.
    #overkill is underrated.
#how random roads may appear there is always a destination.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
#i don't subscribe to co-incidence,either it is the rider or the other moron on the road

(:)people keeps on saying add spark to life, bajaj got hold of that idea and added an extra spark to bike.

Ridermax- I have been waiting to see your ooty ride. Very smart decision to take Kanakpura Road instead of the crazy mysore road.

    I am tuned in

Default Into The Forest and The Hills

After Malavalli we turn on to SH 33 up to Mysore (patchy in places but o.k.). Soon we are out of Mysore and pass Nanjangud and Gundalpet and enter the Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

Those of us who have ridden through this stretch during a greener season will be saddened by the bare and almost ghostly looking trees. The scene is almost surreal and I guess the recent tragic fire made matters worse. But we know the rains will come soon and the wonderful green will be back in all its glory.

    THE PAST

    ...AND THE PRESENT !!

After a short tea break at Theppekadu, we start to ascend and soon begin to feel cooler with each hairpin climb. After a while we stop to admire the tall stately trees reaching up to the sky. The sight of these trees makes almost everyone stop and we can never really tire of admiring them.

Soon we can see the majestic Nilagiri hills rising up ahead invitingly. We pass through Ooty town quickly and on to Coonoor road and into Wellington to a warm welcome and hot lunch at our niece’s place.

I guess after the sweltering heat of the city, it’s now a time to ‘Chill’

The Return Ride & The Twisties Coming Up......
