  • Goa reloaded! Summer of 14

“This log has been inordinately delayed”! Our annual Goa holiday ride was sandwiched between too many events this year. A project at Dharwad which had to be completed, a feature on us was coming up in the June edition of the xBhp magazine, so photos to be sent, questionnaires to be answered and then the xBhp “Great India Collectors Ride” was coming to Bangalore and we just had to meet them and all our other friends. All together an eventful and exiting period.

Finally I decided that I at least have to start the log and fill it up as and when.

    The Onward Route: Bangalore/Tumkur/Hiriyur/Chitrdurga/Davengere/Harhar/Haveri/Hubli/Ramnagar/Anmod/Molem/Ponda/Majorda.

Just a day after returning from our project work at Dharwad, we get set to ride off to Goa. Wifey had already got most things ready (it’s become really routine for her now!). It’s a two week stay so we have to pack judiciously, there’s a limit to how much we can load our little Zeus, strong as she is, but we also need enough to see us through the fortnight. Luckily we will be staying at our regular homestay and casual is cool in Goa.

So on a cool May morning we head off on the highway, the same one I had just driven back from Dharwad a couple of days back. The difference of course was the minus two wheels, the wind on our face and of course the destination!

The fresh morning air, the joy of two wheels on the highway is a feeling only us biker’s can understand and relish, it also builds an appetite. We stop over at Tumkur for a ‘thatte idly’ breakfast. The stuff is good but the place is insanely crowded in the mornings and can be frustrating at the start of a ride. I would prefer Hotel Naveen at Chitradurga on the highway, much more relaxed and quick.

The NH4 from Bangalore to Hubli as most of us know can even get boring, but it is the quickest route and having done it so many times (on work and holiday) it’s become all too familiar.

We reach Hubli by noon and decide to have an early lunch before continuing. There’s a Punjabi Dhaba near the toll gate before the bypass road which serves decent stuff and we have a light lunch and replenish our water stock before heading out.

A little before Dharwad, we turn off onto the Goa Road and towards Ramnagar and Molem forest. This stretch used to be in a horrible condition for years and most of us avoided it and chose alternate routes. The road is now brand new but there are too many railway crossings enroute which can be irritating.

The Molem forest, though is beautiful and with the new road quite enjoyable to ride through. We soon cross Karnataka into Goa and as always it’s a special feeling, a ‘coming back home’ feeling and anticipation of some joyful days to come !

COMING UP, CELEBRATING GOA AND OUR ANNIVERSARY !

    CHEERS !

Nice so far, just an idea, when you travel why not send some of your luggage by bus, that way you can travel less restricted...
Beware of Bread, don't say I didn't warn you!
More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

                    Thanks a ton DS

By evening we are at Majorda and check into our regular homestay. It belongs to our good friends Franco and Suzane and it’s a quiet place away from crowds but also just walking distance from the beach.

Goa always fascinates us, like it does to many people I guess. For us though, it has a special meaning since we were married here in 1994. Since then we have always been drawn to this beautiful state where we have numerous wonderful friends. It’s a place where can really relax and unwind, a place where we can do literally nothing for hours on end!

We make it a point to make early morning rides when it’s really cool and pleasant. The roads in Goa are truly amazing and its always a joy to ride through them. Early mornings are also when the numerous beautiful churches are open and a short visit to get a blessing is a great start to our day. It’s also the time to check out the markets, especially the fish market which throbs with sellers and buyers of all kinds. We can really feel the pulse of the place and like our Goan friends for whom fish forms an essential part of their daily menu, we also get to pick up some fresh seafood for the day.

And the beaches! Even after what seems like countless visits, we never tire of an early morning walk to breathe in the fresh sea breeze and watch the fishing boats come in. Its rejuvenating and energizing and a great way to build a healthy appetite.

The evenings are another story, the glorious sunsets, each one so different and so special, we never cease to admire and rejoice at this spectacular display by nature. And as the sun slowly disappears over the horizon, the beach shacks wake up to welcome the night.

Finally the sun goes down in a blaze of glory ! End of another glorious day !

Coming up : A ride to the amazing Cabo de Rama !

Thanks Stefan. I understand your suggestion. In fact some years back we did exactly that, we sent our luggage by Paulo Travels and picked it up at Madgaon, but now with our saddle bag we've learn't to pack "wisely"

Our Ride To Cabo de Rama

One lazy morning on a whim, we decided to ride to Cabo de Rama or Cape Rama Fort as it is known. Named after Lord Rama its located near Canacona at the southern part of Goa. It is also one of the oldest forts in Goa

It’s a pleasant ride to the fort through fishing docks, backwaters and some lonely stretches through cashew groves. The fort itself is dilapidated and not many tourists were to be seen, but the views from the top of the fort is truly breathtaking and really worth the ride to get there.

There is a small Church dedicated to St.Anthony built by the Portuguese like most other Churches in Goa.

Though like most forts, there is a melancholy feeling around you, the views are so enchanting that it is irresistibly magnetic !

We need to force ourselves to leave, we feel we could just sit here for hours !

After the customary clicks to add to our archives, we ride back to Majorda.

                            The Final Part.....Next
