Lovely name for a thread.....but what has become of it....

          Waiting for more details!

PS: Whats the total travel time to Hampi and back from Hyderabad?

RaviKiran and me had a discussion that this could be a possible location for a KA - AP Interstate Meet! Its roughly the same distance for both cities.

Hampi is abt 400kms from HYD. 6-7hrs ride. Hampi might be a common place for all but i dont think its a good place for us bikers to meet up. Read lot of signs saying vehicles momvent are restricted. Its better we dont have a interstate G2G there.

                      Some more pics.

Visited the temple on sunday morning. We found this intresting thing in the temple.

The shadow of the kopuram falls upside down in a small room. Saw through the opening where the light comes and i was able to see the entire koopuram. We were stunned and just could'nt make out how it was possible!

@kriss....remember the chick in the middle? She was the herione in the stone act

The monolithic bull. probably this was the only place where we did'nt spot forigen tourist.

From what we heard from the Guide. This was the one of the biggest market of those time here they used to trade glod, diamonds, ruby's and wat not. If one stand from where the monolithic bull is and see with a binocular, they'll be able to see the god inside the temple

This is what is left of once a very big palace/fort. Mind you......over 60% of this is recreated by the britishers for the future generation to have an idea of what was here

This was an wonderful site. This was some kind of a water tank/pool.

The Vithala Temple. If u miss this temple in hampi then pls commit sucide by jumpin into a glass of water. This temple is just mind blowing/ amazing. Everything in this temple has lot of detail in it. there was one small craving in one of the temple walls. If one manages to block/alter his view of it then one can see 6-10 different statues in a single pc..... This is just one of the examples of this temple.

If you plan to visit hampi then set aside 3days for it. take a guide. Hardly costs you 400bucks. The stories and the facts behind hampi he tells you just amazes you.

                              Day 1 Log

                              Trip Log :: Day 1

Here's the log guys... sorry for the delay as I had to cope with irregular power supply at my place... Even the photos had got delayed as my card reader went kaput Also, due to lack of time I did not embed the photos... Please follow the link below for photos and those linked by Kriss:
Picasa Web Albums - Krishna Prasad Reddy - Hampi Trip

It all started with a phone call from Chaitanya (Kriss) when he told me that he wants to ride out this weekend. Ravi Kiran (caRaviKiran) was taken into a conference we decided we are riding out but the destination was not locked in. We had three options –

                              1)Mahanandi via SriSailam (~400 KMs)
                              2)Hampi via Raichur (~400 KMs)
3)Kolleru Lake near Eluru (~400 KMs)

We zeroed in on Hampi. Few more people have confirmed joining the trip – my brother, Satish (onlinesatish) and Kiran (Kiran_Borra). Kiran had to drop out of the trip as he’s got a last minute week-end activity at the office.

At 5:15 AM on Saturday, 17 Jan 2008, all the five riders met at the meeting point in Mehidipatnam and headed off for Hampi.

                              • Chaitanya – Pulsar 200 (Black)
                              • Ravi Kiran – Pulsar 220 (Blue)
                              • Krishna – YZF R15 (Blue)
                              • Satish – Apache RTR (Black)
                              • Vishnu – Apache RTR Refresh (Titanium Grey)

There was some fog but nothing close to what we encountered during our trip to the Western Ghats a few weeks back. The road was clearly visible and we were doing decent speeds. Just when the sunlight started, we stopped for a break as those 15 odd minutes would be very dangerous – neither we’d have enough sun light nor our headlights would show our way clearly! We started off once we confirmed that everyone was comfortable. Our next stop should be Jadcherla where we have to take a turn for Mehaboobnagar from NH 7.

In a few minutes I saw something that I just didn’t want to miss and stopped. Chaitanya stopped along and we both took some snaps. Once we started, we found a rather good sunrise but didn’t stop for a shoot. By the time we reached Jadcherla all the three were waiting for us. It was 7:00 AM then with trip meter reading 105 KM. That junction was busy with many Lorries plying and we decided to stop for breakfast after 8:00 AM. We started off to meet again in Mehaboobnagar (15 KMS from Jadcherla), came through the town together and by this time it was well past 8:30 AM.

Ravi, CHaitanya and Satish started pushing in excess of 110 KMPH. CHaitanya wanted to check pressure in his front tyre but couldn’t get a place to do so. Their next stop was at past 9:00 AM at a puncture shop – to fill air. Vishnu & I were behind them by a few minutes as Vishnu didn’t take his RTR on the highway yet and is still getting used to handling. He was breaking at every corner and was trying to overtake in 5th gear itself and that was slowing him down heavily. I just followed him as if I leave he’ll be nowhere to be found. Well, the roads were good and traffic was pretty less. It was not very hot either. That helped us clock a good distance.
When we stopped at the puncture shop a white Innova stopped beside us, two guys got down and started speaking to us. They asked for the guy on first bike and that was Ravi Kiran… It seems, he was doing 130+ KMPH in the Innova and Ravi Kiran was following him right behind. He was stunned and slowed down to give way. They were traveling from Hyderabad to Goa.

