    Prologue

It all started 3 months back when two of us (me and Saquib) were chatting over our late night coffee destination (CCD, Narasapura) about going somewhere far from Bangalore. And, this time the plan was to push our bikes to a 15 days plan and explore a state, if possible. Probable destinations that came to our mind was Rajasthan, Maharashtra or Gujarat. Argument started over coffee and the first two destinations got canceled (Rajasthan being too far for us to ride along from Bangalore and Maharashtra looks best during monsoon) and we were left with Gujarat. This was something which each one of us wanted to do, especially visit the Rann of Kutch and I very well knew that this time we are going there for sure as the planning started in full swing.

Although it was initially me and Saquib who kicked off with the planning and research off, we decided to pull in some close pals of ours who might be interested for this long roadtrip of ours. We decided to start for the trip on 31st January, 2014 (Saturday) and come back to Bangalore by 11th February, 2014 (Wednesday). So, here goes the group below:

    1. Saquib - his steed - R15 v2.0.
    2. Ashish - his chosen steed - Karizma ZMR.
    3. Sunil - his steed - Pulsar 200 NS
    4. Tapabrata - his steed - CBR 250 R
    5. My good friend, Eshwari. Incidentally, her plan was to visit Gujarat with her parents around the same time frame we were looking for to ride,, and when I discussed the plan with her, she was more than happy to extend her leaves and join our gang of riders. She rode the Thunderbird 350 during her presence with the group.
    6. Lastly, Me and my steed - Thunderbird 350.

So, all set with the group, and with all the research nearly complete, it was time to publish the plan. It was a bit difficult for some of us to get full 15 days leave from office, but nonetheless, everyone was able to manage at least 11 days. Below was the routemap which we came up with.

A total distance of 5200 Kms came up as per the google maps. It goes without saying that all of us were excited as hell! The days crossed by and our excitement meter was becoming unstable day by day. We were meeting at times, just to check if everything was on track, ran through the route map again and again so that everyone knows the route very well. Unfortunately, few days to the start of the ride, and we face two setbacks.

Setback 1: Sunil learned from his office that he has to be in his office on 31st January (half-day) and it can not be avoided. He hence would only be able to leave from Bangalore in the afternoon and hence would be able to meet us only at Ahmedabad on the 2nd day. We did not have any other option but to agree to this plan because chances were less that our leaves would get extended.

Setback 2: Saquib had a similar situation in his office but he was able to manage the same. However, his brother Sauban had to be operated on 29th of January (minor one though) which was actually postponed by the doctor in the last minute to 31st January. So, in no ways can Saquib start along with us, rather he has to actually postpone his plan to couple to days later and in that case, he will end up doing a solo trip. This came as a big blow to us because he was the person who was the mastermind behind this mega plan and all of us wanted him to be part of our group. With heavy heart, we accepted his decision and carried forward with our plan.

Teaser of what is to come:

I am hereby presenting some of the teaser pictures of our trip across Gujarat. What we experienced was just not a roadtrip, it was much more than that. We met wonderful people all along our way, ready to help at any point of time. It was an experience which no words can express.

                    Re: Gujarat Extravaganza

Thank you all for your lovely comments. Here goes the story of our journey. Do note that the Pictures taken on Day 1 are from my and Tapabrata's cameras.

                    Day 1 (31st January): Bangalore - Pune

So it was Me, Tapabrata and Ashish who were starting from Bangalore on this day and our target was to halt at Thane, at total distance of 983 Kms to be covered. We decided to start around 4 am in the morning to avoid all the early morning traffic on the way towards Tumkur, but nonetheless, we (Ashish and me) got delayed while preparing ourselves and by the time we could reach the meeting point, the Nelamangala toll booth, it was already 6 am. Tapabrata had just finished his morning tea and was waiting for me and Ashish, and his look said it all, that we are late. We checked our luggage one last time and kicked off our steeds to head towards Thane. Although, I told the rest that I might be stopping momentarily as the sun was almost on the horizon and i wanted a nice shot of our bikes with the sun rise.

Another few minutes into the chilly morning that I realized that I completely forgot the thermal liner on my jacket! There was no point of cursing yourself at that point so I chose to ignore that and continue. It goes without saying that I was getting shivers all along, but I had it running on my head that just a couple more hours and the chill will fade away. Amidst these thoughts, I started looking at my rear view mirror for the sun. Suddenly i saw the red fiery ball in the sky and I did not waste a minute but pulled over alongside the highway, the others following me as well. It was time to pull out my camera.

