    Monsoon in Meghalaya

Hello XBHPians, after a long time I am here...
I could not go out for a road trip for a long time due to some personal problems. So, this time I was thinking about a really good road trip. Kolkata to MEGHALAYA ride and that too in monsoon season. My plan was to explore the India’s highest rainfall places in monsoon.

My scooter, my reliable trip partner.

The scenic beauty of Meghalaya in the monsoon season is just unbelievable. As the name suggests, the Megh (Clouds) are playing each and every corner of the state, and all the waterfalls are so mesmerizing in this season, I just can’t express with my words.

The clouds and shadows on the Hills, a lovely combination to heal all your stress.

When I was checking the google, it shown me almost 3,000km to cover the places and back from my location. So, I have done a full service to my TVS Ntorq properly, installed a pair of fog lights for better visibility and purchased one good quality raincoat additionally.

Never miss a golden sunset when you are in hills.

I started from Kolkata at 3:02am and reach to Jalpaiguri town after riding 672km on 1st day. On the 2nd day, started from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, crossed the entire Assam state and reached Jorabat in Meghalaya in the evening. We could proceed further but we wanted to enjoy the good mountain view in the next morning.

From the morning of day 3, we started exploring the beautiful Meghalaya. 1st we reach the beautiful Umiam Lake. The blue sky and clouds upon the lake was very pleasing.

After having lunch on a road side dhaba, we reached to Laitlum Canyon. The green canyon looks awesome and the valley was so mesmerizing in the golden hour, we could not leave the place easily.

On 4th day, we visited the Nongjorong valley. The view from the valley is just awesome. It would melt all your off-roading struggles to reach the place. The place is quite remote, so it’s better to visit the place in daylight.

Then we visit the famous Double Decor Living Root Bridge. It was totally different experience what we expected. We had to cover 3,500 downstairs to reach the place. It was a kind of trekking experience for us. Actually, there are two Living Root Bridges, one is Single Décor and next one is Double Décor. Also, one beautiful waterfall was there. After visiting all these, we had to cover those 3,500 upstairs.
It’s better to prepare for this place. Its not easy to cover all 7,000 stairs at a time, though there are provisions to stay at night near the Living Root Bridges. But in that case, you need to carry all your luggage. Guide and porter are also available.
I recommend to put a day for this one, start in the early morning. Explore the place with ease and return in the afternoon. The parking area is safe enough, our luggage were mounted on the bikes and no one even touch those.

After that we got a good stay near Sohra, it was very pleasant and budget friendly stay.

On the 5th day, we 1st visited Seven Sisters Falls and Mawamai Cave. The falls looks very nice, but I could not complete the cave journey, as I was feeling suffocated in the cave, so returned back from there.

When we were riding near Sohra, we experienced a lot of clouds crossing the hills, and those came down to the roads also. Visibility dropped to 8 to 10ft. When we were riding through those clouds, our jackets got wet and dense fog occurred on our helmet visor. In that situation, the yellow fog lights helped us a lot to increase the visibility.

The dangerously beautiful Nohkilikai Falls, many local stories are related to this.

After spending a good amount of time at Nohkilikai Falls, we went to the Wei Sawdong Falls. It is another beautiful waterfall of Meghalaya. We need to use wooden stairs to reach this waterfall. It is a different experience altogether. But the view of this waterfall is awesome.

On day 6, we started our journey from Sohra towards Dawki. It was a very hot and humid day. After reaching Dawki, we were filling so tired, so we book one hotel to take some rest. After some time, we went to visit the India-Bangladesh Maitry Border and came back.

At the afternoon, we went out to explore the famous Dawki river and lake. We hired one boat from the counter, only five persons are allowed per boat. The beauty of the place is mesmerizing. It was unbelievable to experience such clean and clear water even in monsoon season. Boating at Dawki was one of the best moments in this trip.

The Phe Phe Falls is one of the best-looking falls in Meghalaya. Also, the waterbody guided by the green hills look absolutely beautiful.

It was our last destination in Meghalaya. From there we started our return journey. At the evening we reach Guwahati, in Assam. We decided to visit the very famous Maa KAMAKHYA Temple near Guwahati and book one hotel near the temple.
On the next morning, we went to visit Maa KAMAKHYA temple, it is one of the Shakti Pith for Hindus.