We stopped for our breakfast in the next town. Had Idly’s and Upma, decided that we’d stop at the border and set out. Since I started with half tank, I had to refill petrol there. Now, we had information that the road is not that good near to the border… we started thinking when will the border come… but we had to wait for a while! Noticed some cooling towers far away and I know they are thermal power plant cooling towers… Raichur was another 20+ KMS still so I can guess the border is near now. A few distant snaps and realized that we entered Karnataka. Bad roads probably laster 5 KMS or less, in AP before the border and Ravi Kiran & I were thinking if this bad roads, then what is that we faced in our previous trip!!!

A few KM’s later we were in front of the power station and I suppressed the urge to shoot the cooling towers (security reasons) and proceeded further. Ravi Kiran, however, stopped & snapped it. We came out of Raichur and took the turn for Hampi road via Sindhnur & Gangawati. This road was a delight. Almost straight, pretty good, marked, most turns with reflectors and some kind of barricades, very less human habitation, so we were doing 100 KMPH something. Stopped only once before Gangawati

By this time looks like my brother has got a glimpse of how an RTR can handle (he followed Satish for some time) and he was keeping the line… we were doing like 100-105 KMPH and at one point I realized that I lost all of the guys. Now the catch up act… I had to push my bike over 120 KMPH for a good distance to sight them and they were all doing 110+ continuously!!! Well, that was only Vishnu & Satish… the Pulsars were doing more speeds. They stopped for a break, saw us coming and were honking. Apparently Satish saw them and I slowed down as I knew that horn… Vishnu went off and we couldn’t stop him. We took a break. When Vishnu called we told him to take a break and wait for us.

All this while there were many meals packets on the road and since we saw many vehicles with flags we thought there’s some political party meeting in this area. But , to our surprise, after we crossed Sindhnur, we were stuck in a big traffic jam. Chaitanya was far ahead, Ravi & Satish stopped as soon as we started as Satish’s rear brake rod spring gave way… they were behind us. Just when we started maneuvering through the long queue of busses Chaitanya called me to inform that he crossed the traffic jam and people were sitting on roads as if there was a “rasta roko” going on. But things started moving by the time we came there and we hardly had to stop thrice and could make our way through. I told Chaitanya to wait at Gangawati found him at the first petrol pump in Gangawati. Ravi Kiran & Satish arrived soon.

Someone spotted green dots on my bike’s engine & lower fairing. I know instantly that it is the coolant. I looked for the coolant container and found no leak from it and that it is empty. Upon observation I understood it leaked from the radiator. I have no options here… just went ahead to Hampi and wanted to check this at the destination which was 20-30 KMs away.

Now the discussion was whether to take the boat route or the road route. It was not about the distance but the novelty factor. We took the boat route and spent almost an hour there waiting for boats and transporting the bikes across. Once crossed, I got the camera hanging on my neck and started shooting just about anything I found to be good. But then there were so many of them!!! Hampi was about 8 KM from this point and we finally reached our destination with the trip meter reading 485 KMs . Another discussion started now – eat first or hotel first. It was about 2:00 PM and we were hungry. We found our way to Mango Tree Restaurant and had a very nice meal there. The ambience was great, river front (hardly any water but still!) and under a huge mango tree we sit in a hut. Our tiredness added to this and we didn’t feel like moving at all!

Hampi is very commercialized due to a high in flow of foreign tourists. The moment I entered the place I started feeling bad that it doesn’t feel like a pleasant place. Money took over the place and brokers haunt you at every road & corner! After a few trials we found a place with five beds in one room and decent enough parking space for Rs 1200. Errr, that was a good deal going by the rates we heard there. It was 5:00 PM by the time we checked in and we were told that the sun set is very good from Hemakuta temple complex and we need to climb up the hill on stairs for 15 minutes.

We decided to do that one thing at least, freshen up and went out with Chaitanya fast asleep. Had a very good time up the hill, snapped a lot of photos, got irritated when the guard said not to use the tripod, failed to get some good sunset shots but enjoyed the time and came out only when the guard said “time up”. Once on the main street, we had some masala soda and then headed for ice cream. It was 7:00 PM, our legs aching and almost everyone tiered… phone signals not working so we left the thought of calling in Chaitanya and had some huge bowls of ice cream with cookie power & chocolate sauce. Satish & Vishnu said we don’t need any dinner

We went back to the room and woke up Chaitanya. He wanted to make an urgent phone call! It was already 8:30 PM so we left Satish & Vishnu to sleep and left out. After some queue at the STD booth he finally made some calls, we all had dinner and headed back to the room thinking we gotta sleep and wake up early. But the devil inside us kept us discussing about bikes till past 11PM (standing outside the room for over an hour before we knocked the door!) Sound sleep it was…

BTW, some info – The Hemakuta cluster of temples are about 3000 years old and the Virupaksha temple complex is about 2000 years old. Hampi was a Shiva Pilgrimage center on the banks of Tunga Bhadra river and only later that it became the center of the great Vijayanagara Kingdom’s Capital Fort – some 700 years ago. Telugu & Kannada have the same routes and were taking their diversions in due course of time… I would not be wrong if I state that during the rule of Vijayanagara Kingdom, particularly during Sri Krishna Devaraya’s rule, Telugu literature got the most benefit than during any other’s regime. A major chunk of the Telugu speaking state – Andhra Pradesh is known as “Rayala Seema” – after the Vijayanagara Kings. This makes it very important and attractive for me to know the roots of my literatures Golden Age’s glorious past.
