After quite sometime, I get a call from Arun. One of the members from our ex-group that we used to ride along with. As he speaks, he says, he has planned a ride to a remote forest that very few have explored about 300 odd kilometers from Hyderabad. He offers me to join along. I quickly said 'yes, of course'. Exploring new places has always been exciting for me. The place is called Jannapuram, Kawal forest range. It is a part of Adilabad forest situated on route to Manchiriyal from Hyderabad through Nagpur highway.

    Riders and Rides:

    I (Raghu): Fazer 150
    Arun: Electra 350
    Arvind: Thunderbird 350
    Kumlesh: Avenger 220

We scheduled to meet at 5 am the next day (Saturday). Everyone arrives, four members inclusive of me (Arun, Arvind, Kumlesh and I). Kumlesh is the least experienced rider and rest of us did a decent number to motorcycle tours. All were geared up except for Kumlesh. He being a naive to touring, carried only a pullover and a merely helmet, I was concerned about his safety.

All in all, fueled up to the brim of our vehicle's petrol tank. We start rolling and shortly, the rain starts pouring, just for a while though. The Hyderabad to Nagpur highway is as smooth as hot knife on butter. We just had to cruise on those beautifully laid tarmac for the next 180 kms (ballpark distance). Though, I have covered these kind of distances on these kind of roads in 3 hours, it took almost 5 hours since we were in a group and Kumlesh doing his first one. We wanted to spare the time until he gets into the flow. He complained about his helmet flying of his cheeks, which was apparent as the helmet seemed to look merely. Nevertheless, safety first, riding and exploring that new place was important, but in one full piece of course.

There were other travelers on motorcycles, mostly youngsters, probably off for a weekend ride to Kuntala water falls (Adilabad district). We rode our own rides in our own group. But then, one rider with a pillion from some group, did not mind riding into our formation quirky interrupting and intimidating to race him maybe. We were never bothered though, after maybe 50 kms, he pulls along the roadside and departs what I thought could be, is to find his own mates. Soon we had to take a diversion from the highway to another one at Nirmal that would lead us to the forest range. As we crossed a certain number kilometers the road got shorter and the forest got denser. Not knowing what we got ourselves into, turned out to be one of the best experiences that we all had. The teak-wood trees trailed alongside the road, the sunlight shimmering through those turmoil-ed leave playing hide and seek, we soaked in everything, every sight and damped ourselves with the beauty that the forest has to offer.

Since, it was a place that not much tourists visit and not many places marked, the whole forest was well preserved. However, there is a lot of civilization mostly, living in those remote villages relying on cultivation. We were riding at a much slower pace, taking pictures and talking to the locals. As we were talking, we found out about a dam, Kaddam Narayana Reddy Reservoir. We took a detour and continued to explore the dam as we had a lot of daylight at our hand. that place was much more than we expected. The dam has 18 gates and the reservoir was oozing with water stored. It was spectacular. We got off the bikes and walked around the reservoir, locals fishing in the little water at the other side of the dam as the gates were not completely flooded.

Back on the road, we were hungry after all the ride, reached Jannapuram sometime in the noon, we had quick few bites of anything that we found. Then we learnt from the locals in the town that are no accomadations available. In fact there are no lodges anywhere close to the place. We had to find a place to crash for the day, we would not want to head back home. After some wandering, we decided to go further into a village called Kawal. The road that led us to Kawal was a single road still maintained very well, there were hardly any potholes, we were impressed. It was a remote village that ended at a girls hostel, rest of the way would have led us into the forest.

We talked to the warden of the girl's hostel and would not permit us to camp in the premises, quite obvious. Warden informed us that we could talk to the Gram Sarpanch who might arrange a stay, we failed yet again. The Sarpanch gives us a hint that there is a base camp in the forest that the village's range officer may let us stay. We came up with a situation where we had to show a purpose of visit, only then, there could be some hope. So, I managed to find a person called Yaser, an ally of the officers. I explained Yaser that we were visiting the place to research on environment for private purpose. So, Yaser let us speak to the officer. After explaining him that we were there only for research and needed access to the base camp for making notes and understanding the place better, he was convinced enough that we were permitted.

Yaser was instructed by the ranger to take us to the base camp. We started our journey into the forest. The off road began, our minds were boggled as the best roads are no roads for a motorcyclists like us. We continued a little into the forest, maybe 7 kilometers. We were blushed, as the off-road took us through some slush, river beds, lots of ups and downs. Kumblesh's vehicle's front Tyre was jammed due to the sticky mud that clogged the gap between the front hender and the Tyre. we just dragged along as it refused to go any further and camp was just a few meters away.

We reached the base camp where five officers guarded a range of 21 kilometers. We exchanged the pleasantries and told them the same story that we wove. To our surprise they bought the story too. We walked around a bit and they took us to the pond where the wild animals quench their thirst. The water in the pond was little. They had arranged a solar pump to keep the water to some level so that the animals would not die due to thirst during summer. The arrangement was quite simple and impressive. Wild animals like cheetah, wild boar, peacock, chimpanzees and rabbits are the common ones around. We turned back to the camp and got freshen up.

Since the rangers offered to share their camp, we sponsored chicken and some liquor as a favor in return. They were more than happy to accept it. Yaser agreed to buy chicken and liquor for the rangers, going all the way back to the village while we prepared the bonfire and the dishes for the dinner. There was no electricity around and mosquitoes were monsterous. We gathered some sticks to cook the food and get the fire going slapping ourselves all over because. As got the fire going and the idea was to cook the before it was dark. Then I went into a siesta while the rest waited Yaser to return. By the time I woke up and it was dark already. Yaser had returned and the food was being cooked. The party was finally on. I mean, it was the first camping, like a proper one along with the rangers.

We were very excited when we learnt that no other civilian was ever allowed to stay after dark in those part of the forest. As we continued to learn more about the place and sense of sensation blossomed as we spoke through the night. The Barbecue chicken and the local liquor kept flowing until the clock struck 11. The the section officer visits the base camp to inspect. The interesting fact that we learnt that the reserve we were in, was a Tiger's mating zone. These tigers migrate all the way from Tadoba to mate (Unfortunately, this is not the mating season so you guys will not expect any tiger porno as you skim through the picture short after).

As soon as the section officer left, we retired to our camp shed to hit the sack. It poured all night and we woke up many a times abruptly because of the mosquitoes. Early next morning, we headed back to our life stuck in a rut. What we learnt was the life that these rangers live, the basic need is a solar lamp and a mosquito net. So, we came to a pact that we will sponsor them one each in our next ride. Not too much as it would seem but it sure is a luxury for the conditions they live in.

The Pictures will follow as soon as I get the back up of the photos. Sorry for the delay.
