  • Solo Ride- Bangalore- Murudeshwar and back

There were people talking about the long weekend of the Independence day. There were people travelling to nearby tourist spots, people lazing at home, people catching up on movies.. I wanted to do just one thing- Get on my bike and head out! So I decided to travel to my hometown (well, almost), Murudeshwar, Karnataka. Here's the route

This route involves straight streches, twisties, muddy roads and bad roads as well. I knew this route since I had done this last year along with my wife. This year, I planned to do it solo. The route was: Bangalore-Tumkur-Gubbi-Arsikere-Bhadravati-Shimoga-Sagar-Gerasoppa-Honnavara-Murudeshwara. Totally 483km from my house.

Here's the log. It contains less (and medium quality) pics since i was riding alone and was completely in love with the roads. So, less stops, less pics.

Day1: Left home early at 5:30 A.M. Had packed up everything in my Wildcraft Alpinist bag and tied it (with bungee chords) to my home made carrier on to the bike. Hit the expressway, NICE road and reached tumkur pretty early, around 6:15 A.M. I had raingear handy as this region experiences pretty heavy rainfall this time of the year. Crossed Gubbi to click the first pic of the day of my beauty.

I had very few breaks as I was very eager to hit the twisties of the Gerasoppa Ghat section. In no time, I reached Tarikere and stopped for a much needed break- breakfast and some extra nutrition. Also, refuelled my bike here. I did not catch even a drop of rainfall till I reached Shimoga. I had to stop and put on my rain gear. The road till Shimoga is more or less good. Except for the little Arsikere-Tarikere strech, everything is pretty manageable.

As I paused there for a short while, I saw a couple on another Karizma, completely geared heading towards the same direction as me. It really feels great to see similarly "dressed" people on the highway. The villagers and people in towns look at you like you've landed from Pluto, with all the riding gear on. Anyway, within no time, I was back on my bike- headed towards my destination.

Although my destination was Murudeshwar, all my eyes were on two major roads. One is Shimoga-Sagar road- mostly straight with some high speed, really long twisties. The second one is (yeaaaaahhhhh baby!!!) the gerasoppa ghat. By the way, this ghat houses the world famous Jog Falls. I just did not feel like stopping ANYWHERE on the former road. I just held the accelerator so that the bike's speedo was reading anywhere between 80 and 100. I experienced less rainfall till here, maybe some showers here and there. And then came my favourite part of the ride:

I was doing about 40-50 on the ghats except for the sections where I found loose gravel and slush. The MRF meteor tyre is great for these conditions I would say. I had fun cornering the bike and leaving all the cars behind on the ghats. There were some villages on the way and some places bridges to cross various tributaries of the river Sharawati.

I then reached Honnavara at around 2:30 and decided it was time to stop for lunch. It is really great to have Konkani food at hotels and speak to everyone in Konkani (my mother-tongue) as it is not widely spoken elsewhere. The road from Honnavara to Murudeshwara is newly laid and was surprised to see the absence of potholes (as I had seen last year). Finally I could check-in at th hotel (RNS Highway) at 3:45 P.M. It was raining like crazy there. Murudeshwar is the land of pristine beaches and coastal cuisine. I would stay here for the next three days and eat my heart out. Also, gotta visit a few relatives

Day 2: Got up early morning and visited my hometown Bailur, next to Murudeshwara. Lazed around the entire day and did not do any riding other than to Honnavara to pick some stuff.

^ The main road at my Village.
While returning I began to observe the chain scratching the chain guard. So had to run to the hero service center (luckily, opposite to the hotel where I was staying) to get it rectified.

Day 3: Got up again, early morning to visit the famous Murudeshwara Temple. It was raining that day as well.

It was raining like crazy but I didn't want to waste the day, so I set out to Gokarna, again to meet few more relatives. The route from Murudeshwara to Gokarna is good. Some good twisties and mostly straight roads. I was riding safely not to cross 60kmph since the roads were really, really wet. And to add to the fun, it was slushy too.
Finally landed at OM beach almost during lunch time.

You need to take a deviation from the town to reach the OM beach and the roads are very bad in that strech. The tar is almost gone and there are twisties filled with gravel. Had lunch at my relatives place and had a walk around the village- silence, silence everywhere. It was a nice change.

After lunch, I was geared up again and ready to leave to Murudeshwar. People in the village were really freaked out when they came to know I rode all the way from Bangalore. While riding back to Murudeshwar, saw two riders on P200NS fully geared up. It was a relief, since otherwise people look at fully geared riders like they are from Pluto. After I reached hotel, I lubricated the chain and prepared for the next day's ride back to Bangalore.

Day4: It was 5:00 AM when I woke up and it was raining like crazy, nothing new to me specially from the last 3 days' experience. However, as I settled the hotel bill and hooked up the bag on to the carrier, I noticed that the Bike had drenched completely and was ready for "wrestlemania" to start the bike.

I wasn't disappointed, the bike didn't start for 15 minutes. At last she started (whew)!!! Here are some more pics:

^wet, wet bike @ gerasoppa ghat.
I was excited to get back to the twisties at Gerasoppa Ghat. At a point when I saw the "Ghat Section Ends" board, I took a U turn and did some nice corners again.
Rest of the ride back home was same, I was cruising all along at around 80kmph and finally reached home at around 5. The stopwatch showed me a reading of 10H and 21 Min.

Yeah wanted to, but wasn't confident of finding the way. I usually love getting lost, but I had to report to work the next day.. So.... I want to explore Charmudi/Agumbe on my next ride towards Murudeshwar.

Thanks man! Last year the roads were pathetic, I was there too. You just cannot imagine the "depth" of some potholes.
This year I found the roads better than they were last year. But, I don't expect it to last long. It has already started to wither away.
So, never know- next year the roads might be same as last year.

Shimoga ghats are full of "not so bad" roads. Some corners are fun and some are full of slush/gravel. Which bike do you ride? If you are riding Zma/Pulsar/any light bike, you can easily pull it out of the corner and get it straight enough to brake (if you know what I mean).

                        Cheers,
