  • Of Dear Friends, Legends and Extempore Rides

It happened again! Yet another “conspiracy” evolved on our rooftop, the zone where most of our ride plans are hatched. It was a balmy Friday night; the winter was surely retreating and another summer just around the corner. No weekend plans except maybe relax and unwind at home. “Boooring”! The highways were silently nudging me our bike seemed to go “wink, wink”. Ah! “A ride would be great wouldn’t it”? I mentioned. Saw the glint in wifeys eye and knew a ride was on! Next, destination. Had to be a short ride since we had to back by Sunday afternoon. Pondicherry?? Naah, done many times. Yelagiri she said, done that too but we could meet Dr. Nandakumar at Krishnagiri on the way. Been wanting to meet him for a long time now. Messaged our dear friend Thulashi Dharan and mentioned our plan. He responded immediately that he would join us and when we knew that the legendary Dr.Nandakumar who at age 75 would make any youngster envious with his passion for motorcycling, we were thrilled, to put it mildly!

We planned to leave at least by 6am but as always the night before a ride with the adrenaline pumping sleep is often elusive. The Bangalore roads were already getting busy and we somehow manage to push through and head out on to the highway

Shortly we reach Krishnagiri and meet up with Thulashi and his new bride Pavithra on their Hero Impulse and ride together to meet Dr.Nandakumar waiting for us with shiny new Suzuki Gixxer.

Riding with the Doctor who has been touring for more than 50 years on more number of bikes than we can even imagine was truly an honor. As we follow him on the Krishnagiri/Chennai highway and watch his disciplined, controlled and skillful riding we hope to be able emulate him as long as we can.

Doctor has a regular pit stop enroute and we stop over for breakfast there. He was just back from the IBW at Goa and the discussion was all about motorcycles and more motorcycles! His love and passion for bikes can truly be contagious and when three bikers meet the conversation revolves around bikes and highways!

After breakfast we head out again and shortly reach the foothills of Yelagiri. Though it’s only a short climb, it still is a joy riding up as most hills are for bikersJ

We soon reach the top and ride up to the lake for lots of clicks to preserve the memories and then its goodbye to the Doctor, Thulashi and Pavithra who are riding back home while we planned to stay overnight.

    Dusk, Dawn & Overnight ...next

    Cheers & Ride Safe All

          Thanks a lot DS

After checking into our room and freshening up we have lunch and relax for a while. In the evening we ride out to explore a bit and were gifted with a spectacular sunset which kept our cameras busy for quite a while.

On the way we back we get to witness a beautiful village ceremony and get to chat with some of them for a while. Definitely one of the pleasures of touring is to meet simple people like them and get to watch their rituals.

Back to our rooms. A large group of youngsters have arrived by bus and we were amused by their games and dancing by the bonfire. Later they also retire and a silence sets in. The silence of the hills is truly different and we were reminded of our recent ride to Kodaikanal/Valparai/Anaimalai/Palani/Ooty. It surely has been a hilly tour of late for us it seems! Not complaining at all!!

The next morning was cool and misty and after some hot coffee, we ride out to watch the mist and feel the cool air only the hills can give us. We feel refreshed and rejuvenated and after breakfast gear up and start our return ride.

Extempore rides are great but then lots of things go unattended at home and tomorrow is Monday L . It’s been another enjoyable spur of the moment ride and when you meet up with good friends and legends it’s so much more specialJ

So keep riding guys & girls
