  • [Photo Feature]: West Coast Ride.... GOA 2013

Hey xBhpian's , My name is Frank and I'm new to xBhp but not old to riding... and I must say you all guys are awesome in every way. Its been more than a month now.
I been reading all the travelogues religiously not a single day passes without reading the experience you guys have shared, and trust me all I get out of it is inspiration to ride more and ride in style. If only someone would have paid me for riding and exploring places, life couldn't get any better and I'm sure that's a dream job of every other person whose a part of xBhp. But I being a part of media I hardly get time to ride. But I guess I'm will be changing that soon.

Well I'm planing on riding to Rajasthan in the month of december 2013. And I'm sure I have all you guys there to guide me. Apart the reason for this post is to share this West Coast Ride to GOA which i had always dreamt of, Being a Mumbaite you can understand how frequently we travel to goa as stress buster, However that's always been through train or bus. But this time I wanted it to be with my bike. So the big ride (For me) planing starts with posting on Facebook asking for if anyone would be interested to join me for the ride. well we do have our riding circle but none ready to ride for Goa. And finally one friend from our group Parichay (a.k.a Parry) agreed. Finally the ride dates were to be decided and since this was our first big ride a lot of excitement was build some did try to demotivate us by giving us every possible reason or I would say scare about the consequences of riding on the dangerous NH17 cause of the heavy traffic of Volvo buses and trucks plying on that route and the overtaking patterns these guys have for them we were like ants. Anyway that didn't make much changes to our plan to ride to goa. since we going to riding for the first time no clue how to go about with ride its only when I read through all the travelogues did I learnt what all things we missed before we left for our first big ride.. and I guess almighty was with us so we didn't get into any trouble. So that's just a introduction to this first big ride, not much to share but in the upcoming log as I will try to recollect the memories of the ride and upload some pics as much I can.

        West Coast Ride.. GOA 2013

Day Before the D-Day - is the most important day as i learnt from this ride as we were all set to ride to goa, been a month since were planning, first big mistake I did gave my karizma for servicing just a day before my ride. as i mentioned since i work for a channel it hardly leaves me time with even seeing my family in for days I spend maximum time shooting, and now when I read through the logs I learnt I need to service my bike atleast a week in advance and have a dry run just to be sure how its going to function during the ride period. And you will be shocked what work I ended up fixing a day before the ride.. I was having my karizma's Camshaft changed.. and expecting to perform on the next day.. Unfortunately been awake the whole day and running behind parts for the karizma wherein I should be resting home and preparing myself mentally for the ride, And I don't know if you guys ever faced issue getting spares for karizma I had to run a marathon to get the camshaft finally found a shop around 5PM asked the mechanic to have it fixed and while fixing it another issue popped up the chain guide was broken ,had to again run to get that arrange got the chain guide arranged and by now it was 8pm and the next day I'm leaving for the ride and I was desperately waiting for my bike to be fixed and around 9pm the mechanic say he cant fix the chain guide and i need to get a new one and by now all the spares shop were closed and i could actually see all the effort I put was goin in drain.... Since we had planned the ride on a tight schedule since i had limited days of leave... couldnt think of wasting even a day all tensed and waiting for some miracle to happen.. And there it was a friend walks up at the garage and seen me tensed and learning about my ride and issue that my bike had which couldn't make it to the ride and could see the desperacy that i had for this ride. he just walked to me and said... Chill bro you can take my bike" he owned a Apache RTR 180..and that was like a surprise for me as i never expected someone would just lend his bike to me for such a long ride, i my self would have never given my bike to anyone for such a long ride.. he was very cool about it and i could see the confidence he had in me. And all i could see in him was a guardian angel who was send by god to fullfill my dreams of riding to GOA.

Finally all set i had his bike checked with the mechanic had an engine oiled change done and it was now almost 11.30pm and we had planned to start at 2.00 am so that we could cover the max distance before sunrise as it was the month of may and you can understand riding in that heat , i could see my self like chicken roasting in the tandoor. but now it was no looking back. all set reached parry's house at 1.45am and that's where our ride begin.. actually after all the chaos i been through hardly anytime to click pics when we started our ride. As per our plan ride our first halt was Mangaon but we were lucky not much of the traffic in the night as one thing i learnt about the NH17 2-3 am is the best time if you want to drive or ride to goa on the NH17 because that's the time when all the volvo's goin towards goa have crossed that patched till khed and by the time you reach khed sun would be up then. However once we took the right from vadhkal naka till little before kolad the roads are under construction so a lot of diversion and with the high beam light of this jeeps and cars that ply between this route it was getting little difficult with judging the diversion however we still managed and guess what in this pitch dark night we didnt realized we had crossed Mangaon and only realized that we had reached poladpur it was around 6.00am.. that's when parry signed me to take a halt . In the process of avoiding the sunburn we were running like a race horse. and with me i was been doing that since last morning as i was running behind getting the parts for my zima.. and when we halted at poladpur only when i realized that my loving mom had packed a mini flask with coffee in the side net. that was must that caffeine that kept me up and alive and we had the coffee and we all back on our mission cover maximum distance before the fire god rise up from his sleep. And there we in the one of the best ghats with lots of the curves and leans my favourite the Kashedi Ghat which is total 18kms ghats divided equally 9kms drive up and 9kms decend its like a every biker who loves leaning their bikes on every corner . However there was no stopping to parry as this was something he always talked about on the NH17 and he was riding a Yamaha R15 v2 now the name yamaha itself defines what it best in... CONTROL... and with the best tyres for the R15 parry was all zip zap zoom and that couldnt stop me though. there i was on the first lean and my understanding about the RTR having a pretty decent tyre turned out to be a misconception first lean and there i was dragged off road... and that was like a seeing the best tarmac laid ahead with the best curves i could get to lean. and it there i lost confidence and however it was decided that parry would wait at the mid of the ghat at the peak this pic from there.. and the first pic we clicked so far....

read the first para.. nice write-up.. but a request, if you could change the text format to simple ones like roman, it would get easier to read.. and the attachment is not visible..

