HOW TO VISIT TSO LHAMO LAKE ?

Tso Lhamo Lake is highest lake of India at 17400 feet, but permission is NOT given at Gangtok or Mangan to visit this. People say that it is impossible to get permission to visit Tso Lhamo. You are given permit to visit up to Gurudongmar Lake only. But only going ahead by 8 km you can reach Tso Lhamo Lake.

To get little more details about the area, you have to look at this Google map picture.

The straight road ahead of diversion of Gurudongmar Lake goes to Kerang Military area, but a right side road before military area goes towards Dongkha La via Tso Lhamo Lake.
Since new road construction is going on between Gurudongmar Lake bifurcation towards military area and also towards Dongkha La via Tso Lhamo Lake, the check post of army is not there at present. So nobody is there to check you or stop you. There are many construction vehicles and constructions workers around.

So the idea is you get the Permission for Gurudongmar and then visit Tso Lhamo also. But be careful not to go towards Kerang military area as shown in google picture above. Ride towards Tso Lhamo before military area on right side road only.
You can also see Dongkha La from far.
Riding just 8 km will take you to a different world of peace and a special but restricted place of India.

Now coming back to my ride….

Riding ahead the good tar road ended and there were two roads. One was old road and another new road was under construction. Many construction workers were there.

Further zooming I could see a different looking mountain from there. I could see a road on it also.

Riding ahead I saw the Kerang military area and I took the right road before that. I was riding fast on that under construction off road fearing that somebody will stop me.
At 9.50 am saw this rare n restricted beauty.

And the road ahead further was going towards a mountain pass.

I could see some yaks grazing on other side of the lake.

We found a small off road going towards lake and went there.

    View towards left side.

I could see prayer flags on Tso Lhamo Lake’s bank. This means people have come there and offered prayers in past.

If one Indian has visited this place & offered prayer flags, then why can’t another Indian visit the same place? I don’t understand this. If you are having contacts in army or with politicians they you can visit restricted place otherwise not. It is said that our constitution gives equality for all, but is this followed practically?

Anyways I was lucky enough to visit this highest lake of India at 17400 feet.

Now I could understand all the four signals which God gave me.
    1) First I saw the truck with construction workers.
    2) Secondly the info board at Gurudongmar Lake mentioned that this Sacred Lake is said to have divine powers to fulfill the wishes of devotees who visit the Lake.
    3) Thirdly my bike did not start while coming back from Gurudongmar Lake and then again starting after changing by back away from Gurudwara.
    4) Fourthly I saw a biker going towards Tso Lhamo Lake side and his bike also did not start till I talked with him.

So by the Grace and Wish of God all these things happened and He made me visit Tso Lhamo. All these things came to my mind and I started crying at the banks of Tso Lhamo Lake. This was very emotional moment for me. I thanked God & those four riders from the bottom of my heart. They were like Messenger of God to me.

It was an achievement for me. It was a big day today. I could visit both highest and second highest lakes of India on same day. I had already visited Suraj Tal of Ladakh, which is third highest Lake of India at 16000 feet.
I was very happy and delighted by this surprise of God.

Those riders were doing prayers and hoisting/putting flags on the banks.

And yes let me introduce them also.
The first kind rider who met me near Gurudongmar is Mr. Parik Ghising.

And three kind riders were Mr.Karma Tenzing, Mr. Anand Banerjee and Mr. Avimanyu Banerjee. I am mentioning word kind because they were kind enough to take me with them. Long live biker brother hood.

Colorful prayer flags at the banks of the Lake.

    Some differently shaped mountains nearby.

Karma Tenzing told me that these hanging/hoisting of prayer flags there was very important as Tso Lhamo Lake is the holiest lake of Sikkim.

He also asked me to join for prayer flags hoisting. You can also see the band aid on my left palm …courtesy Sandakphu fall.

Other riders also joined in flag hoisting. Prayer flags are also called Lung dhar.
Prayer flags are hoisted for happiness, long life, prosperity, luck and merit. The ancient Buddhist prayers, mantras and powerful symbols are displayed on the prayer flags produce a spiritual vibration that is activated and carried y the wind across.

These prayer flags have all five basis energy elements…..earth, water, fire, air and space.
Yellow = Earth, Green = Water, Red = Fire, White = Air & Blue = space.
This is Mr.Karma Tenzing with those elementary flags.

Some scenic beauty around that area.

And our five bikes parked there.

And another view of pristine lake along with Dongkha La Pass.

So in this trip I could see the 5th highest mountain pass of the world…Dongkha La, which is at 18000 feet above sea level.

India’s Highest Lake …. Tso Lhamo Lake at 17400 feet above sea level.

And could meet great riders and who became my friends.

By the way that man on left side with golden boot is a nomad who was gazing those yaks.

It was 10.20am and it was time to leave so that I can reach back at last check post before 12pm. These four riders went to see Gurudongmar Lake and I went riding back to army check post. I reached there at 11.05 am. I could not find Harsh there, he must have gone to Thangu as I went to Tso Lhamo Lake

The water bottle with Gurudongmar lake holy water fell down once in the off road towards Thangu. But I could notice it and bring it to Thangu. I reached at Thangu and Harsh was ready with luggage tied up on bike. We paid room rent of Rs.600 and food charges extra to the old couple.

