  • [Photo Feature]: Touring Spree: Kodachadri and Chikmagalur

After abstaining from road trips for over a year, I have decided to traverse as much of Southern India that I can. My last road trip to Ooty in July taught me my limits; What I can do and what I can't. This time, I wanted to ride to a place where I can test my bike's potential. Places like Meghamalai, Valparai and Munnar seemed too mainstream. When my aunt's family was in Bhadravathi, we have toured Karnataka intensely and that nostalgia helped me in finalizing my destination.

Having heard about Kodachadri's charm during monsoon, I wanted to give it a try. However, I wasn't really comfortable camping in Karnataka. For an avid traveler that I am, camping took me a tad close to nature where I can sit or sleep inside my tent while gazing at the galaxy. This made me consider Vagamon and a few other places where I would be comfortable camping. Later, I chucked the idea of camping and started searching for hotels online. Having three days for the road-trip, I decided to ride through Chikmagalur so that I can spend all three days riding through serene landscapes. Started packing a day before the trip and scrutinized the bike's condition a week prior. As always, the week before the trip felt lackluster and the day before the trip was vivacious than the actual trip itself. On Friday, October the 2nd, I started at 6.30 from Chennai and decided to take the NH4 for a change.

I have ridden through this route once before, which happened to be a bitter pill. I was riding my Unicorn and hit a crater which broke the clamps holding the headlamp mask. Thinking about this, I was skeptical in taking this route again but decided to give it a go since I had a lot of time in the daylight to reach my destination for the day 1, Shimoga. As I approached the first toll near Sriperambadur, I saw a long queue of cars, buses and trucks honking notoriously. Squeezed my way through some 16-wheeled monsters and continued onwards. Soon after crossing Walaja, took the right towards Kolar on NH4. Sparing a few major junctions in the outskirts of some small town, the road was clear of traffic and the ride was pleasant. Stopped somewhere in between to take a leak and got back on the saddle to enjoy the ride through lush fields. This route is more engaging and interesting for quarter liter motorcycles as you can ride at a comfortable pace while carving some beautiful corners.

Upon reaching Chittoor, the weather became hotter and my stomach was starting to grumble in hunger. Right about time, spotted a Cafe Coffee Day and stopped there for breakfast. Ordered a cappuccino and sandwich and devoured it slowly only to realize that I had spent a little more than an hour.

I knew that the roads were going to get better and wider as I near Kolar and decided to tank up on this highway. As soon as I hit the 6-lane highways, wide opened the throttle and was cruising at 115-125 with ease(Thanks to the windscreen). Stopped at an HP bunk to tank up and update my locus to Dad and friends. The weather was cloudy and I was praying(for obvious reasons) that it doesn't rain until I cross Banglore. I relied on Google maps to navigate through the Outer Ring Road to Tumkur road, but it screwed up things. It took me through some worst stretches and made me take some unwanted U-turns and diversions. Finally, after battling the metro traffic, I was on the Tumkur Highway. Even in the afternoon this Highway was filled with cars and to make things worse, there was an accident which caused a traffic jam on the highways. Luckily there was a little passage for the bikes to pass.

Karnataka is a state that is obsessed with speed breakers. The road, connecting the NH4 to Tumkur is already in a bad shape and the speed breakers laid every 10 meters on this stretch made me grumpy. By the time I got on the Banglore-Honavar road, it was afternoon and I stopped at a small Dhaba for lunch. After the lunch, I decided to ride non-stop to make it to Shimoga before dusk. The roads were in good shape and I was constantly cruising at 90-100 on this stretch. Stopped at Tumkur to tank up and continued onward to Shimoga.

Took a few snaps on the go using the GoPro and soon after crossing Tiptur, it started raining. It was pouring heavily and the visibility was too poor even in daylight. Was riding at crawling speed for a few km's and the rain gradually changed to a mild drizzle. The wet trees to the side of the road made the route scenic. Took the right before Bhadravathi and continued towards Shimoga. By this time, it stopped raining and the daylight started fading. Reached Shimoga at 18.30 and navigated the way to the Jewel Rock hotel which I booked online. This time, though luckily, Google Maps didn't mislead me and took me to the place in the shortest route possible. Parked the bike, unloaded the saddle and tank bags, checked in and hit the sack for the day.

I think google has taken you to the TC(Tambu Chetty palya road) to take to outer ring. That's very bad stretch with humps.

Yes - the Old Madras road (Chennai-Walaja-Chittor-Kolar-Bangalore) route is quite good. You are 'engaged' in the bike on a road like this.

The second day was quite eventful with some unexpected trails and challenges. I planned to get rolling at 6 and eventually started at 6.30. The bike still had half tank of fuel left so I didn't bother to hunt for a petrol pump in the morning. Set the GPS to Kodachadri and was enjoying the wide empty road towards Sagar. The route was serene and the road was smooth, dark and shining in orange rays at dawn. Stopped at random places for clicking pictures and was having a relaxed ride.

