  • M x 3 Mahe, Mananthavady, Madikeri, Ride and Rain!

October, the monsoon seemed to be retreating and bright sunny days were cheering us up. Diwali was around the corner and holidays and extended weekends seemed to be queuing up. For us bikers, these happy combinations were irresistible and a ride was, I guess, inevitable.

So on Diwali eve, we decide to hit the highway, preferring the beat of our bike, the silence of the woods and the quiet sound of gurgling streams to the high decibel sounds of fire crackers and smoke to give our ageing eardrums and lungs a break!

It was a hasty plan hatched at the last moment, but then, when did a destination really matter to us? The ride was all that mattered.

    The Onward Route: Bangalore/Mysore/Hunsur/Gonikoppal/Iritty/Mattannur/Kuthuparamba/Thalassery/Mahe

        Thanks a lot DS Adopted!

My apologies to all, the log got posted inadvertently just as i was starting it, will continue...

The morning was pleasantly chill and since the real weekend hadn’t yet begun, traffic was thin on the normally crowded Bangalore/Mysore highway. We stop at Mandya at our regular breakfast joint. After some hot idly vadas and coffee we are off again and shortly after Srirangapatna we head on to the now too familiar Hunsur/Madikeri road.

Even after numerous rides on this road to various destinations, it still is a joy to ride on this stretch as many of our biker friends will testify. Often tree lined and cool with fields of green on both flanks, it makes us slow down to take in the very feel.

A little after Hunsur, we branch off to the left towards. Gonikoppal This road used to be a nightmare some time back and I remember on our ride to Kannur, some years back, we had taken an entirely different route. Since I already had a feedback on this stretch from some biker friends, I decided to take this road.

It’s a beautiful newly laid road except for a 10km stretch where road work is in progress and once past that its bliss!

Riding through beautiful Coorg is always a joy and as we descend towards Kerala, those ever endearing curves through forested area lifts up our spirits!

Soon we reach the Kerala border and a dilapidated sign board welcomes us, belying the fact of the true beauty of this gorgeous state.

        Rest .. up soon!
        Cheers !!

            Thanks Santosh

Past Iritty and Mattannur and on towards Thalassery, we take a deviation towards Pazhassi Dam, named after Pazhassi Raja, (1753) one of the earliest freedom fighters of India

After a short visit to the dam, we head back towards Thalassery and Mahe.
As we pass through Thalassery, dark clouds gather seemingly out of nowhere. Fooled by the clear blue skies, we hadn’t carried rain gear and shortly we had the first of our many drenching on this ride! We reach Mahe soaked and check into a hotel. Luckily the clothes in our saddle bags were wrapped and dry.

The rain disappeared as quickly as it came and after changing into some dry clothes we head out for lunch and to explore a bit. Mahe being a Union Territory (under Pondicherry) and sandwiched between Thalassery and Calicut (Kerala) seems to be a tipplers paradise! You could close your eyes and toss a pebble and 9 out of 10 it would surely hit a wine store!

The next morning we rise early and take a ride to the seaside. While we had witnessed some amazing sunrises on the East Coast Pondicherry, we have to wait till evening to watch a sunset here. The morning was cool and pleasant and the distinct French flavor was evident, from the old colonial structures to the quaint French style police uniforms.

We decide to head out to Wayanad after lunch and the bright sunny day belied the drenching which lay ahead!

Coming up, Wayanad and Coorg and more drenching!!

                  Thank You

After a relaxed seafood lunch we head out towards Mananthavady ( a part of Wayanad and very close to Nagarahole National Park).

                  Route: Mahe/Nadapuram/Kuttiady/Makkiyad/Mananthavady
The initial part of the ride was great, scenic and beautiful and as we begin to climb the hills, we see fluffy clouds sitting on the hilltops. As we climb further, reveling in the sights, we begin to feel a chill wind blowing. A slow drizzle started and we speeded up, I wanted to reach Mananthavady before dark since I’m not too comfortable riding at night. The drizzle soon became torrents and we were soaked to the skin once more. We tried to stop at a shelter for a while but since we were already soaked, we decided to ride on and managed to reach our friends place shivering with the cold and totally wet.

We couldn’t take any pictures since our camera and mobiles were packed in waterproof cases in our bags.

The next morning after goodbyes to our friends, we leave early towards Coorg. The morning is bright and sunny totally in contrast to the evening before. Mother Nature can thrill and also tease you with her various moods!

The ride from Mananthavady to Kushalnagar is one of my favorite stretches. The beautiful forests of Wayanad and the coffee estates of Coorg. A short break for a hot cup of coffee and as we pass through a stretch adjoining Nagarahole National Park

                  Route:Mananthavady/Tholpetty/Gonokoppal/Siddapura/Kushalnagar/Bylakuppe
Shortly we reach Bylakuppe where we are to halt for the day. In spite of many visits, we still like to spend some time around the Golden Temple, interacting with the monks just to soak in the calmness.

As evening sets in and most of the tourists depart, a silence sets in and the highlighted Temple in the background just adds to the quiet ambiance of the place.

The next morning we planned to ride up to Madikeri for breakfast before our return ride back home. As usual it was bright and sunny and just when we were nearing Madikeri, another thunderstorm struck giving us the third drenching of the tour! Okay we said, enough is enough and turned back to Bylakuppe.

Bylakuppe was dry and after a change of clothes and breakfast, we start on our return ride. But Mother Nature wasn’t done with us yet. As we neared Mysore, another heavy downpour hit us making it a clean FOUR!

We kept riding through intermittent rain and shine until we reached home. Definitely a ride to remember for more reasons than one!

                  Cheers Guys!
