          Re: LEH in 2012 & 2013

Day One & Day Two Which was Pune > Delhi > Chandigarh > Manali

Day 1st (28th Jun 2012) – Taking a flight - Spice Jet SG 212 from Pune to Delhi. From Delhi Air-Port to New Delhi Station by Metro. Boarding Kalka Shtbdi at 1715 Hours and reaching Chandigarh at 2130 Hours. Catching a Bus to Manali @ 2345 Hours.
Day 2nd (29th Jun 2012) – Reaching Manali in Moring by 9 O’clock. After Hotel Finalization Searching out for best bikes available around.

Now the real fun begins Reached Manali at Morning 6:00 AM got a Hotel for 900Rs (for 2 person) which is just before the Main Manali Bazaar road.

Regarding Hotel My Finding is you should not stay in Manali but should go to Vashisht which is 4 KM from Manali Main Market as Hotels are real cheap out there you can easily save up to 40 to 50% on Hotel in Vashisht and other important thing is all the rent bike shops are on the Road that leads to Vashisht & in Vashisht Market near the temple Lane.

We Freshen up and had our Breakfast till 9:00 AM and went on hunt for bike rental shop.

To be frank I have driven 1 L KM plus but on bullet might have done 4 to 5 Km (On friends bike). So, bullet was out of question we were looking out for Pulsar 220 /180 /150 Hero Impulse Hero CBZ / ZMR.

Search around for 2 hours but all they have with them is Bullet finally was able to find Yamaha FZ and he was quoting us 1100 per day…. not in a mud to reduce.

So we decide to look around a bit as we were not comfortable at what he was charging for the bike but another hour pass by no luck it was 12:30 AM (we were walking up and down in Vashisht)

So final decided to go back and Negotiate for FZ we reach there but bike was taken on rent for a day come back tomorrow they shop keeper said we were screwed up for the day. So started thing about bullet but heart and mind was not at all read but no option. So thought let’s have a food and then decide. Then came across a shop Manali Enfied rental shop and to our surprise in his garage 2 silver CBZ where there ….now there is a smile on both of our faces.

Had a talk with the owner got the deal for 900Rs per day he told us to come back at 5:00 PM till that time he will service the bike & you can drive both the bike and decide upon which one to take (yes we had planned to take one bike and not two …riding with a pillion)

Went back at 5:00 given the Deposit & ID proof ridden both the bikes and out of that one struck like a instant connect with a bike that this is it this the one we will take …. The hard day’s work finally paid off went back to the hotel for a sleep as the day 3 is the real deal when the journey starts to LEH……

The Important things which I missed to cover in the above comments

                  • At Rohtang La the a bowl of maggi is severed for 50 to 60Rs and Tea for 25 Rs and the stalls are pretty crowed not worth having your breakfast there Instead just 20 KM down to Rohtang La there are Dhabas below who severs very good food at cheap rate.
                  • We where more than happy with our chose to go with CBZ rather than Bullet as till reaching Sarchu we have seen 3 Bullets being non functional. (Engine oil Leaking / Puncture / Clutch Cable Broken)
                  • Always take a option of all inclusive with tent at Sarchu as they tent owners will give you tent for as low as 500 for 2 person but in Dinner & Breakfast they will charge you more.
                  • For 1800 to 1600 RS you can get Tents with attached toilet all inclusive of food.
                  • A Gum boots are very good choice rather than normal sport shoes tucking with poly bag.
                  • You can get Gum boots for 100RS in Manali Market.

                          Hi Tushir....

The bike performed extremaly well with weight of a pillion and bags.... On the way to Leh from upshi meat with a FZ150 rider he was solo still faced problem of engine knocking and bike been shouting down ...no such problems with CBZ though....Just look for an update might get time in this weekend will post more about the bike.. Thanks

                          ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

                          Day 4:-

We started our journey towards LEH at 8:00 AM in the morning I was experiencing a Actual Mountain Sickness. ((To avoid the same the expert will suggest you to lay down and relax but it was not working for me I started walking around slowly for 10 to 15 min & that helped me a lot rather than sitting down or laying))

I really enjoyed driving through Gata Loops the view was amazing with roads are been well maintain but roads from sarchu up to gata loops where in bad condition. We made to pang without any trouble & was not at all Hungry so had a bowel of vegetable Magge around 12:30. And started onwards journey it was fun to drive through More Plains. The road was pretty much in good condition with few diversions. Again we encountered a bullet with a problem & which was stuck in sand dunes so helped him to get back on the road he was driving solo.

                          Now the real problem started……

As we covered 20% of the Mighty Tanglang La the bike started pulling back and top of that our bottle of water popped out somewhere and we left with no water till Upshi. After covering 50% of tanglang we wear very much exhausted by riding bike in first gear and though of a break at 3:00 PM don’t know what happen but I fell a fast sleep in the shadow of a bike so a fellow bikers were passing by they wake me up and asked for everything is OK and my first word was water please they had very little water with them one sip I took and I looked at the watch it was 3:45 ….F*&^ I had fallen asleep for 45min and the other group riders asked me we have seen pillion with you & where is he ..my pillion was nowhere to be seen and then finally spotted him behind the rock he was fallen asleep tooooo.

Waked him up thanks to the other riders they have given us a coke bottle to refresh ...then the thoughts run wield that we are not going to reach Leh in time.. will have to stay back at upshi.

But the roads till uspshi was butter smooth and we could make it to upshi in one hours time from tanglang top… Took a much needed break at Upshi it was 6:00 PM on the clock when we left upshi for LEH which is 60KM away ....the route has scenic views where you drive between the valley we spotted 4 color's of the valley Red, Violate, Orange, blue…. Amazing …..

Finally we reached Leh at 8:30 PM took a Hotel Chospa on the main street for 1200 per day. (Food was not at all good)

End of day four for us.......

                              Day 5:-

Got the Breakfast done in Germen Bakery which was really very good. Went to DC office for getting permits it took us around 1 hour to get the permits for Nubra and also thought of showing the bike to Mechanic what can be done as the bike was pulling back.

The solution he did was put a copper wire in the jetting as the oxygen intake was less the copper wire made the fuel supply also equally less. That worked wonders for us and he only charged 50Rs for the same.

We were Exhausted haven’t seen anything in Leh city expect the hotel road ….time was running out so thought of just traveling to khardungla pass and back.

So we started Our ride to Kardungla and the bike was not at all pulling back and we were able to riding it in 3rd Gear that was a real sigh of relief. We were back from Kardungla at 4 O’Clock so had pretty much good time in our hand to roam around Leh. Did a couple ups and downs. Visited the Tibetan Market Fare which is in front of J & K Bank (Real good place to get the Tibetan product at reasonable cost)

Sad Part was not able to make it to Nubra…….

                              Day 6 / Day 7 / Day 8:-

Day 6 We had planned to travel back with 2 and half days in our hand so divided the Journey of way back accordingly while leaving Leh visited the Thikse Monastery on the way and we reached Pang at 6 O’clock this time tanglang la was not of a trouble and decided to stay back at tent s in pang for 150Rs per bed the food was good. Enjoyed the stay….

Day 7 We started late around 8 in the morning and had many more stops in between as no hurry still we managed to reach Darcha at 5 O’clock and I had a heavy Rajma Rice and was not in mood of traveling to keylong or jispa and at 5 only called it a day…..

Day 8 Had to struggle a bit as there was land slide at rohtang pass but still manage to reach Manali at 3:00 O’clock and return the bike and had our deposit back…….

So that was pretty much end of our Dream journey and we where headed back to our home town…..
