  • Living the dream : Making it to the top !!

Prateek, kahin chalte hai!!” This is what I blurted out while we were listening to some instrumental song at our hostel room in month of Feb 2010.

AND THIS IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED!!

My love affair with the biking started when I rode unicorn (Will be referred to as UNI hence forward) in 2007 (No one can make engines like HONDA. Period) Fast forward to Dec 2008, and I got a Honda Stunner (Saphira aka Saph) as a gift from my parents. And Boy, I did ride her day and night to Amritsar, Jammu, Chandigarh, Karnal, Kurukshetra etc within a year.

But there was always an itch, of pushing myself to the max, bonding with the machine to become one and to make it to the top.

And that opening sentence gave way to that dream.

Dream of riding in unknown and challenging terrain.

Dream of absorbing the sun, the peaks, the lake, the nature and the peace.

Dream of exploring and meeting new creatures.

Dream of finding my inner self.

    To be cont.

          The Seed

We communicated this to our fellow riders and told them that we are going to Leh. And with that started months of sleepless nights, tons of discussion, reading up forums for the route and the preparation tips. During this time I contacted a person through public forums and he provided us with the maps which I have attached.

There were a total of 6 riders and hence we thought of taking 2 bikes solo and 2 with pillion. The rides decided were :

          Honda stunner ( Saph)
          Unicorn (Uni)
          Apache 150 (Jia)
          FZ-16

And mind you this trip was not yet communicated at home by any of us.

After I had all the information at my hand. I started the most important part : budgeting. :r::r:

After reading many travellogues I made a rough calculation and asked everyone to pitch in 10k. (hence a total of 60k.) All agreed to this and hence this matter was put to rest for now.

The excitement was so much that even during the final semester exams I and prateek used to take a 10 minutes break after every 15 minutes of study to discuss about our forthcoming trip.

We used to dance and clap and grin like a small boy who gets his first hotwheels car.

So on 2nd of july exams got over. And we came back to delhi to break this newsflash to our family.

Let me post the exact conversation :

Me : Mum-dad I wanted to tell you something.

Mum (Watching TV) : Kya hua ?? (what happened )

Me : Nothing much. Was just thinking that I am already placed and my joining date is far off so I should do something. ( This is the buttering phase where you coax the parents that you deserve something big after so much toiling (masti) at the college for 4 years )

Mum : Hmm. You are right !! you should join some course so that you are prepared when you join the company.

          I was like .

Meanwhile Dad and I exchanged a glimpse and he gave a small grin as he understood I was going to ask for something else. ( He knows about my passion for biking and understands me better in such circumstances )

Me : Yes you are right and I should do that but those courses start sometime later and I was thinking of something else. (Damage repair phaseContainment phase : Where you have given a hint to the parents and then have receded back so that parents have this thing at the back of their mind and when I will tell them about my plan they wont be taken aback. Think of this is preparation phase for newsflash)

          After couple of days :

Me : Mumma, You remember I told you that I was planning for something.

Mum : Yes. I do. So you must be planning a bike ride to Ambala again ?? (I had been to my college on my bike couple of times and she knew how much I love it. Hence the remark)

          (Successful execution of containment phase:twisted

Me : Yes Yes. I wanted to ride there but this time just a bit further.

Dad : Chandigarh Jana hai ??

Me : Hanji. Bas thoda sa aage aur hai. (Just a bit more furtherTell me where you want to go)

Me : LADAKH ( Fingers crossed at the back ) ( YOU ARE NOT GOING ANYWHERE ON BIKE.
          Wooaaah !! Mission Accomplished.

Called Prateek and others and told them about my green signal from home. Asked about their status and everyone said the work is in progress.

Dozed off to bed thinking of smooth tarmac, curvy roads, peaks, cool air and all. Little did I know that I would have to face the following too :

                The preparation

Well after the official clearances from my home I got 10k for the expenses. Called up prateek and told him that we have initial amount for buying essential things.
Reached Karol bagh market and then hunted for riding gears. At last found a shop within our budget and bought following :

                1. Knee pads & elbow pads : 6 nos. @ 450 each.
                2. Bunjee cords : 6 nos. @ 60 each.
                3. We looked for riding glassesRain coats cum pants : 6 nos. @ 400 each.
                2. Socks : 20 pairs @ 20 each.

And you know how much efforts are spent at pallika bazar. No no, I am not talking about the traffic, but about the bargaining. You get a quote of 1600 and you have to drag it to 400 and it takes multiple visit to same shop, making faces, haggling and what not.

Mind you : Pallika bazar is not for faint hearted persons

Then came another shocker : The FZ which was earlier planned got cancelledClick image for larger version

We came back at flat and started packing things.

Finally Rishabh arrived and he did arrive in style on his own bike which we never considered for this trip. Any guesses which bike he got for the ride ??

                Anyone ??

                Cm'on ??

                Not yet ??

                Yes a SPLENDOR !!

We were dejected, excited, happy, perplexed and content all at a single moment and reasons for such a mix of emotions were obvious. Atlast we got a bike but a bike which is at the lowest level of the food chain.

While we were thinking that pushing our 125 - 150 ccs bike to such terrain would be difficult we dared not to think what lie ahead with this.

The fact that the bike was serviced couple of days ago relieved our nerves to some extent.

And we named her "Mini Bult"

It has been close to 4 years so i am pestering my friends for any thing that they can remember. Once I am sure about all the things I pen down the next chapter. This weekend is relatively free so hoping to jot down atleast couple of chapters.
