Re: Solo Motorcycle Trip Kerala - Goa - Bangalore 8 Days 3200 Kms.

" If you never chase you dreams you will never catch them "

            Prologue

I still remember my first attempt to ride a geared motorcycle. A friend of mine owned an Yamaha crux & my initial attempt to ride it went really bad as my first take went like a Wheelie. We both fell, broke bike and had bruises. From that day I became a real biker, who always dreamed of doing long road trips. During my college days my friend bought a new pulsar 150, at that time very few owned bikes in our college. I started doing pillion rides with him, which was indeed my first road trips. Not that much distance maximum of 150kms, but it was enough for me to fill my thirst. When I got my first job together with my brother we bought a new Pulsar 180. Since last 5 years I did numerous trip locally where ever that cover in my salary. Back in 2011while I was working in Goa, I did a trip to Dudhsagar water falls along with my friend kiran. To reach the falls we did 13kms Off-Roading crossing two big water streams. That inspired me a lot in doing big trips.

Last year I moved to Dubai to start new job. Few months back we did a cross country road trip across Oman to salalah which I already posted in my previous thread. Over this time I was preparing myself to do a long trip physically and mentally. I started learning swimming to keep my muscles active and strong. My initial plan was to do either ladakh trip or go up to Delhi from Kerala. Unfortunately due to my work I was not able to get leave before December end. B'coz of that i dropped ladakh plan as it is not good to ride during winter times. When i asked for help regarding the route plan one of the xhp moderator advised me about considering cold weather in the northern parts. As this is my first ever long ride, i was bit afraid about doing it. Finally I decided to do a south Indian trip in which Goa is targeted as main location. I worked in goa for almost 2 year's, this trip will help me to refresh my nostalgic goan memories.

To get ready to drive long distance my bike underwent a major service. Replaced old chain and sprocket, clutch & accelator cable, spark plug, air filter all with new one's. Engine oil, fork oil & gas, front disc fluid level checked. After service it gained back all its strength and showed its thirst to hit the road. Started collecting the necessary items required for the trip. Rave reviews floating across web prompted me to buy Viaterra Claw as luggage bag, SCOYO MC-15 Water proof Riding gloves, New Yorker riding jacket. The road trip itinerary was not fixed, I have 8 to 9 days to spare in which Goa set as primary target. Choose WAYAND - COORG - JOG - GOA as my initial route plan starting on jan 5th and reaching Goa by jan 10th or 11th. The ride went very well & reached goa by 9th itself. which prompted me to reschedule my plan and set Bangalore as my final destination. Two wheels, one soul, 4 states, 8 days & 3200kms - my first ever solo bike trip finished successfully.

            Day 1

            Karungappally - Wayanad Start 6.30AM - End 6.15PM 451kms

My mom was watching all my preparations in the past few days without a single idea what I'm up to. Her concern was "why you are not taking your friends & going alone ???", "what you will eat while on road", typical mom's things. All set, cold January morning fog forcing the sun rays to come down late. A perfect start for my journey said goodbye to my mom and left. Hit NH 47 towards cochin, my first pit stop for today's journey. If you are aware of pot hole filled kerala roads, then you know hard it is to ride especially in a two wheeler. Luckily the traffic was very less & i was able to cover the first stretch in 2 1/2 hrs. Already had breakfast at home my tummy was full, few sips of water and i'm on again. As planned i did continuous 100kms stretch and took brakes in between which helped me to stretch my back & give some rest to bike also. Even 5 minutes stops will help you to relax a lot. Next stop was calicut reached there by 1.30PM. By the time hunger strikes, stopped for lunch in one of the good joints near the highway. Afterwards took NH 212 route towards wayanad to ride the famous "Tamarassery Churam". As plenty of lights still left opted to see thusharagiri water falls on the way. After reaching half way towards thusharagiri a PWD road block sign came up. Locals informed it need some detour to reach the falls as the normal one is undergoing some maintenance work. Thought about it some time and dropped the plan to visit the falls. Back to wayand route again. Oops just realized until now i didn't click a single picture. I was so concentrated on my drive and forget to do so . Stopped for few shots at lakkidi view point where you can have a clear view of hair pins curves. Rode another hour to reach manathavadi by 6.30pm, and called it a day after 451kms.

            Day 2

Kuruva Island - Iruppu waterfalls - Madikeri 190Kms

I had been to Waynad before and visited most of the place already. One place which left unvisited was Kuruva Island. Left room by 7 am had breakfast and headed on to kuruva. I always loved to ride through morning fog. When reached there the whole place was deserted, one of the locals said the place will open around 9.30pm only. Forest guard will do a routine check in the island before allowing the visitors as a precaution against wild animals mainly elephants. literally spent more than 1 hr waiting for the ticket counter to open. A short bamboo raft ride will take you to the island from mainland. If you love nature and its beauty this place is for you. Lush green forest along with morning fog place is a paradise for photographers. Small trek will take you to a stream where you will end your journey. I heard about few other islands connected to this when asked about guards informed due to some drowning accidents entry to other small islands are banned by forest department, it’s sad.

