  • [Photo Feature]: Weekend Ride to Horsley Hills

After my ride to Pondy I was thinking about where to go next and I was checking the offline meets thread on the forums. Then I came to know that @Ananth had planned a 2 day weekend trip to Horsley Hills. Initially I wasn't sure whether I could keep up with them as I am still a newbie to touring and thought I might have to skip it. But then I thought that if I join them I would be getting some experience about group riding, touring and that it would be quite fun too. So I sent another message to Ananth that I was in for the ride.

This was the route we were supposed to take for the ride
Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps.

The plan was quite simple, we were to start off from Chennai Trade Centre by 5:30 a.m. , stop near Kanchipuram for tea, breakfast at Chitoor and get to Horsley Hills for Check in and lunch.

I started off from my home by around 5:00 and waited for the others at the meeting point. Then @SriramEfunds, Aravinth arrived at the meeting spot. Sriram said he had some trouble with his bike and so he would be tailing. As this was my first group ride, he gave basic instructions for the ride. We were waiting for @jkhan69 whom arrived shortly. We geared ourselves up and readied our bikes.

We four started off by around 6 and were heading towards Kanchipuram. Kartik and Ananth joined us on the way near Sriperambudur. The fun part was a guy on swift who was following us from Poonamalle. When we asked him, he said he was also a rider . It was a very relaxed ride, we weren't pushing ourselves, maintaining a steady 80-90 kph speed. We stopped near Kanchipuram for a tea break and then continued on.

Re: Weekend Ride to Horsley Hills

As we were proceeding towards Chittoor, just few kilometres before entering Andhra, Sriram had some trouble with his bike, so we decided to wait till he got it fixed. Once he got it fixed, we continued towards Chittoor and as we were riding, suddenly all the lush green landscape on either sides of the road turned to reddish brown, by then we knew we had entered Andhra Had a nice breakfast near Chittoor and continued on towards Madanapalle.

On the way we also stopped by a Ghat section, and some other places to take snaps. We found a place that looked like a quarry of some sorts and decided to do some offroading. I struggled because it was my first time offroading, but thanks to the tips provided by the experienced fellows, I managed to take the r15 offroad and up the rocks Took a few snaps, did some exploring and resumed riding.

From thereon we rode till Madanapalle, filled up our bikes there and continued the journey towards Horsley Hills.

Re: Weekend Ride to Horsley Hills

By midday we reached the bottom of Horsley Hills, from there it was just a 15 minute ride up the hills. The hills themselves are not very high, but it was quite cold in the evening and night for its height. The short road up the hills was quite beautiful.

We checked in at the AP Tourism resort at the top of the hills, got refreshed and had a salty lunch at the restaurant. The evening that day, we started to explore in and around the hills. Checked out the sunset point which was very nice, but we were a bit early though. There was also a small pond with a beautiful trail on the side. We decided to take our bikes through, I couldn't take mine though because of the low gc of the r15.

We had to make some arrangements to get the fz and duke up the trail as there was no path up the trail. The fz got stuck when we tried to get it up But we lifted the rear and managed to get it up the trail. The duke climbed it with relative ease though. Did a bit of offroading and returned back to the rooms by evening. @sriram0111 joined us in the night and we had dinner(which was also salty) at the same restaurant.

Some of the guys went for a short ride down the hills in the night, the rest dozed off to end day 1.

Re: Weekend Ride to Horsley Hills

On day 2, had a nice breakfast that was surprisingly good and then revisited some of the places in the morning, this time I managed to get the R15 to the other side of the pond by an alternate route Wandered around taking pictures and offroading. Once we were done, returned back by around noon to check out and started the return journey. We decided to take a different route for the return journey as a cab driver told us that new roads were laid in another route.

We were to go through Madanapalle->Palamaner->Gudiyattam->Vellore->Chennai(through NH 46 IIRC). My god the roads from Madanapalle-Gudiyattam were incredible, thanks to the cab driver who informed us of the road conditions. Riding that stretch through the Bandipur reserve area was fanatastic. We had to take a short break enroute Palamaner as Sriram went back to fill up his RE at Madanapalle. There was also an incident when @sriram0111 crashed his RE into @SriramEfunds Karizma, but there wasn't any serious damage though and no one was hurt.

I also had some trouble taking some of the hairpins and went off the line atleast thrice as far as I can remember, but still it was fun to ride through those roads. I need to get better at cornering We were searching for a hotel to have lunch near near Gudiyattam, but we managed to find one with food only near Pallikonda. We also saw another biker who stopped at the same hotel for lunch. He belonged to roadrockerzclub that was stickered on his black fazer.

After lunch we started off to Vellore, where we were sent off by Ananth and Kartik who had some work there. Sriram, Aravinth and the other Sriram continued on, while I and Jafar had to stop to tighten up my claw. The NH 46 was also very good. I think its a 6 lane highway, so there was no problem riding continuously at 100-120 The objective was to get as close to Chennai as possible before night fall. We saw that biker guy again on the way, he gave us a thumbs up and we returned the favor and continued on.

The five of us stopped near Kanchipuram for tea and moved on towards Chennai. At Chennai Jafar and Aravinth left off through another route, while @SriramEfunds, @sriram0111 and I continued on. Near Sriperambadur, Sriram's bike once again started to give some trouble and we had to pull over. After sometime trying to fix his bike, I then decided to leave for home. I reached home by around 7 and got word that Sri managed to fix it and reached home.

On the whole it was a wonderful trip. At first I was speculating whether or not I would be able to keep up with the rest of the riders as I am still a newbie to long distance touring, but in the end everything turned out well. It had almost everything from high speed cruising to riding through heavy traffic to offroading (or rather Bouldering ) to twisties. We also had a small incident, and a couple of breakdowns. This ride has taught me many things and that I have to be ready for anything and everything. I must really thank the experienced fellows who rode with me and helped with tips on different occasions. I am hoping to do many more rides like this with them. This is one of the best rides I have ever done.

And here is a short vid we took of getting the fz up the trail that we found

We were to book in advance, but thanks to the poorly maintained AP Tourism website, we couldn't book it online. We made a deal with them once we reached Horsley Hills. The room that we were staying in was supposed to accomodate 5 people only, but we managed to get it for the 7 of us.
