Day 5: Samkhiyali - Bhuj - Kalo Dungar - India Bridge - White Desert

We woke up real early in the morning and started getting ready to hit the highway. The toilet was not at its best shape so all of us skipped taking bath and thus, by 6 am each one of us were ready. We finished off all the formalities of the guest house and hit the highway by 6:30 am. It was pretty darn cold, but we also wanted to reach Bhuj as soon as possible so the pricking cold was at the back of our minds. I was sitting as the pillion and keeping an eye on the GPS and noticed that we have to take the SH 42 from Bhachau, which I communicated to Eshwari, Ashish and Tapabrata (Sunil was no where to be seen, so we assumed he has headed forward). However, in moments later, Tapabrata was able to contact with him over phone and came to know that since Sunil has headed quite far from the Bhachau diversion, he will take the diversion from Anjar instead, and we would meet each other at the outskirts of Bhuj.

Once we took the SH 42, the road started off with lot of potholes, and at some places, there were some really deep ditches. Our speed came down considerably and with an increase of truck traffic, we became extra cautious. However, within a 15 kms, the road condition improved and it was again well laid tarmac, to which the traffic also decreased considerably. We resumed our normal speed and by the time we reached the outskirts of Bhuj, it was past 10 am. And then our quest for a search of guest house began. Though Bhuj had lot of options for stay, started from really bad quality guest houses to even 3-star, studded with foreigners, what we were looking for was a budget stay. After few searches, we finally ended up at Hotel Anjali. It looked pretty good, neat and clean and with the tariff well within our budget, we could not have asked for more. We decided to bunk there and started freshening up, getting ready to hit the next target of destinations. We had skipped breakfast earlier, so everyone except Sunil was super hungry (Sunil was having digestion problem), however, the only option we could see in front of us was to have lunch at a south indian restaurant. Everyone except Ashish was against having south indian lunch, but looking at the time crunch, Ashish was made happy.

By 1pm, all 5 of us headed towards the next set of destinations, i.e. Kalo Dungar, India Bridge and then white desert. Eshwari said even she wants a riding picture this time, so I became pillion with Ashish this time.













We started experiencing terrible wind blast going forward and it was really getting difficult to keep the bike on the road. We stopped over at the check post where we had to made passes for visiting the white rann. It was an easy formality and with less crowd at the counter, it did not take much time for us to complete it. In few moments, we continued on our way towards Kalo Dungar. I kept clicking pictures from my pillion seat though.











Kalo Dungar is the highest peak in the entire Kutch region and you get a spectacular view of the white rann from the top. We parked our bikes at one side and started walking towards the view point. Strong wind was gushing on our faces all along. The moment I saw the view of the rann, i seemed to me at the first moment if I am actually dreaming, or is it real! Ashish walked up to me at that very moment and said: "Can you believe we came this far?". I could not answer, it was the same feeling even I was having and what I wanted at that point of time was to enjoy the place. After few moments though, all the thoughts settled down and I pulled out my camera.











And it was time for some selfies and group pictures.





After spending some quality time at the view point, we came down to the parking area, drank some juice/lassi/water and we started getting ready. Some pictures clicked by Eshwari and Tapabrata in the meanwhile.







We continued from Kalo Dungar towards India Bridge in some moment's time. Road has been excellent all throughout the leg of the day and not even a single pothole was to be seen anywhere. We approached India Bridge around 4 pm, took some shots except the bridge (Photography of the India Bridge is prohibited by law), where Sunil went over to the jawans for some chat and in few moments, we made our way back. Our plan was to be present at the white desert (Dhordo) before sunset to get some good shots. However, when I looked at the watch, it seemed close to impossible for me and I started looking up for alternate options. Suddenly, a road caught my eye. There was a route going from Khavda to the left named as the Khavda-Jamkundaliya road and it was leading directly to the white rann.



It seemed doable for me, however, we had no clue how the road was and what we would see at the end of the road, but it was worth an attempt, instead of going to Dhordo and miss the sunset. I conveyed my plan to the rest of the group and they sounded ok with it. So, we did not waste any more time and headed towards Khavda from where we would be taking this small stretch of road.

I personally feel more comfortable wearing this helmet on long rides and trips, and this is a dual purpose helmet which actually is used in touring, worldwide and not the lightweight off road helmets like the ones which Vega manufactures. It remains stable and has more ear-room due to which plugging earphones is not an issue. On top of that i consider my ZMR as gareebo ka TIGER XC, so yeah that's another point for which i chose this helmet.

Mere ko bhi maangta aisa waala pic bilkul.
As for Aashish, I think he is in love with that helmet. Wears it everywhere.. .
