  • Escape from the heat....off to Narkanda

    Prologue :

It was quite a time I was out on road with my baby CBR. The last time, it was in November 2013 when we went to Jaipur with fellow xbhpians as weel as freinds. That time I decided I would go smewhere, anywhere at once in 3 months if not more. Come Jan 2015, I started to search for the suitable destination. Since was busy with some personal commitments till mid-Feb, the tour had to in March or April. The destination had to be a hill so that I could escape from the heat of Delhi. The options were a lot of them. Rishikesh/Manalii/Mussoorie/Mcleodganj were some options and many came in later. Somehow there were some issues and someone or the other from our freinds group had to drop out from the trip due to some reason. And because one member dropped out, rest all did drop out. And this continued till mid year (June) when I decided to break free. Initially a decided to go to Chail. Heard its a quite place so it sounded like a apt place to relax. The plan was ride down to Chail on 4th of July, stay there for a day and ride back to Delhi on 6th. Now I was eagarly waiting for the day. In the meantime, I discussed the plan with Mukul who at once agreed to join me. So it was two of us now. A few days after I disclosed my plan in front of my whatsapp group and invited anyone who wanted to join us. Then came in Akash....but his bike was not in good condition. He wanted to go but bike was the main problem. I advised him to let go of this trip and promised him I would accompany him whenever he planned the next one ...even if it was next month. But you know how it feels inside when some of your freinds go on a trip and you cannot, specially to the hills. So Akash got his bike repaired and gave a thumbs up for the trip. That took the count to three. But Akash didn't wanted to go to Chail. I asked him to research and decide the destination. As long as it is outside Delhi and doab;e in 3 days, I was ok with any place. So finally couple of days prior to the ride he came up destination to be Narkanda. So finally Narkanda it was!!!!!

Now the wait for friday began.....but it had its own surprises.

Re: Escape from the heat....off to Narkanda

Finally, the week had arrived at the end of which I had to go on the trip. Each day of the week felt like a long year. In the meantime Omid confirmed that he will be joining us along with his brother and a freind. So the group had expanded to 6 people now. Everyday I checked google maps for the way to Narkanda, checked various websites for accomodation. But the work pressure at office kept me from calling the hotels to book rooms. Finally, we entered into thursday, and froday early morning we had to begin our ride. Got off from work, went home, did a final check of the things packed, added some last moment stuff and started waiting for the time I had to leave. As all know the time just before the ride begins is too restless so I discused with the other group members and pre-poned the meeting time to 11 pm. So I got ready and reached the meeting point (GT Karnal road) by 11:15 pm and the wait begun. The other members came in by 11:45 pm and there was a surprise. At the last moment Sneh decided to join us and also there was another freind of Omid who joined us which made us a group of 8 with 6 bikes. Omid was carrying his brither as pillion and the other two freinds came on a single bike. So the line up was as follows :
          Sid(Me) : CBR250R
          Sneh : CBR250R
          Mukul : FZ
          Akash : FZ
          Omid/Mehul : P220
          Piyush/ Abhishek : P200

After a small introduction, we stared rolling to stop at Sukhdev dhaba, Murthal for a brief planning. We had a brief halt at Sukhdev. We decided on where our next stop would be, what would be the formation of the group, who would lead and who would sweep and gave the new riders a coule of instructions such as to maintain a distance from the bike in front,no overtaking, always to keep an eye on the rvm for the rider coming behind etc.

At around 3 am we were ready to roll with next stop at McDonalds Zirakpur. Since we had two new riders and that too pillion, we knew we would have to take unplanned stops because the pillions were carrying the luggage on their shoulders and that would exhaust them faster.

We were travelling at a good pace and by 12:30 pm we did enter the Himalayan expressway. Hills were in the sights and the guyss were already charged up. Don't know what happened but even after working for the whole of thursday and then riding the whole night, we were delighted to have the first look at the hills.

Everything was going as per the plan apart from us being a few hours behind the schedule. Never mind, we were travelling for fun and what fun would it be without some unplanned events. The climae God had blessed us with good climate all our way and it seemed to be sunny on the way to Shimla. We took a short break just after crossing the Himalayan expressway toll and off we were. Suddenly the motogp rider in us were awakned and we started enjoying the corners. The next couple of hours was the combination of smooth roads, awesome cornering and a few crazy moments. By around 3, we had crossed Shimla and between Kufri(i don;t know the exact name of the place). We decided to take a lunch break. After the lunch, we started getting ready to move ahead when Sneh told us his CBR's clutch wire has gone bad. Abhishek was feeling some power loss in his P200. So the hault was extended, Akash and Sneh took the two bikes to the nearby mechanic and got them fixed. We all packed up and started moving when Akash's Fazer won't start. Me, Mukul and obviously Akash stayed back to get the Fazer ffixed when we sent the others ahead. Right at that time the clouds began gathering posing a danger of rains.