Once I was done, we started off again, next designated stop was at the outskirts of Chitradurga (our favorite wind mill sight), 150 kms from the place we took a break. I turned on the music in my ears and all three of us speed past the miles gradually. The mercury started rising and it was not the bone piercing chill, rather it was the mild cold wind around me. A perfect moment to be on the highway I believe! We already had decided before the ride that we would keep a constant speed of 100 kmph and that is what every one of us were doing. We were neither pushing too much, nor in a slow mode. Once you are on the road, you hardly get to know what time it is, and it always surprises you. By the time we reached the outskirts of Chitradurga, it was 8:30 am in the morning and we pulled over for some little butt break and to take some shots of the windmills with our bikes.

Wrapping up faster from there, we started feeling the hunger. Tapabrata reminded me of the restaurant after crossing Chitradurga where we had stopped during our ISG2G pre-ride and all 3 of us agreed to it. We started cruising through the city, eyeing out for the restaurant, but sadly, neither me or Ashish spotted it (although we came to know later that Tapabrata did spot it but by that time we two were way ahead of him so he did not stop us) and continued on our way towards Davangere. Few kms before Davangere we ended up seeing a roadside decent hotel and pulled over. We ordered some poori and coffee and started admiring our steeds parked outside the hotel.

Having a heavy breakfast, we continued on our way, next designated stop point to be Hubli (150 kms from Davangere). This stretch being arrow straight road, you tend to fall asleep, especially when your tummy is full. The cool breeze was still on around me and with some nice music on, I started to enjoy the ride now. There was almost no traffic on the highway which added to the feel good factor. We sped past the numerous villages, the farmlands, the water bodies. Please be advised that just 20 kms before you approach Hubli, you end up hitting two speed breakers. There are no sign boards that tell you that and the humps are sharp. We had a bad experience before so we were aware of them and handled the humps pretty well this time.

By the time we reached Hubli toll gate, it was past noon and we needed a break for sure. Hence, we pulled over just beside the toll, in a shade of trees to take some rest, and give our steeds some rest as well. I pulled out my camera this time as well.

Refreshing ourselves with some tea-coffee-cig, we continued on our way towards Nipani, our next designated stop (168 kms from Hubli). We were aiming to have lunch at Hotel Goa Ves, that comes just after Nipani, along the highway. We knew we had to push ourselves a bit now because we were already schedule and the hot temperature was now becoming a factor as well. Three of us split up and decided to meet each other at the Hotel Goa Ves. Tapabrata and Ashish sped past at their comfortable speeds from here on. Gradually, I crossed the twin city of Dharwad and then Belagam and headed towards our destination. After Belagam, I saw a sudden rise of traffic and to my discomfort, I had to overtake some slow cars and trucks along my way. By 3:30 pm, I reached Hotel Goa Ves and found the other two taking rest and already having ordered some food for me. We took a good 30-45 minutes rest there and let the adrenaline cool down a bit. It was then when we started to realize if targeting Thane would be too much a ride for a day taking into consideration that we do not have an accommodation pre-booked and it might be too late in the night that we reach Thane. After some discussion, it was decided to halt at Pune for the day.

Around 4:30 pm, we were on the highway again and soon we started tackling our bikes around the bad patches. Road conditions deteriorated once we crossed the Karnataka-Maharashtra border but this was something which we had expected before so we did not bother too much about it. We did stop at the border to take these pictures.

We were approaching Karad when we saw the sun on the horizon again. And with the increase in traffic now, we wanted a stop, both to refresh ourselves and to take some sunset shots.

It got dark in no time and we ran towards Pune now. The road now had lots of diversions and it was getting difficult for us to maintain a healthy pace throughout. However, all three of us were on a roll that evening, overtaking vehicles one by one, together. It must have been a sight for the others! Anyways, when we were at the outskirts of Pune, it was around 8 pm in the evening and we started looking for lodges along the highway. After few searches, we ended up at a decent enough lodge with an adjoining restaurant where we decided to bunk for the night. We got freshened up a bit, and rushed down to the restaurant to have some food. It was Tapabrata and his camera now to take some shots.

While serving us food, the waiter asked us out of curiosity where we are coming from and where we are headed. When we told him our plans he was like: "aaplog itna mehnat karke kyun jaa rahe ho bike pe, train le lete" (trans: why are you taking all the trouble and going on bike, you could have taken the train). We did not answer but smiled back at him. He must have thought three mad people have come over to his place. Anyways, we filled ourselves and our steed and crashed. We had to wake up early in the morning and head out towards Ahmedabad.

End of Day 1. Day 2 to start soon.
