Untold Story of the Best "Dream Ride" around Cold Frozen Deserts of Ladakh in 2008 on a GT-250

Its quite a long time ago, actually about 5 YEARS ago that his happened.
Till date its been the best trip of my life!!
In Many ways its been a First and thus left deep impressions in My Heart and Sole.

Every time I sat to write this log I haven't been able to get past the Crazy incidents that happened right at the beginning of the trip. I hope Will cross that and log the log this time.

I believe this story needs to be told before I forget most of it, especially as China is now encroaching most places that we visited. Also during my 2012 visit in the Jeep I was not allowed or Issued Permits to go to Many of these places that we did in 2008, thus both the above have inspired me to write the log Now.

We Rode from Chandighar to Himalayas & back to Ambala in 17 days from 18th July to 3rd August 2008 for about 2500 kms

    Highlights of trip as below
Excellent Team and luxury of a backup vehicle always.

For the First time I saw the Himalayan range & the magical Awe struck view when clouds cleared on the other side of Rothang Pass towards Keylong

For the First time Experienced AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) and co riders went BLIND momentary, we also had Oxygen administered to us in Military camps at Barlach La
    No Pics!!

Sink my Motorcycle in deep sand till the Tank level in Moyar planes

Met some of the warmest and most hospitable people in Leh Regzin Sir

Saw partially frozen lakes like Suraj tal and smaller ponds

Found Frozen carpus that's preserved in a Desert refrigerator near MarsMic La

Meditated and felt the close connection High up the mountain at more than 16000 feet

Were Chased by Cops, who threatened to call the Military too

Saw Chines White camp & our Green camps at Chushul

Saw the Pangong in all ist glory & stayed for a Night there too

Experienced Wifi & Internet in Wilderness middle of nowhere @ Hanley, saw the 2 meter wide telescope lens at world's highest observatory

Witnessed remains of a Witch and her cut hands hanging at Chumar Monastery

Were caught unprepared between two water streams and forced to camp out for the night by Pagal Nala

Magical night vision on a No moon with complete visibility as far as the eye could see, Earth was lit by a Zilion stars in the sky between Chumar & Mahe Bridge.
    No Pic.

    Cheers
    Sunil

              Thanks sir.

I have to Say have learnt most about Leh & biking around Ladakh from BCMTouring India Travel Forum and Community

We shipped most of our luggage to Ambala, stuff like tools kit, Sleeping bags, Air pump, Tent, huge jackets, Helmets et all were shipped in advance.

              My Medical Kit

Different Types of glows There is a Green Nylon one bought from the Military surplus shop that was too good and is missing in the pic here

Some Lights including Tent ones (these were rear back in 2008)

Parts sere ordered for the comet around 30K INR I guess from Richard Hyosung that got stuck at customs & we had to explain to get them released

Duck back rain suits, puncher kits, heck I now can spot a Turtel Wax box too

After all that look at our Luggage at the Airport

              Tent that we carried

Mods on my bike for the trip
              X ring chain

Alternate steel foot rest + crash guard

Shorted side-stand to stand slant (due to lowered CG of Micheline pilot sport 17-110-60 Front & 17-160-60 rear.

Non-contact Tachometer + carb tune with New K&N hi-flow Air filter

Had imported Michelin pilot sports & installed the same

One of the Best tires in terms of grip & rider conference, be it wet or gravel, but will ware out soon as its a soft compound rubber.

The Gathi Guys did not promises to delever the bikes without even small crashes, so we were looking for a better transporter and somehow came across Aakash Packing & Shipping Co <[email protected]>

look at the way we packed to sent our bikes from Penia Bangalore

All 4 of us from left to right, Prabu, Me, Sumit & Chetan at my house leaving to ship the bikes

              At the packers place

I would have *illed the guy in Blue shirt if I found him later!!

Chethan packs without any dust too

Thus Ends our preparation, we also did two trips to check out our comfort level with the bikes & luggage one was to Mutatthi & the other to Kodachadri (then considered a slush steep drive)

              Cheers
              Sunil

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

I am really thrilled to see ahead, great write and info.
But Bro I din't see any one till now spending more than 30K just for leh Ladhak trip on Two wheels only on spare parts. Great!!
One of my friend had opted for P180 for Leh ladhak trip instead of his Comet due to parts if needed.
Let all coming don't flow in an installment.
What was the cost of tyres ? and Total expense individually.

Hi Ryan, See what they did to the bikes below

Originally posted by chaosaddict View Post

Thanks Sure will do hear I go..

                          Day1:
We caught Our flight to Delhi, checked in all our luggage, Was Hot like Hell in Delhi, Spoke to a local taxi guy didn't know he was running a Taxi with whiteboard!
We saw like 5 Live Accidents on the Delhi Chandigarh Road & The Driver didn't stop at one to help them! Worst Experience ever I had
Once stopped for food at a Dhabha, opening the Travera door is like a Furnaces outside, from inside in AC & Tented Glass every thing looks so nice & Green also windy.
Post lunch (I still can remember Sarsoka sag & Dal Makhanne) Chathen opened a tap outside to wash hand and the water was so hot he literally burned his hands in the boiling water.

once in the Taxi to Chandigarh made calls to find out about the Bikes, NOW began the chain of issues!! they give one number after an other I spoke to like 6 different guys NO one know where the bikes are! it was like we have lost them, then they said the vehicle caring it had broken down some 50 odd kms before Chandigarh. Their Office was a Apartment House!!
We were forced to Take a room & Stay in Chandigarh, also made a Taxi & went out to the village where they mentioned the Vehicle was broken down, but didn't find any vehicle where they mentioned! bunch of lies, we were Very sad, helpless and severely demotivated Lost a Day and a Half in Chandigarh, the Next day about 11:00 AM we got our bikes at the outskirts of Chandigarh, I was TOTALLY out of control when we saw the state of our bikes, Wanted to Call up boys in Bangalore and ask them to take care of the transport folks in BLR, but don't know what really happened or if its common or normal but I am still not able to come in terms with it even after 5 years!! They took around 9K per bike in 2008, Didn't tell us what was happening & I had to spend around 17K after We came back to bring it back to glory, Worst they risked the entire trip & didn't care a Dam about it!!

                          Day2:
From what had happened to bikes, looks like they kept it like cattle as they have rubbing marks, Made food in the container that was carrying as we see packaging Burnt, Throned & tossed the bikes as seen on crash guard, silencer break levers, Lets the pics speak & May I have Will this time to go beyond this part of the log & describe the rest of it.

No Ramp, had to beg borrow from a Hotel Near by

This is there Agent in Chandigarh

We were Hart-broken & repaired as much as we could & start the Trip post lunch from Chandigarh on Day 2
One entire day lost!! We had Hired an India to carry our Luggage & we had Mohan Doss with us in the Taxi always.

                          Cheers
                          Sunil
