I had been wanting to get away from my mundane life for a long time and finally here I was at the Vasco Da Gama airport looking for a taxi to take me to my destination - The Baga beach. As i was heading to Baga, I realised how much i love this place, though i have been here just once before, somehow Goa feels like home.Be it the smell of the sea in the air, the carefree and colourful people or the the celebration/festive mood all year long or the the 'freedom' it offers . Yes, GOA smells and feels like FREEDOM. Unexpectedly the sky was clear and i knew that it would be a good next four days. I checked into the Sunrise cottage located 50 mtrs from the famous Baga beach, the
room was reasonably priced and with very basic amenities ,a bed, a 14'' TV and a clean bathroom. This was more than sufficient for me as i had better plans for the next 3 days than to stay in.
I have always loved walking along the beach. I love it when the water just comes to touch you and heads back only to come back with more force the next time, It might sounds crazy but i always felt like its trying to interact with you, establish a connection through those touches.
Some times its so forceful, it seems to be pushing you away and sometimes it turns back from just a few inches from you teasingly. Seas have always had a soothing effect on me, its peaceful, its calm. its almost like a meditation to me.
As i was walking along , a guy with green framed glasses approached me and invited me to have a beer at his Shack "The Red Lobster" . Little did i know then that it would become my den for the next 3 days. It was a shack just like many others on the beach but I just loved it here. I was sitting there having my 2nd beer enjoying the sight, the soothing sound of the wave when another staff asked me if he could clear the first bottle , he took the bottle and gave an amazing performance of juggling and balancing the bottle on the index finger. His name was Sunil and was from Mangalore working at the shack for the last few months. He sported a Cap with Russia printed on it, later i found out that it was gifted to him by one of his Russian girlfriends who had come there the last year. As I met the other guys working at the shack, I realised that they all had a short termed love story with the tourists to talk about . There were all around 20-22 years old coming from different states. Few others were Pandey from Jharkhand , Joseph from Manipur , John from Karnataka and Mithun (the guy with green framed shades) from West Bengal. They all had plans for their lives and working there in Goa at that shack was just a step towards that.In the off season when there were few tourists, they spent most of the time doing what liked to like trying some dance moves, mastering football skills to name a few.
Unlike the staff i have met at hotels/dhabas at other places, these guys were different. They seemed at ease, carefree and confident about themselves , couldn't put a pin to what it exactly was, but there was definitely something, I would call it something 'Goan' about them . As far as their income was concerned they were not salaried, the shack provided them with shelter, food and for every 1000 INR bill, they get Rs. 50 which in off season is a very high target and very low probability. That didn't dishearten them , they were happy and lived each day without worries. And it was reassuring to them that they would make up for it during the season when the place is flooded with tourists. Spent the a lot of time over the next few days talking , learning juggling tricks and playing football with them.
The sun was going down and there was many shade red spreading across the sky and i just sat there admiring the beautiful sight. It was getting dark, the ocean that was deep blue was turning black and you could just see a thick white line spread across the entire width of the sea . As the time passed away, the candles at the shacks were reducing and I walked barefoot along the beach and let the waves touch my feet . I kept walking till i could see almost no one or no lights around and then i just sat listening to the sound of waves. I realised that my love for the sea is cos it never lets me feel alone.I just sat trying to hear what they had to say and Then i decided to accept their invitation and take a plunge in the cold water to get better acquainted.