Down the road, found a sign board showing 65KMs to Jog falls. Immediately I pulled over to the side and thought for a while. Set Jog falls as the destination in GPS and gunned the bike from there. Stopped at a fuel pump in a small village. People here were too curious about the GoPro and even jumped holding my shoulders to take a closer look. Had a small conversation with them about the road conditions and started my ride again. The roads were in good shape and the route had a long stretch, tight curves and winding roads which were very engaging for a biker that I am. Later, from a few km's before Jog falls the roads became a bit patchy to worse as I neared the falls. Took the left towards the falls, crossed the breath-taking view from the bridge and was stuck behind a tempo. The road was narrow and I had no space to overtake. Without any option, was riding behind the tempo for a few minutes before a girl jutted her head through the window and barfed. The very next nanosecond, I jammed the breaks and came to a halt. I let the van go and stopped there for a minute before resuming again. After riding over some giant pot holes, reached the entrance and stopped at the parking. Went to the ATM to top up some cash and walked down to the view point where the place was infested with tourists taking selfies. I was standing there like an alien with the jacket, riding pants, boots and camera bag. I was losing my comfort soon so clicked a few snaps and left the place. As I was mounting the camera bag back on the tank, a guy came and asked if I speak Tamil. Replied him in Tamil and he told that they(the guy and his friends) were following me from Chennai and even stayed in the same hotel where I stayed. We spoke for a while about our itinerary and departed with a smile. As soon as I climbed the saddle another guy came and started asking questions about the GoPro. Promptly answered his questions and finally left the place.

There was no network coverage there so I couldn't setup the navigation to Kodachadri. Decided to ride back to Sagar, hoping for a network range and breakfast joint. Reached Sagar and turned on the navigation to Kodachadri. Unfortunately, all shops were closed due to some local bandh and I had to skip the breakfast for the day. Followed the Gmaps and rode through some narrow roads that took me a deserted river bed. There were two ferries in my vicinity and as I approached an abandoned ferry, found another one starting from the dock. By the time I took a turn and climbed back on the main road, it was too late to catch that ferry. I had to wait there for ~40 minutes before it returned. In the meanwhile, took out my Nikon and clicked a few random shots. As soon as the ferry returned, I was the first one to get on it. I was so excited since it was the first time I sailed in a ferry. Enjoyed the serene location around and it was fun watching the pick-up vans and mini-lorries struggling to climb the ramp to the ferry.

After a super-slow ride reached the shore and started riding to Kodachadri. Initially, what I expected was a slushy route with a lot of muck. However, what I experienced was different. The route till the check-post was pretty easy and I expected the entire route to be the same way. At the check-post, I was asked if I had a tent and was informed that tents were not allowed beyond the check post. My whole plan was to tent somewhere and spend the afternoon at the hilltop and this was a bummer to me. Having no other option, I left the tent at the check post and started riding uphill. The terrain was getting tougher and had to climb over small rocks. The Michelin tires which my bike has is unworthy when it comes to off-roading. The bike was fishtailing and was sliding everywhere. I should admit, that this was my toughest off-road trail. The saddle bag and tank bag was only making things much more challenging. I stalled the bike around 8 times and even dropped it once.

Gradually, I learned that the key is not to come to a halt and lean to the side where I can easily anchor my leg. It was tough to lift the bike on a slope that too with a saddle bag fastened to it. After lifting up the bike, I started again and surprisingly felt more confident than before. Dodged some huge rocks and finally saw some lush greenery. I thought the challenging terrain has come to an end and expected a smooth ride onwards. Clicked a few snaps and rode towards the hilltop.

The terrain was no different than it was all the way till. In fact, a few turns were much worse than before. Rode for some 15 minutes and reached the hilltop where I parked the bike and took a breather. Went to the shop owned by the temple priest and had two glasses of soda. I didn't bother to trek to the top and decided to return. Found a steep jeep trail to the top somewhere in between and thought of giving it a try. After a few meters, the view I saw was stunning. Sat there for a while and was lost in the serenity.

Spent some 30 minutes there doing nothing and got back on the bike to ride downhill. The ride downhill was exhilarating and took a toll on my shoulders. That was an alarm to hit the gym and start my fitness training again. Reached the check post and collected my tent and left to Chikmagalur. Again, there was no network coverage for using the Gmaps but with some basic navigation skills, I was riding towards Thirtahalli. As I was riding, saw a person on a bus stop talking over the phone. Realized that there was some network coverage in that area and took my phone to turn on the navigation. It guided me through a narrow road which was indicated as a state highway. The road was hardly 4 feet wide and extremely bumpy. I was extremely frustrated and continued riding hoping for some good roads. After riding for 2 hours on that road, checked the GPS to see the distance covered and I was shocked to see that I had covered only 60kms in the last two hours. By this time, it was already 5'o clock in the evening. The fuel bars were also disappearing quickly and had only 50 km to empty.

Reached Thirtahalli and stopped at a petrol bunk for filling up. Enquired the bunk guy about the road conditions and his reply was promising. Updated my whereabouts to family and started to Chikmagalur. The roads were decent and without realizing I was pushing my limits in each and every corner. I was doing an average of 85kms which is definitely fast on these roads. By the time, I crossed a village called Balehonnur, it started drizzling and was getting dark. I don't prefer riding after twilight, let alone riding in ghat roads in the dark when it rains. To make things worse, every vehicle coming in the opposite direction had their high beams on. I was riding cautiously as there were some huge potholes within every two kilometers. The bright high beams were sickening and I decided to trail behind a van to avoid the fatigue. Rode for almost 15 kilometers behind the van after which, the driver showed my hand signs to overtake. As I gained some energy by this time, overtook the van and rode onwards to Chikmagalur. The last few km before Chikmagalur was good and I finally reached the hotel at 7.30. Took a hot shower and had a sumptuous non-veg meal after being famished the whole day.

                    Great log there. Nice narration.

Last weekend(a Day before yesterday 31st Oct to 1st Nov) I had been there.

The off road trial is one hell of an experience but feels great after the serene view. Below are a couple of pics.