          Ride safe and have fun.

So far throughout this ride so far i hadn't used my DSLR, Probably since this was a first long ride we were mainly concentrating on the roads and so we don't miss on the directions. However parry was doing the needful by clicking pics as and when possible with his cellphone. Well after this halt the downride was awesome however I was still behind parry being a little more alert on the corners after the RTR went off road in the initials. Well the last discussion we had was to wait was after the ghats as we just wanted to get our back rested. well parry seen this small hotel kind off and stopped by which wasn't open but we all he figured out was a bench so we rest for sometime.

we just rested here for 15 minutes as we were racing against the fire god to cover maximum distance before it gets too hot and humid so there we were back on beautiful landscaped road with well finished tarmac. i must say no matter how bad roads we have in the city but government has maintained the NH17 very well and as discussed in our last halt we were going to have our breakfast in sangameshwar, well but as i was riding without any proper sleep fatigue was just increasing my body was just giving and to avoid fall asleep i was riding fast and without noticing that i had crossed sangameshwar only to realized when parry zip past ahead of me and signalled me to stop and that's when i realised that we had reached almost chiplun and now the plan was to halt in chiplun and have our breakfast. Reached chiplun around 9.00 am and had our breakfast and ordered my self a nice hot coffee probably that would keep me awake for sometime. well i never wanted my first ride to be like this but unfortunately it was.. People say when you plan things its doesn't go as it was to.. but never go so unplanned that it get worst than that.. and that's what i learnt but still i was ready to go through it.. well tiredness and fatigue was taking a toll on my body and initially he was in sight but later my speed reduced down to the like 60KMPH and that's where we were separated and now he was way ahead of me. all i was focusing was the black tarmac and reach a place where i could just splash some water over face and have more coffee as the last cup of coffee in the flask was over at khed.

Anyways after a long lost riding i reached lanza i was in the worst state by now, as i parked my bike and tried to get off because of the dizziness i just drifted away from the bike and that's when a guy from the hotel seen me and asked me i need some help that was really nice of him, looking at my backpack and biking gears he asked me was i coming from mumbi and all i asked him back was if i can get a cup of coffee he got me water and unfortunately there was no coffee available all they had was tea. Had a cup of tea still no difference called parry to check and found that he had already reached rajapur and now i had to get going, i asked him to continue and meet me directly at kankavli which was a good 165kms. As i was sitting on my bike something got my attention i seen a jar of chocolate and to my surprise i seen coffee bite in it. well now that what i experiments and guys from my experience always on long ride have some coffee chocolates along and there it worked for me had some 5 coffee bite chocolates at a time and started my ride. Guy you wont believe it worked. i was all alert and this was the time i had to compensate for the time and i had lost before and there was cruising at 110kmph nonstop luckily less traffic. reached rajapur check with parry he didnt answer continued from rajapur and just before kankavli stopped to check and i had parry message about the hotel he was waiting at, its called neelam very famous hotel, we ordered for lunch and our plan was to just have some starters and continue.. we had our lunch and started again i popped some 3-4 coffee bites and all charged it was like spinach which popeye has it actually worked like that.. this time we were riding together and our trail was on till we reached this huge 8 lane highway now since this was the first time and never been on this route before it was like a open highway and trusted we only realized this when we reached panjim that we had already skipped the sawantwadi ghats now I'm still not sure what highway that was... one click from there if anyone can figure out what highway it is...

There we were cruising at 110-120kmph it was like a gateway to heaven (GOA) as we reached a small check post which said welcome to goa and we were ll excited all the fatigue tiredness sleep everything just went off... This was the feeling i was waiting for it just overcomes every other hardship you must have gone through... and there our first click on the land of Sun Sand and Beaches .....

                          Hey Frank,

Fantastic pic's mate. I have been away from xbhp for a while and this is the opening TL that I am reading. Its really great of your friend to give you his bike. No one these does that. Luckily I also have couple of friends who do the same.

Silhouettes were near perfect. Loved them.

Isn't Parry's from tbhp ? I remember seeing his R15 which did 27k kms recently and LS2 there. Convey my regards to him.

Hope you have Jaisalmer in the list or else add it up. You can go and test your bikes top speed. The climate would also be perfect.

                          Cheers

Nice Pics Bro. Feel bad that you didnt go through with you ZMA but nevertheless you complete your trip with much ease. One thing i learn from your trip is that always have coffee bites with you while going for a long Ride. Nice travelog.

Can you just tell me you started at 2:00 AM from where and reach Goa at what time.
