  • [Photo Feature]: Day Rides

I more often than not do short rides from Pune on the weekends. The close by places are Wai, Panchgini, Lonavala, Amby Valley and Lavasa. Most of these destinations are a round trip of around 150km and make for quick breakfast runs. I am usually joined by my buddy Gurpratap riding his Triumph Bonneville and who is perhaps one of the most enthusiastic bikers I know. Our wives sometimes join us but then we keep the throttle down. So without further ado, let the pictures to the talking.

The first set of pictures is with my friend Nikki who rides a KTM200. This was a ride to Lavasa accompanied by our friends on their Royal Enfields and Gurpratap's Honda 550-4 (Sweet sound). The twisties on this lovely stretch of tarmac is superb and makes for a quick refreshing ride to get those juices flowing over the weekend.

These pictures are from a ride to Lavasa with our RE gang. Kurush got to ride his Yamaha RD350 for the first time. Hughes and Chantal who were visiting India are avid bikers who continued on to the East and North to see our great Country on a bike. They joined us and surprisingly were fairly adept at riding in our road conditions (read as, road sense).

Apologies for the poor picture quality.

            Re: Day Rides

All the day rides covered here are from the last eight months.

This set of pictures was from another ride to Lavasa. Bikerni Rani joined us on her RE500 and proceeded to injure her finger whilst on the ride. She has now been fondly christened "nine finger Rani". This ride was in summer so the going was sweaty. Jeetu rode my R15 which was out for a ride after a long time. It was good to see that bike's tail-light disappear to reach the top of the hill first.

              Re: Day Rides

This set of pictures was from a morning ride to see the Fiat plant in Ranjangaon. On the return leg, the air filter flew off from one of the RE bikes. Gurpratap was still doing the run-in of the Bonnie, so the throttle was turned down, which in any case made sense as this stretch is a busy road dominated by trucks, cars and pedestrians crossing at the numerous small towns that dot this highway.

This was from another ride with Nikki to Wai. Nikki has the GoPro which is fabulous to capture memories with. Good ride that buddy!

This set of pictures was taken outside Bajaj Auto gate whilst on the return leg from Lonavala. Lonavala is our favourite destination for breakfast, but not for the quality of ride.

                        Re: Day Rides

This set of pictures are from a ride we did back in December 2013. This was intended to be a 2 night ride to a place near Panchgini (tents) and then Dapoli on the western coast, but eventually turned out to be 3 nights, the 3rd of which was spent at Mahableshwar. This ride was plagued with breakdowns, punctures, upset tummy, frayed tempers by some, but most of all, we came away richer for some super memories. Ishaan an avid RE biker from Delhi was visiting Pune and joined us on this ride. We encountered some horrendous traffic jam in the evening at Mahableshwar - this was a long weekend, so this is just a heads up to all those who might be headed here in similar situations.

                          Re: Day Rides

This set of pictures was from a ride Kurush and I did in May this year to Goa. The ride was fantastic with Amboli ghat in good shape for a change. I was able to open up the throttle of the Ninja on the fantastic short stretch of road between Kolhapur and Nipani. We stayed in South Goa, which adds about one-and-a-half hours to the ride time. The only downside to riding was the weather which began turning hot post 11am and then humid in the pm when we were in Goa. My wife & daughter alongwith Kurush's fiance and sister accompanied us by car to Goa, so we were able to ride sans luggage.

                              Re: Day Rides

This set of pictures is from our Independence Day Ride a few days ago. This time I joined the "Sore Arse Riders" MC. The group was doing a three day ride to Hampi (700 km) and constitutes of riders from Mumbai and Pune. The plan was to accompany my friend Sunit who is a member of the MC to meet with the others at the MacDonalds just after the Katraj tunnel and then accompany them till Wai before we turned back. We reached the meetup point at 7am to catch up with everyone. For me it was meeting a great bunch of souls after a five year hiatus. The MC has expanded over the years from the number of riders, the bikes and waistlines (all a sign for a happy bunch of folks). The bikes were a fabulous treat to ride with like the Hayabusa, BMW 1200R, 2 Honda Valadero's (there are only three such bikes in India, of which two belong to this group), 2 Ninja 650, Vstorm, Comet250 and a CB400-4 (sweet sound). A funny incident occurred whilst riding to Wai when I hailed down a rider from the Jawa club (who were incidentally also heading to Hampi albeit an overnight halt at Belgaum). We were crawling up the ghat before Wai amidst pouring rain and traffic when I hailed down one of the Jawa riders who panicked for some reason and began to go off road into the slush to bring his ride to a shuddering halt, when I asked him if Ashok Naidu (xbhp biker of the year) was also riding amongst them, to which he replied in the negative. Needless to say, I got out of this embarassing situation as quick as I could - apologies mate (whoever you are)! I patriotically returned home at 10.30am drenched (despite wearing a jacket liner) and caked with dirt. A memorable ride this one!
