Backdrop
Short intro:My interest in biking started right when I was in my 10th standard where I was like every other kid dreaming of owning a superbike.I acquired my first bike in my 11th std,A Yamaha FZ-16.
I did a lot of rides with my buddies spanning those two years(11th-12th).I found an enthusiastic bunch of people to ride with and we had a lot of memorable experiences.
When my biker buddy Ananth Upadhyaya(owned a Pulsar 150) and me came across Xbhp, our very nature of riding changed. We had an increased sense of road safety awareness and understood the importance of riding gears.Though it was difficult for us to convince our parents to buy riding gears at that time,we never rode our bikes without helmets.
Xbhp showed the way ,riding should be done.It is the single most thing that acted like a conduit for our biking passion to blossom.
I covered a memorable 14k kilometres in those two years of ownership of the bike.Yamaha FZ-16,without doubt is one of the best looking and well rounded nakeds in our country.

I finally bid a sad farewell to the bike, when I entered my engineering.
Though I have done a lot of long rides on my Ninja before, this is the first time ever that I am attempting to write a travelog.

We had just finished our first tests of a new semister and hadn't done a long ride in many months. So we just decided on visiting Pondicherry ,in a short span of time and hence did not have much time to plan out things properly. Our initial plan was to leave Bangalore on a Saturday morning and be back the next night.I did a last minute check of a few Team BHP travelogs and finalised the route.
Route taken
1.Bangalore - Krishnagiri(~90kms)
2-At Krishnagiri,Take a left and head onto Vellore(120kms)
3-Once past Vellore, you will approach a Y juncntion,as you see boards towards Ranipet, take the left fork of this Y junction.
4-Take a U turn below the Arcot bridge and take left onto the road towards Tindivanam.
5-Arcot-Cheyyar-Vandavasi-Tindivanam-Pondicherry
Be sure to take the by pass routes to avoid entering the city
Total kilometres:390
You can also take the other route (right at Krishnagiri) about ~310 kms ,but I was advised against it because the roads were supposed to be very bad.
We planned to leave Bangalore by 11-30 am,after attending two important saturday morning classes(we would have loved to start early morning,as we paid the price for starting midday)
Since our colleges were nearby Ananth and me joined up and rode towards the Hosur. We tanked up at Kanakpura Road Shell Bunk and took the Nice Road towards Hosur. We were in real good spirits with the prospect of catching sunset over the azure beaches of Pondicherry.
We reached our meeting point at 11-20 where Tejasvi(TB-350) would join us.This is where our first glitch of the day started. We had to wait for a good one hour in the hot blazing summer Sun.We were heating up and sweating profusely,as we were fully geared up and gettting dehydrated fast as we waited for him.Our frustration finally got the better of us as we started riding towards Krishnagiri MCD,having messaged Tejasvi to meet up directly at Krishnagiri.
The wind immediately started cooling us and we did a sedate run of 80-100kmph and stopped over at Krishnagiri for lunch.By the time we finished ,Tejasvi also joined us.With a renewed spirits we started riding.Bangalore Krishnagiri road is mostly good, freshly laid tarmac, but you do get some bumpy stretches in between where repair work is still going on.

Once we took the left from Krishnagiri towards Vellore,it was pure mayham!.Beatiful 6 lane stretches beckond us to open throttle.I was effortlessly doing 150+ speeds surging ahead. The parallel twin engine revving to life and emitting a sweet sound.
A lot of cars took offence to bikes smoking them and lot of them tried to catch up in vain, only to dissappear in my RVM.
I had to wait for my fellow bikers at certain intervals for them to catch up.Ananth who's topspeed was locked at 136kmph,would catch up soon but Tejasvi on his Thunderbird was clearly struggling to maintain 100+ speeds on his Thunderbird ,so constant stops was the order of the day.
Bangalore-Vellore-Arcot which is a 130-140km stretch is interspersed by deviations onto a single lane road.Though the tarmac quality is excellent, one must watch out for fence jumping pedestrians and darting bikers and other cyclists ,who often regard bikes as slow moving objects and do not move out as you would expect them to.
I had one incident where one guy ,who was crossing the road cooly with me coming at him at 100+,signalling to me that my light was switched on.

