  • Micro Adventures of a Katoom Rider

    Hi Brothers

This is going to be my journal of various weekend rides that I will do from Trivandrum, Kerala. I will be keeping this single thread for writing about various rides and places rather than starting a new thread for every ride. Hope you enjoy reading these micro adventures of a weekend warrior.

    Kumarakom

Suman Satpathy, my friend and a Ninja rider, wanted to ride to Kanyakumari on a Sunday. Though Kanyakumari is a great destination the road that leads to the place is not very appealing. Hence we decided to ride to Kumarakom.

Kumarakom is around 160 kilometers away from Trivandrum. The place is one of the hotspots for Kerala Tourism. The Vembanad Lake is the factor behind the appeal and it is very beautiful indeed.

Suman and I started riding at 6. 30 am. MC Road is a rider’s road. Sweeping wide turns and great surface makes it a merry ride road for a biker. What spoils the fun is the umpteen number of speed cams installed on the way. Every time I ride on this road it affects my bank balance coz of the numerous speed tickets that I get. Nevertheless this is one of the most rideable roads in Kerala.

The ride became slow and difficult once we crossed Chengannur. Your frustration mounts on this stretch of ride till you hit the Changanassery - Kottayam bypass. Soon the Ninja and the Oranje hit three digit speeds. One tends to free up all the horses on this straight and well surfaced roads but the joy is short lived as you come back to the bad stretch of MC road again till Kottayam. The 17 km from Kottayam to Kumarakom is a narrow, curvy, well paved road that can be a delight to ride if there is no traffic. In traffic it will be another slow unappealing ride.

Suman and I continued to ride further to Thanneermukkam Bund. It's like riding right into a waterworld. The road is almost at the water level and the expanse of water gives a meditative experience.

Since we did not do much research on the eateries around we decided to look for a place that looked clean and good. Sea food of this region has been much talked about and celebrated. That is not without a reason. Delicacies like ‘meen pollichathu’ may give you a trance. While at Kumarakom, gorging down plenty of this stuff shall be one of your agendas.

Hotel Green Fields may not be in the food map of Kumarakom at all but we were hungry and wanted to sit and eat somewhere comfortable. The property looked beautiful. The food was acceptable. The Karimeen Pollichathu was a more than average in my book.

After riding around for some more time we left Kumarakom for Trivandrum. The return ride was again predictably difficult till Chengannur. It was again great fun riding on the good stretches of MC road past Chengannur. As intermittent nuisance there are crowded small towns on the way but that is something you can't avoid while riding in a state like Kerala. It started raining after Adoor and the night fell fast. The headlights of the oncoming traffic looked like a kaleidoscope through the droplets on the visor.

Suman and I parted ways once we crossed Pothencode. It was a day well spent. The ride was all the more beautiful because of the spontaneity and we let things happen instead of any meticulous planning around it. I want to go back there sometime soon.

    Log Approved.

P.S. If you intend to keep updating this page, on this particular trip related posts/photos kindly PM any of the moderators, so that they can help you, if there should be any trouble. Secondly if you intend to lock this thread and intend to post the entire trip log in one go, we'd be glad to do that too, so that you have a single continuation and don't have intermittent posts in between.

    Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

Wow! Nice pics and we want more.

Can you also provide comparison between ninja 300 and duke 390 with respect to this ride. How duke 390 fared with ninja in terms of comfort, ergo, speed, handling etc.

            Thanks Cheetah

There are areas that both the bikes outscore each other. 390 for example is lighter and more flickable. Its better power to weight ratio means you can overtake super quick. Ninja on the other hand is more refined and sorted out. Build quality is a couple of notches above. Better wind protection means you can whip all those available horses compared to 390 where the wind blast forces you to be sane. Ninja also has a superlight clutch that is a definite boon while riding densely populated places. 390’s clutch is on a little harder side. Braking, I feel 390 is a tad better coz of those Metz and ABS. 390 is also more versatile bike. On handling, both bikes are extremely good. In our case, Suman is a better rider than me so Ninja dominated in all those great curves we rode.J. On ergo, once you get used to, both the bikes offer decent position that you can hold on to for long time. Ninjas seat is a bit more comfortable than the hard seat of 390. In my list the biggest advantage the Ninja has is the bigger fuel tank compared to the puny tank of 390.
But the fact that you will have to shell out almost double the price for the Ninja makes the 390 immensely more appealing than the green one.

Thanks Zorba for clarification.and you are right if price of both the bikes are similar then one will go for green eyes closed. But the price diff is almost 100% and this is very important factor for most of the middle class people. So it seems orange for me also.

Bting it on rest of the stuff, we are waiting!

Good going there. Hope to see you both pulling long rides. I agree with you on your points ninja vsKTM, though from experience (see pune to Ooty ride posted in the tourer section) in Feb, the ninja has far higher average speed on the highway due to less wind drag and buffeting. Vibrations are also far reduced on the ninja owing to a twin engine, which on longer rides play a crucial factor. Also, the slipper clutch is a boon on the twisties. But all-in-all, both bikes are well mated for riding together.

That's a good trip log Bro, loved reading the comparison you've made between the 390 and 300 as well. Let's do a ride together sometime, I'm also from Trivandrum. Only after seeing your last pic, I realized that we are FB friends. Hope you recognize me.
