  • Maiden saddlesore attempt from Ahmedabad

    Hi fellow riders,

I and my friend are attempting saddlesore 1000 this month.I have a pulsar220
The main point here is that we are riding pillion. So there are concerns which I want to get cleared with. The route we chose is Ahmedabad-Nashik-Mumbai-pune-Banglore which is almost 1625 kms. This is our maiden saddlesore attempt. Around 2 years back I went to Goa on my P220 riding pillion and reached there within 24 hours due to time crunch. So that was sort of mini attempt for us.
we are having a number of doubts here:
1 Is riding pillion totally advisable?
2 Will the route we selected be helpful for us?
3 What would be the main things we'll need with us?
4 which are the alternate routes (i.e. avoiding expressway ) for Mumbai - pune and Banglore - pune. ? The route has been a main point of confusion here.
    Thanks in advance.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

Re: Maiden saddlesore attempt from Ahmedabad

        1. Riding with pillion and attempting for saddlesore is definitely not advisable but can be done if and only if taking pillion is inevitable.
        2. I do not have much idea regarding the route. Fellow bhpians must be able to sort it out for you.
        3. Things you need to carry: proper riding gear that is comfortable for both you and pillion, tools kit, plenty of fluids like water, citrus fruit juice, oral rehydration salts, chocolate bars, dry fruits and nuts, GPS tracker. Take ample amount of breaks in between, its essential for the rider and the bike.
Break the entire route into small bits, calculate the time, distance and the avg speed you need to maintain, places of refuelling and let your goals be realistic rather than optimistic (like reaching place 'x' in time 'y'). Don't stretch yourself too far, if you don't make it then consider this as a dry run. There is always a next time.
I wish you good luck and I hope you achieve your goal, safely.

Careful, there. It WILL be difficult.

Do it only if you really care about the certificate which again, you may or may not receive.

The amount of time and money you spend on this aswell as the pain you go through for all of this, well, you could invest all of that elsewhere, in a better roadtrip. Please be wise, its a speed run, you are risking lives. We lost one brother attempting the BB, we dont want to lose another.

What about a relaxed trip ?
Never wanted to discourage you but I don't think pushing a 220 with a pillion at a time frame is advisable throughout India .Explore India with your friend .
Sometimes we may be lucky to maintain those good average speeds but if something goes wrong like a traffic jam and you push to make up for the lost time with the horrible handling 220 is not worth the risk(I do own a 220) .

Remember with a pillion your acceleration time increases so does the braking distance.

Its either a well planned solo with a very strong decision making skills or a leisure trip with a pillion .

I think a trip with a lot of stories and pictures will be more memorable than a risky SS.
If you are still OK with everything then start planning and the route with four lane road is the only way for covering distances without stress and yeah Mumbai to Bangalore or Pune to chennai will be super good .

You can still quench your thirst for high average speed by covering 700km a day and enjoy each city in your mentioned route .How about a trip to Bangalore, Coorg ,Mysore ,Bandipur,Ooty will be super fun with your friend and trust me you won't regret .

I VERY much echo what Samuel has to say!

SS with a pilion is not worth the risk, that too on a P220

I am also suggesting you to not to do SS that too with a pillion...!!

But...if you are able to ignore any suggestions from 100/100 people and rocksolid on your own decision with no hesitation at all... go ahead man do it but solo.

Whether to do it or not .. i will leave it to your wisdom.... about route... didnt understand.... if you are starting from gujarat then no need to go to Nashik.... from mumbai... take pune route.. old NH4.. avoid it on weekends and whenever you plan... plan to reach mumbai by 6:30- 7 am and leave the same... once the traffic starts... it will be difficult... a lot of work is going on at NH4... hence many diversions and broken roads till Kolhapur.. be advised... i will attempt for sure
but i want to know the route details
like there is a expressway between pune and banglore and generally bikes are not allowed on expressway so how do i get through there what is the best alternate route for the expressway

i am going to banglore from ahmedabad so those destinations are fixed the only route i could find that is 1620 km is

Do note that the entry & exit point of any city will have traffic .
I think pune - Mumbai has another road running parallel to expressway .

Do it on a week day and watch out for deepavali rush .
And try to reach Bangalore at or before 5am.
And bye pass every city .

Switch to Motul oil ,new air filter, cleaned chain.
If you are in a situation where in you have to average over 90kmph then its not advisable to push after that .

Remember to check the fuel pump location ,ATM location and proof etc so that you don't waste time scouting for one .

Stopping even for 5 min will affect avg speed and plus do accelerate real hard from 0 to 70 and don't refrain from cutting a gear to improve roll on timing all this matters to maintain a steady avg speed .

Be safe and all the best .

Is it just me or you seem to be mixing a lot of things together for this ride, which happens to be a saddle sore.
Reading your post, one can easily make out the thirst for adventure you and your pillion must have. I appreciate that. Never let it go.
I'm just confused by several things your posts reflect which doesn't go with a "SaddleSore".
You can be anything but a doubtful person when it comes to saddlesore(except the route thing). Questions/doubts you posted (apart from the route) shouldn't be there in the first place for any person sanely capable of attempting a saddlesore.
I'm unaware of the gravity of your intent of a)taking a pillion b)going to Bangalore c)mixing the above two in a saddlesore, but if it's the adventure that you seek sans the above first two inevitable points, I'd suggest you look up north and explore Ladakh. I guarantee you and your friend would have ten times more adventure and an experience of a lifetime with a sense of achievement.
But if it's the certificate and the feat of doing a SaddleSore(which bdw is a native concept of a civilization that has the means and the infrastructure to do it safely) Go ahead and do it karthik, All my best wishes and prayers with you. Just don't be doubtful of trivial things, Confidence Calm Composure shall definitely see you through it safely.
All the best of luck !!!
                        Regards

Good to see someone attempting this from Ahmedabad! Never give up and try for it. Your queries are right and you must plan properly before you leave. While I'm not aware of P220's ability to take this up or your endurance to complete this along with Pillion... I'm quite sure, route you are taking is tricky. You will definitely face traffic near Nashik, Mumbai & Pune. Must avoid that. How about starting this from Pune, going Bangalore and coming back to Bangalore? Here's someone else's experience of saddlesore on this route: Ironbutt Saddlesore 1000 miles - The mind game - Ride till I die
That route is quite well, without traffic and ideal for saddlesore. All the best and keep us updated!!
