  • [Photo Feature]: A ride to the Scottish Borders.

I had been on vacation to the UK recently in August 2013. I was in Edinburgh, Scotland and from there I went on a one-day motorcycling trip to the Scottish Borders. Frankly this was the first time I have ever done touring on a bike, in fact I have not done touring in India at all So I was pretty excited about this.

I hired a Suzuki V-Strom DL650 which falls under the adventure/tourer category of bikes. I did a bit of research and thought that this class of bike would be ideal for the trip. I initially thought of hiring either a Triumph or a BMW but couldn't get either, so I settled for this.

Well my journey started around 10 AM on 6th August, 2013. It took me a few minutes to get adjusted to the bike and also initially I lost my way

But soon I was back on track and hit the A720 to head towards Rosslyn Chapel which was my first destination.

    Nice teaser there buddy
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Re: A ride to the Scottish Borders.

I reached Rosslyn Chapel in about half hour to 45 minutes. The place is quite close to Edinburgh and I would really recommend this place for anyone visiting Edinburgh. Well Rosslyn Chapel is an interesting place and the reason for me to visit is that it features prominently in 'The Da Vinci Code' by Dan Brown. And the fact that I read the book and was living part of the story excited me

The Chapel has intricate carvings all over the place with each of the carving having its own story. One could spend the whole understanding the place, but I was hard pressed for time and my primary aim was motorbiking.

Here are some clicks of the place.

The structure in the above pic had many intricate carvings. I took close-ups of some of them and created a collage. Can you read what's written on them?

            Continuing from the previous post...

The person who was handling the bike hiring process had 'warned' me about the fantastic views I would experience especially along the A701. And I was not disappointed to say the least

Speed was not there in my mind at all, it was all about enjoying the ride and taking in the scenic views. And to top it the weather was just fantastic. It was mostly plains on either side dotted with grazing sheep.

"Objects in the mirror are more beautiful than they appear."

My next stop was Moffat, a quaint little town on the borders. And then a quick lunch break at the Moffat Mill.

Thank you 'random tourist' for clicking this pic.

So from here I took the A708 and headed towards St. Mary's Loch. The regular dose of scenic views continued but there was a nasty surprise in store along this road. More about it in a while.

One of the perils of riding alone is that there is no one to click a pic of you on the bike but when I was just exiting Moffat I spotted a gentleman busy clicking the landscapes and I requested him to click a pic of me on the bike, and here it is.

Ok now coming to the nasty surprise bit. I was riding along and then I heard a noise. It sounded like a truck approaching, but the road is narrow for a truck to fit in properly. I slowed down a bit and looked both ways but couldn't see anything. The intensity of the sound increased and then I saw three RAF trainer jets whiz past by. I just stopped and didn't even have time to click any pics It's all captured in my memory now.

And it all happened at the below location.

I did wait for a while to try my luck if any more jets would pass by, but that was all the show I had for the day.

And I moved on... After a while I reached St. Mary's Loch. It's quite a big lake and very serene. I stopped for some clicks.

The bikes at the dealership from where I hired the Suzuki.

It was a great ride for the day and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Looking forward to doing something similar in the future and this time looking forward to do a longer ride.