          Now enjoy some natural beauty....

Re: Escape from the heat....off to Narkanda

Now the real pain started. The mechanic quickly fixed Akash's bike and we were on our way but Akash's Fazer won't climb the steep climb. We again went back to the mechanic. He started his diagnosis. And on top of that it started raining heavily. The mechanic tried many things like he cleaned the fuel tank, carbuerettor, spark plug. He also swapped the carburettor with Mukul's fz but that didn't work. Finally after 5 long hours we were able to get Akash's bike fixed. The mechanic had done a jugad which is generaly needed in Leh - got a wire into the carb. It was already 7 pm and dark.

Wait....the bad time was not yet over. Sneh and co. had reached Narkanda already but they were unable to find any rooms to stay since there was a film shooting going on and all the hotels were already booked. Finally we decided that me, Akash and Mukul will search for a place to stay in Kufri and Sneh and others would search around Narkanda. We will spend the night in 2 grous and the next morning we will join them in Narkanda. But the almighty had thought of something else for us. Though we were able to find room for we 3, we called up Sneh for confirmation when he said they didn't get any room. So we took another couple of rooms for the whole group. This wasn't the problem, the problem was Sneh and ther members of the grou would have to ride down to Kufri in dark and rainy roads. Anyways couldn't help. The other members of the group joined us in Hotel Kufri Holiday Inn at around 11 pm. We already had ordered dinner. So everyone had dinner and went to sleep since veryone was tired after one whole day's riding.

                    Great clicks.
BTW my brother-in-law's FZ(42000 km.s in 4 years) has done many high altitude tours including Bhutan and Assam from Kolkata. Never let him down. Might be some particular issues with that bike.

Re: Escape from the heat....off to Narkanda

Our plan for the day was to make it to Chitkul but due to the tiring day yesterday most of our freinds woke up late. We all woke up and had finished brekfast by 12 pm. Starting after 12 pm we would not be able to make it to Chitkul and back. So we decided to just visiit Hatu peak and come back by dark. And leave back for Delhi early next day. On the way to Hatu peak we had a photo session. The ride to Hatu comprised of amazing tarmac and then steep muddy climb to the peak.

Soon we reached Hatu. As soon as we started the climb, we saw a film shooting going on there. We noticed Arshad Warsi standing there. He waved at us and some of us waved back. We didn't have the time to stop by. It might have been a nice view for himm as well. 6 bikes, one after other, riders all geared up. Anyways, the climb to Hatu peak was steep and muddy. And the rain previous day worsened the patch. We were toggling between 1, 2 and 3 rd gears of our bikes. That was when I again felt the torque CBR had which eased my climb.

After almost 1 hour, we finally reached at the Hatu peak. We found a temple there. The view from the peak was just awesome, cannot be described in words. It was time for another photshoot session where all of us started getting shot with our beloved machines.

Almost by 6 pm, we packed up and started moving ffrom the peak. The reason being the sudden change in weather. Thee clouds had darkened and rains were iminent. We didnot want to face the slippery muddy roads on our downhill journey. When we just reached the foot hill of Hatu peak, the weather got better and again we witnessed the sun. We again took a halt for snacks. Don't remember the exact name of the place ( i guess it was the HATU Holiday inn). we had so me nice snacks amongst the beautiful view of the greenery of the hills. It was so soothing to the soul.

We reached our hotel back by 7 pm. Then we all sat together chatting among each other, discussing the various events that we went through in the last 2 days. We were discussing our riding, the beautiful hills, world cup FIFA, the hectic work life back in Delhi and such other topics. Soon enough we had our dinner and some of us went to bed and the rest were watching football worldcup. We had such a nice sleep both the nights without even fan/AC/cooler. The two places(Delhi and Kufri) were just 400 kms apart but had such difference in climate. Its freaking hot in Delhi and it was so pleasant in Kufri.

As all other thiings in life, this trip had to come to an end. So we all woke up on Sunday to return back to Delhi. With heavy heart we ledt the place but with an hope that we will be back in the hills soon. Our journey back home started at around 1 pm. The weather was good and supportive , we reached the Himalayan expressway toll by around 3:30 pm. The traffic was heavy due to the people returning back to Delhi from their native place at the end of the weekend. We made it to KFC - Zirakpur by 6:30 pm. We had nice break and filled our tummy. Then the home run begun and by around 9 pm we made it till Murthal. We took the last tea break of our trip. We all wer e already exhausted by the heat of the plains and already planning to go back to the hills soon. I left a little early than others since I had to go to work early next day.

I reached my home around 11:30 pm, thus ending a beautiful 3 day journey. The US Inpendance day became the reason for us bikers to free ourselves from the hectic boring life and have some fun.

With this, I end my narration of the trip to Himalayas, until nest time.
