  • 2200km- 6 days -Life on ride, road and in rain!

Almost year since I made this. Posting here late.

From long time I wanted to do one mini south india ride covering all the costal and green routes... Especially in rain. So made out a plan to ride from Bangalore - chennai - pondi- rameshwaram - kanyakumari - Kochi- mangalore and bangalore. I had all the plan in place.. but just before a week, i was thinking myself, contemplating what i really want to see in my ride. I for the one who wants to go back to nature where it was untouched by man and also a guy who run away from crowd and city. Another one main reason is i do not want to ride in highways.. I would rather ride on a bumpy road of village than on a silk smooth road of highway.(Also i heard there is no rain in tamilnadu :P ) So scrapped my plan during the last one week and made out a new one. Thought ill cover all green routes, forests.

So the new plan was to go to Valparai - Athirapally-Munnar-Ooty-Wayanad-Coorg-Mangalore-Agumbe-Shimoga- Bangalore. As always Martin is the guy who has all these route details at the tip of his tongue, i called him up to ask suggestion on the plan. It was a planned solo ride till then. Martin had a tentative plan to ride with his colleagues and one of them dropped i guess. So he asked me if i want i can join them for the first three days as the destinations are same. Although i wanted to do the solo ride i was also little worried about pulling it off as i never did such long trip before alone. So i thought if i tag along i can do group ride for first three days and then the solo

Didn't have to do much homework as i was going to ride with 'walking gmap' (Martin ) so rest of the days started making list of things to carry.

    Things Carried:

    So the new plan was:

    Day 1 : (26-07-2014) (group ride)

Bangalore - Gopalaswami betta - Bandipur reserve forest - Ooty - Gudalur

    Day 2 : (27-07-2014) (group ride)

    Coimbatore-Pollachi-Udumalpet-Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary-Maraiyur-Kanthaloor-Munnar-Top Station (Munnar)-Vattavada

    Day 3 : (28-07-2014) (group ride)

    Vattavada-Kundala Dam-Mattupatty Dam-Munnar-Adimali-Kothamangalam-Perumbavoor-Athirapally Waterfalls-Sholayar Dam-Valparai

    Day 4 : (29-07-2014) (solo)

    Valparai-Pollachi-Coimbatore-Conoor-Ooty-Gudalur-Sulthan Batheri-Kalpetta

    Day 5 : (30-07-2014) (solo)

    Kalpetta-Wayanad-Tholpetty reserve forest-Gonikoppal-Madikeri-Abbey Falls-Sullia-Puttur-Home

    Day 6 : (31-07-2014) - home

    Day 7 : (01-08-2014) - home

    Day 8 : (02-08-2014) - home

    Day 9 : (03-08-2014) (solo)

        Day 4:
Everyone became close in last three days and it was the day i had to part away from them. Heart felt little heavy when i woke up on that day but the thrill of riding solo compensated that a bit. As i had to go wayanad through ooty, i was to ride to pollachi with them, have breakfast there and go seperate ways then. There was a awesome scenic route was waiting in that route. Valparai to Pollachi

        First the awesome green route

        Then the fog!

Stopped here for buy tea powder to home

        Amazing landscapes again

Tempting roads. Here i tried taking pics as i ride in one hand!

I do not recall this ghat name but this is the majestic one i have seen till today! Breathtaking!

        Spotted this animal here.

        Roads again!

We parted ways after having breakfast at Pollachi and I started to ride towards ooty and others towards Bangalore. I reached coimbatore in no time and then took the conoor road towards ooty as i have already covered kothagiri route while going.

Did not stop much anywhere but in ooty i saw a name board saying 'lovedale'! The name was interesting so i thought there might be something there. Something romantic and rode till the point! It turned out to be just railway station, came back clicking some pic. Later Canute told me that i could have taken the bike on railway track and John has done that before and its a good photo spot

From ooty i had to take Gudalur and roads were worst for that 20 or 30km stretch. Full of potholes and uneven roads. There is one incident hapnd which scared the shit outta me. It was the middle of the forest and there were almost no vehicle at all. Front part of my bike started making sound in that road and it was middle of a forest i had to make stop. Also there was a sign of heavy rain. When i stopped n saw it was my crashgaurd. All the bolts got loose n fallen somewhere n it was holding by only one!!! I have no clue how that happened.. Even the last bolt was about to fall n when i pulled the crash gaurd it came in my hand !! Had no option to put it back as i had lost all the bolts so just tied that gaurd to back of my luggage n started riding again.. Was scared for almost an hour that there might be more parts have got loose n i will get struck somewhere.. Luckily nothing happened after then.. Next day when i reach sullia i found one bajaj service centre n fixed it. If i carried that till home then surely my parents would have freaked out that i met with an accident.. Nobody would have believed it just got loose If you see next few pics you can see that gaurd tied back to my luggage

        After gudalur.

Reached Wayanad by evening 6 and stayed in a hotel called Affas. It was raining heavily outside, kept alarm for early morning and slipped into deep sleep.