Once we reached Arcot,(past Vellore),we reached Y junction ,where the left lane must be taken and then a U turn onto the opposite lane. There we the took the left towards Tindivanam(A direction board is present). This road is a beautiful and relatively scenic two lane road with some occational corners to have some fun. This road has minimal traffic and is a pleasant drive. We mostly took it nice and easy on this stretch maintaining 80-100,with occational bursts to 120kmph.
We stopped for a butt break and had some cool drinks at Cheyyar. We continued ontowards Vandavasi ,where we encountered our second glitch of the day.
I noticed both Ananth and Tejasvi stopping behind me and Ananth blipping his headlights.Alarmed,I turned back, only to find Tejasvi's Thunderbird tailight bracket had broken and his tailight was down on the ground. This posed a new found problem for us since we had to find a way to carry the relatively heavy headlight, without causing us any fatigue. Since this happend in a village,we quickly became a centre of attraction and a crowd started gathering around us.I quickly signalled Tejasvi to move ahead holding the tailight in his hand.We stopped once again after we crossed the village.
Luckily,Tejasvi had a plastic cover with him, which we used to wrap the tailight and tie it to one of the huge saree Saree guard of the RE .
This didn't turn out to be a perfect solution though as we had to stop over frequently to check if the cover held on properly.
By this time the light was fading fast and we slowed down considerably as ,dusk is always a tricky time to ride.
As we approached Tinidivanam, the tarmac quality degraded rapidly and the traffic increased. We missed the bypass road and entered the city where some kind of a festival celebration was going on.The traffic was extremely chaotic and we were stuck there for a good half an hour.We managed to find our way onto the 6 lane highway connecting Tindivanam to Pondicherry(I guess it was the called the ECR-not sure). It was like freeing us from captive shackles as we escaped the maddening city traffic onto the splendid tarmac, where we let it rip.
The 30km odd stretch was dispatched in no time as we came across the gleaming white monument like structure welcoming us to 'Puducherry'.The watch read 8pm.So much for our desire of witnessing sunset over the beach.

The next task was to get a good hotel room nearing the beach. As we made our way dodging the traffic towards the beach,we enquired a few hotels and quickly found out that most were vacant and we could try our luck with the Hotels closer to the beach road.
We came across a place called King's residency which offered a triple sharing decent room with A/C for 1.8k/night.It also had a basement parking facility. Also we were in no mood to search more as our initial plan of catching the sunset was laid to rest,so we were determined to make most of what was left of the night.
We quickly freshened up.I was relieved to remove my Axo knee guards as I wore it inside my pants, which clearly was not meant to be worn that way.I have no other choice because ,if worn on the pants, they scratch the side fairing of my Ninja.
We then set out walking onto beach road.It was a little less crowded and less littered compared to the last time I was here. The calming sound of waves hitting the jagged rocks, cool sea breeze and the sight of distant ships with their lights shimmering made for a relaxing experience after day of long hard riding.
We then proceed onto the french quarter,in search of nice and relaxed European style establishment for dinner. We came across this rooftop restaurant Madame Shante's located at Rollande street .It had a soothing rooftop ambience.Since we were all vegetarians we ordered the french traditional dish Ratatouille which was served along with some fries and rice.Though I found the Ratatouille to be decent, the fries was tasteless and the quantity provided for the price(Rs 180 per dish) was not at all justified.

It was around 11,we were all looking forward to a good night's sleep, not in the least expecting the 3rd glitch of the day.Since we were not sure about the way to walk back to our hotel,we decided to use Google Navigation. As we walked back, the calm streets adorned with French style buildings on either side made for a unique experience,as if we were in another country.
We followed Google maps for about 2-3kms onto a dark alleyway, where the voice guidance system declared that "You have reached your destination".We were three guys in the middle of the night on a dark alleyway lost in the streets. We saw a bike light approaching us,it was the night beat police vehicle. They initially looked at us with suspicion.I don't blame them at all,as they must have mistaken the exhausted look on our faces for something else

