Re: Ride to Yercaud Hills !
Thank you for the approval Divya Bhai ! And sorry for the delay..
Prologue:
There are many souls on this planet who try to seek any sort of excuses or chances for riding, and im glad that i got acquainted to a few through xbhp. It was April and one must be quite aware of how the climate during that month would be here in Chennai. So naturally, our close knit group decided to ride off to somewhere to escape the heat. To answer the question-‘When?’ quite fortunately a public holiday (May 1st – Labour’s Day) right before a weekend was coming up, so it was fixed as a 3 day ride.
After much discussion, we finally zeroed in upon Yercaud Hills. The final headcount dropped to 3. Unfortunately, Ezhil couldn’t join us at the last moment. So it was Chris and myself for the ride.
The route which we planned to take:
“One of the great things about travel is that you find out how many good, kind people are there.”
-Edith Wharton
We were pretty much excited as we knew that we would be meeting a whole bunch of bikers along the way, as it was a long weekend. This excitement along with the general excitement which crops up the night before the ride didn’t let me sleep for a while :P
After managing to sleep for a couple of hours, had woken up instantly to the sound of the alarm @ 4.30am! Finished off my morning chores very briskly, and had called up Chris. He said he would be at the meeting point (KFC, Poonamallee, NH4) @ 5.30am sharp.
Did some last minute checks, bid goodbye to mom, mounted my trusty old backpack onto my trusty old steed, warmed him up a little bit while i wore on my riding gears, and was READY TO GO!
By the time i reached the meeting point, it was already 5.45am. Met Chris, who was there @ 5.30am, shared a few talks. While we were getting on our gloves, we saw some bikers whizz past us, exchanged glances. Jackets, gloves, knee guards, and luggage – we ensured everything fastened and secured. Chris and I bumped our fists and we finally kicked our stands up and started our ride @ 6am.
We were doing pretty good speeds, negotiating the morning traffic with a breeze. It was absolute bliss to be back on the saddle again and opening it up out on the highway, but tackling certain rough patches for a certain stretch on the NH4 was a little irritating.
After covering up some kilometres, Chris had slowed down ahead of me. He then signalled me to pull over to the side of the road. It seemed that his right mirror had loosened up and was rotating freely. Unfortunately, we didn’t have that particular size of spanner (size 14) to tighten the loosened nut in place. So we rode in search of any shops along the highway, but it was too early for the shops to be open. We stopped at a fuel pump, and decided to ask for help. The owner came up to us and gladly provided the specified tool. We got it fixed, thanked him, and continued our journey.
While riding, we came across a guy riding a black CBR 250R, fully geared and a backpack strapped onto his rear seat. It was fitted with a free flow exhaust kit (not the local ones), which was sweet sounding! He was also cruising more or less at the same speed, so we started to ride together, following the riding etiquette and hand signals. It was an awesome feeling!
After crossing the Ranipet Toll Plaza, the guy signalled for a halt. He came up and introduced himself as Chetan
En route, we had also met and exchanged pleasantries with our fellow xBHPians, Sriram, Ananth, Venky, Kotty, and Sriram Shankar, who were heading off to Kodagu.
After riding under the hot sun, and few boring stretches of arrow-straight highway, we finally reached the foothills of Yercaud. After having tea, I had called up the manager of our stay and she informed me on how to reach the resort. We then started our ascent into the Shevaroyan Hills, tackling the 20 odd hairpin bends, with joy!