        Day 5:
It was drizzling and felt so good to wakeup as I will be entering karnataka today and that too going home! Took cold bath as I had to wait for an hour before i get hot water. Packed everything and rode for almost 6 km and suddenly remembered i forgot my crashgaurd back at the hotel! came back again and tied it back to the luggage and started riding again. Morning cool breeze and heavenly weather! Kept asking people for route and ride towards tholpetty.

        Inside tholpetty forest

        Just like a foreign country!

This is where two deers jumped infront of the vehicle. Dint wait till i take the pic though.

Reached madikeri in an hour and it was raining heavily there too. This was my day. Rain all the way. Also the feel of home.

I think i need to seriously note the names of places. This is one other blunder which i did. I have recently visited madikeri just before one month with a group of friends and visisted abbey falls then. But that name was slipped of my mind long back. When i reached madikeri i saw signboard for abbey and just 5km :P Thought its just 5km and will visit that falls and see how it is. reached there in few mins and parked my vehicle and asked the guy who collecting parking fees to keep an eye on my bike and luggage. There is a five min walk from the road till that falls and as soon as i enter the walking path it seemed familair. Next thing i realised this is the falls i just visited a month back :P Was laughing at myself visited the falls, but it was worth it as there was more water this time!

If you climb down through a ghat from madikeri, its sullia. Awesome road and scenic route again.

From Sullia to Puttur although roads are almost nice and some places it all came off. But it wasnt that bad.

Saw a service centre near sullia and fixed my crashgaurd and started riding towards home. Reached home by 5. Mom was happy to see me

        At home sweet home!

        Day 6 coming soon!

        ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

        Day 6:

Roamed around at mangalore visiting all the relatives and stuff, got ready by sunday for the final day ride. It was raining cats and dogs for all the three days when at home. Literally did not get to see sun for three day's. I had to cross shimoga only then i could see the sun. It was kind of dark cloudy weather with rain most of the time. There was also flood near to my home.

        Flood water near home.

Slept early on the previous day, and decided to go early at 5.30 . Woke up silently and was getting ready thinking it would disturb their sleep. But still by the time i finished brushing teeth, mom was ready with tea!! Even dad woke up to check if i am carrying everything and dont miss out any. Started the journey after hearing my mom saying to take care for the millionth time

It was dark but did not started raining yet. Took this route.

        Bantwal - Karkala - Agumbe - Theerthahalli - Kuppalli - Theerthahalli - Shimoga - Bhadravathi - Arsikere - Tumkur - Bangalore

        Early morning near Bantwal

I did not notice it last time but as i did many forest route this time, it became obvious that this bantwal till karkala route is no less than any other forest route. more than i can call as forest route its a road of sexy curves and silky road. It was drizzling every now then so thought i will wear the rain inliner. Stopped also but then changed my mind. Today is the last rain ride and did not want to miss that feel. Removed the inliner and started riding the last day ride with rain!

Just as i enter Agumbe these roads welcomed me!

Petrol pump before it started agumbe ghat route. I had my breakfast there.

For the love of wet roads and feel of drenched nature.

The viewpoint. This is a sunset point and it was fully covered with fog in the early morning.

Nature was on my side that day

Reminded me of this quote " Everybody should be quiet near a little stream and listen"

These pictures were taken near some falls at agumbe(not able to recall the name). Thought i will visit there, but then i came back as one local warned me about the leeches :P i know nothing will happen even it bite, but that phobia has been grown since one trek to Kumaraparvatha

This doesnt really suit for the location as this place is still untouched my man( not yet ****ed up!)

Reached theerthahalli sometime later, thought i will visit Kuvempu's home. Although i could not read any of his novels but i did read few of his poems and he is most awarded poet of Karnataka after all. But actually i am fan of his son ( Poornachandra Tejaswi) as i read almost every book written by him.

Also the roads were heavenly and his place is more majestic! No wonder that place inspired the great poet inside him. The feel as i enter his home is inexpressible.

        About Kavishaila

        Home of Kuvempu

        route to Kavishaila

        About Kavishaila

        Kavishaila

And finally towards my favourite author

        The roads again

Not really flood water but clogged water from previous day rain

This one is flood water. It was on the roads previous day. I was watching about this in tv previous day about heavy rain and landslides in shimoga with mom and dad. But they did not know i was going to take this route

        Heavenly roads again

i forgot the name of the dam again. This one near Shimoga.

Straight roads then on towards bangalore. Did not stop for any other locations then on.

Ending notes with rain drops and my bike in the background. Although i complaint about my bike few of the times for the bad pickup ( ie the only complaint), this bike never broken down once! I crossed 30,000km in my last ride and its still almost as new. Only parts i change in every service is break shoes. Nothing else. More than that this bike kept me alive(by limiting my speed ofcourse). Not sure if i would have made this so far. My heart goes out for this poor machine soul.

The satisfaction of achieving the milestone of crossing 2000km made me strive for go for more. I always go by this quote from Mark Twain.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

@ridingsouls, awesome captures there! Nicely narrated as well.
BTW, after leaving Munnar, you said that the most majestic ghats was something whose name you forgot. Was it Valparai?