Now its time to pack my things and leave Wayand. Dropped at a restaurant near Nisarghadama a tourist destination for lunch. Packed all my stuff left wayand towards madikeri. Tirunelli temple an ancient temple on the side of Brahmagiri hills was my final destination in wayand. Al last I’m happy to leave behind pot hole filled Kerala roads to silky finish Karnataka. Iruppu water falls near kutta is worth a visit, a little bit trekking through brahmagiri wild life sanctuary will take you to this beautiful falls. From Iruppu drove straight towards madikeri. Need to find some good place to stay where I can keep my bike safe. Took some time to find it &
            settled for today.

              Day 3

Dubare Elephant camp - Golden temple - Malali Falls - Abbey Falls

Sight seeing day at coorg, first time i'm visiting this place finalized some places to visit in this short one day trip. First destination for the day was famous Dubare elephant camp Roughly 1/2 hour journey from madikeri, like y'day reached the place pretty much early and literally no one was there yet. Boat service to the island will only start by 9.00AM, shortly tourists started to came in. I wandered along the stream, the fog and rising sun made the view beautiful. River rafting is one of the main attractions here other than elephant camp. A small ride across the stream will take you to the camp. Elephants will be brought from the inside camp area to the visitors zone by the caretakers, where they will be engaged in different activities. Left the place quickly as it seems to be less interesting to me.

Bylakupp or Golden temple of coorg was my 2nd destination for the day. This was my best place among the entire trip, the ambiance of the monastery somehow influenced me in a bigger manner. It was indeed a new experience for me to see the colorful dressed monks and their rituals. The total place seems to be like a little Tibet to me.

Unexpected journey to unknown destination is risky & adventurous at the same time it usually turn out as memorable experience. On my way back from bylakupp i came across tourist information sign board showing waterfalls across coorg district. Randomly picked one destination "Malali falls|" a 45kms detour from the point where I was. A little over 1hr ride took me somewhere near to the falls, Still no visibility or presence what so ever. Guided by the locals i took right from main way to experience hardest ever off roading I have ever done. There was literally no road along the path, with loose soil filled uphill which terrified me a lot along with pure silence. There were sign of road construction activities along the way but no presence of humans. Almost after 3km ride reached a small check post to see fist human presence along the whole way. Saw 2 vehicles parked over towards the falls entrance gave me relief at the same time amazed with the thought of their drive experience. The ride was worth with a top view of water falls surrounded by hills. I dropped the plan to go near the landing of the falls as the up and down stair journey take nearly 2hr. One of the drivers told I have to climb up and down almost 700 steps from the top to reach the landing of falls.

Sun started to get down; one more destination needs to be covered. The Abbey waterfalls, one of the most visited place in Coorg. The gate was almost closed by the time I reached the falls. When they saw my bikes kerala number plates, they allowed to let me in to have a quick visit to the falls. To be continued…….

                        Day 4

Coorg - Agumbe- Jog Falls - Goa (625Kms)

Another long ride day has begun, i was up and ready by 6. Need to fill up the tank before heading out. Near the station spotted a place called 'Rajas Seat' where can catch glimpse of rising sun through the dense fog clearly. A very pleasant start for today's journey, the plan for today's trip was not fixed though. My intention was to ride as much as i could and reach a good spot before the dawn. Heard lot about the 'Capital of King cobras', i opted to take the agumbe ghats to reach Jog falls. As mentioned everywhere agumbe can be seen in its real beauty only when its rains hard. As i drove to agumbe i was expecting at least a small drizzle to make the climate bit colder than it was. Unfortunately there was none, except the scorching sun. By mid after noon i reached Jog Water falls, though less rain across the terrain drained the falls you can still feel the mighty rush once its flooded by the monsoon rains.

Looking at time it i decided to give it a try to reach Goa today itself. Made some quick calls to inform my old boss about my arrival with whom i'm going to stay with during my

time in Goa. I was always welcomed to his place which was indeed a great relief for me to find a spot for my stay. By 8 PM i ended my first ever longest motor cycle ride in one day (625Kms).

When i started planning for this trip i never thought i would reach here. There was always a plan B which i had in my mind, if not possible to continue further more parcel my bike back through train and catch one to reach home. Luckily by grace i completed my first leg of my journey safely and soundly. Now decided to plan about the remaining trip as i planned only upto this point. Now it s time for chit chat & good food.

                        Day 5

                        Goa Sightseeing

Finally i made up my mind, a big detour from my preplanned route. I decided to go upto Bangalore before heading back to kerala. It will give me a chance to catch up with my cousins with a real surprise. For the day i want to wander around the whole Goa, starting form my favorite Palolem Beach in the south to Calangute beach in North. I even went to my small old joint near below the zuari railway bridge where they serve Mouth watering Ros omelette too.
