Re: The Great Monsoon Ride - Half the country in 27 days
Day 3 - 6 Sambhalpur - Koenjhar - Baharagora - Kolkata - Shantiniketan - Bakkhali - 1300kms
Next day came as a big surprise to me. Although I knew that Orissa has many hidden destinations but the amounts of greenery and very good road infrastructure surprised me. The whole Orissa is very picturesque to ride but if I had pick a section then it would be the 40km ghat section before Kendujhar. The roads are very well laid, the amount of greenery with diverse fauna just amazes you, weather is very pleasant and some points from where the view is just fantastic.
One look at Orissa map and everyone will understand that Orissa is very green and National Park and wildlife Sanctuaries cover a major of them, Orissa stands 4th in Government of India list of states with largest area under forest cover. On the NH 6 you crosses Deogarh Forest Range, Budhabahal Range, Harichandanpur reserve and Simlipal. Although like Chhattisgarh there are hardly any decent food joints on the highway and one has to rely mostly on street foods
Before entering West Bengal there is a section of 30km which goes through Jharkhand and this is the section which is in complete mess. The well laid roads of Orissa will finish in between fields and everyone tries to make their own way through huge amount muck and slush. Just this 30km took close to 2 hours to cover. The road improves as soon as one enters Bengal and becomes 6lane within 50km from Jharkhand border. My stay was at Parikshit’s place a very close friend from xBhp.
My stay in Kolkata was for 3days and in between all my personal work made quick visit to Shantiniketan made famous by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, a beach named Bakkhali and river beds around Kalyani and Raichak.
Decided to take my bike in train to Chennai so as to save time and unnecessary stress on the body before the actual leg. Surprisingly my body was holding pretty well till now and infact I was feeling better after each day of my ride. Guess a biker’s body feels much better when its spends most of the time on a bike.
Superb roads just after Sambhalpur

Excellent roads continues through Deogarh Forest reserve

Just some off shoot route from NH6 near Deogarh. Quite a picturesque route, will do this in future

Somewhere in Ballam

Stopping by the Brahmani river

Riding through the beautiful ghat section on Koenjhar

And the view from there

You will find this random temple structure everywhere in Orissa beside the road

State of NH6 once you enter Jharkhand

6 lane greets you once you enter WB

Rural Bengal

At Shantiniketan

Imambara at Kalyani

River bed at Raichak. Used to visit this place a lot when I was a kid

On a boat ride near Kalyani

The red crabs at Bakkhali beach