Then we explained our situation to them and asked for the way to the hotel. They pointed us in the right direction and we reached Hotel after another 1km or so of walking and crashed into our beds!
Day 2
Since we had missed the sunset,we made yet another ambitious plan to wake up early at 5 -30(5 and a half hours of sleep) and catch the sunrise.Ananth was the first to get up and quickly woke us up too. Then our lumbering Royal Enfield rider in all his glory entered the bathroom and was in there for a good 45-50mins laying yet again our plan of getting a glimse of the sunrise to rest.
We finally made our way outside the hotel at 7am clad in shorts and comfortable tees.We made our way onto Auro Beach, which was a 8-10km ride from the Hotel. This beach was comparitively well maintained and we entered a beach to have some fun in the water and click some pics.We also noticed that a unusual amount of fishing was take place near the shoreline.
After some fun at the beach,we were back on the road in search of breakfast. We came across a homestay/restaurant kind of place where we stopped over for breakfast. The only thing he had was 'Poory'-a south indian fried version of Wheat rotis. The landowner was kind and made us feel welcome there. He also insisted that we see his rooms and he was determined to make us believe that we had made of wrong choice of staying somewhere else. The rooms did look more spacious and he was offfering it for 1.5k.We immediately regretted not doing proper research regarding lodges.
Once the bill for the breakfast came, all our gratitude for the landowner's effusive kindness fissled away as he had charged Rs 55 per plate,(2 pooris). We could get the same for 20 bucks in our college canteen!

We proceeded further along towards the Indian oil bunk for a petrol top up as the Low fuel warning light on my Ninja made it's ominous presence known since my last night ripping session from Tindivanam to Pondy. It was a relishing experience filling fuel as I saw the petrol rate to 67/litre compared to the 76/litre fuel rate in Bangalore.I almost emptied my purse tanking up.Our next visit on the internary was Auroville.
More information here-http://www.auroville.org/

There were a lot of Foreign tourists riding towards Auroville on their rented bikes. They often had suprised look on their faces as they saw our bikes.
The whole surroundings of Auroville have a aura of calmness around them.Right from tree lined roads to the very place itself. They also have a few Cafes and an art exhibit too.
We were then advised to obtain the free passes for visitng the Matri Mandir viewing point. We learnt that prior permission was needed to visit the inside of the Matri mandir and tourists were restricted to just watch it from a distance i.e the viewing point. One very commendable facility in Auroville is that they provide free drinking water all across the place.Since it is mandatory that you must atleast walk 2-3 kms to the viewing point,we had worked up quite a thirst. It was a hot day and we consumed what seemed to be gallons of water !

Feeling rejuvinated we rode back to our rooms to quicly prepare for the Ride back.
Having worked up quite a appetite for lunch we came across a small Udupi restaurant, quite nearby to our hotel. We devoured huge quantities of Rice coupled with sambhar, rasam ,curds and pickle -A typical south Indian carbohydrate boost and we were all ready to RIDE!
We quicky freshend up and checked out of the hotel by 2 pm.It was mostly sedate riding as we took the same way back.As we neared Tindivanam,we were stopped by some cops doing routine check up of iliicit and out of state liquor. After a customary check of the bags and we assuring them that we were not "racing",we were back on the way.
Somewhere along the route from Tindivanam to Arcot we deviated from our previous route and we reached Vellore directly. This route had more traffic and poorer tarmac quality. We also had to pass through all the cities in between.
We joined the Vellore Krishnagiri expressway and maintained 120+ speeds,as we were eager to reach home a little early so that we could catch some good night's sleep before college the next day.
The Krishnagir-Bangalore stretch had considerable amount of traffic, mostly by people returning from their Sunday outings.Increased traffic also meant that there were more cars who wanted to prove that they were faster, some even recklessy tailing and flashing lights at us.I can atleast think of 8-10 cars who wanted to overtake us on that stretch!
We were also amused by one Indica, who stopped beside us as we were taking a Buttbreak and asked us if we were "racing".They also proceed to have a photoshoot around our bikes.
We reached back home by 8 30pm.Our first experience riding towards a Non hill station destination.
To top off the day with a drowsy and hazy moment on the bed ,with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment to fall of into a deep sleep.Only to wake up the next day with an overwhelming urge to be back on the saddle once again!