Weather was foggy and we could sense rain falling in some time. Harsh started early and then I packed my luggage and rode around half hour late than him towards Mangan.

I took picture of that water crossing between Thangu and Lachen. After that it started raining slowly so camera was kept inside main bag.

In Chungthang, I met with Mr. Tega at 4pm. Cyclist Manish Lakhani introduced him to me and gave me his number. I had a talk with him before start of trip. So I decided to meet him on my way back at Chungthang.

He told me that while going towards North Sikkim, we should take permit from Mangan. You can get it in 2 hours. While it takes 2 days in Gangtok.

While riding further towards Mangan it started raining slowly. I showed my permit papers again on way down at Toong/Tung check post. Harsh had told here that another rider is carrying papers and he was allowed to pass from here. I requested Tung check post officer to give back original permit paper to me as momento and take photo copy instead and he agreed.
I had to ride very slowly in the land slide area as due to rain it was very slippery. I reached Mangan at 6pm. Harsh had already checked in the same Guddu’s Lodge. We had dinner at same old hotel. We had come down again to 4200 feet. Harsh was also feeling ok now.
We also took bath in hot water at hotel. We went to sleep early as we had to reach 3rd mile check post of Gangtok before 9.30 am tomorrow.

This was my ride map for the day.

                        18. Day 16 = 11th Oct., 2015

                        Mangan to Gangtok.

Total km traveled 76. Ride time 7.00 am to 10.30 am.
We rode to 3rd Mile Check Post, Gangtok…but due to permit issue stayed at Gangtok.

Click HERE = & Pressto listen to soothing music in background

Our plan was to get permit from 3rd Mile Check Post near Hanuman Tok, Gangtok on the basis of letter of Home Department as early as possible. We started at 7.00am from Mangan. We filled up our petrol tank at petrol pump of Mangan.

We wanted to cover Tsangu Lake, Nathula etc and night stay at Nathang Valley.

After Mangan there are two roads to reach Gangtok, one is via Dikchu and another via Phodong. We went via Phodong route.
At 7.50 am we reached reach here after taking breakfast.

The route is very scenic one and here are some pictures taken on the way to Gangtok.

It was morning time and the road was almost empty.

Saw some prayer flags on the way.

Morning time has its own beauty and same pictures clicked on morning and afternoon will have different effect.

Sky was clear with some thick clouds.

Some more prayer flags on the way.

We crossed some small waterfall also.

At 10 am we reach 3rd Mile Check Post and went to Police Counter downstairs, but it was empty! On inquiry we found that as it was Sunday, they give Restricted Area Permit only at M.G.Road. But this was not told to us on 8th October when we were there. We had also told them about our return plan, but they said that Restricted Area Permit will be given on day of travel only.
We went riding down to M.G.Road office but it was also closed as they keep it open up to 9.30am only on Sundays. We went to Sadar Police Station and requested to give us Permit so that we can ride to Nathula.
We knew that on Monday permit to Nathula is not given. We moved here and there and met many officers but nobody could help. We also met the two officers at M.G.Road office, who were in charge for that, but they were not in mood to cooperate. We told him about Nathula issue, but they said they will give us permit for Nathula even on Monday.
But only on next day we found that they lied to us about Nathula and did not gave us proper papers to visit Nathula.
We both were sad and at 11.30 am we went to Himakshi Lodge and took a room for Rs. 400. We decided to come again on tomorrow at M.G.Road office and another day of our ride was wasted.
The red tapism structure of Gangtok Government and Police Department does not support smoothness to tourist. It should have a one window clearance system.

After keeping our luggage we went to DPH Road to get some issue fixed for Harsh’s RE Thunder Bird.

After that we went to have lunch and at 1.55pm it started raining.

We came back to hotel and took some rest. It was raining till 4pm.
In the evening we just roamed here and there till dinner.

This was my ride map for the day.

                              Gangtok to Lungthung.

Total km traveled 101. Ride time 7.15 am to 4.00 pm.
We rode to Lungthung passing by Manju Lake, Tsangu Lake, Elephant Lake, World’s Highest Golf Course at Kupup, Harbhajan Baba Bunker, Nathang Valley & Thambi View Point.

After getting ready at 7.15am we reached M.G. Road office of Police Check Post for getting our Restricted Area Permit. The same officer who denied us Permit yesterday was sitting at the counter. He immediately gave us Permit paper after taking official charges. We reminded him that we will visit Nathula first then move towards Zuluk.
He gave us this Permit paper.

(picture of Permit is taken after finish of ride)

We made sure that Nathula was written on it as it was Monday and visit to Nathula is not allowed on Mondays. We also asked him that this is final papers? And we did few photocopies of it.

Then after having breakfast we started towards 3rd mile check post. Showed them our permit papers and gave one photocopy and they stamped on original.

At 9.00 am took a short break and took this picture of road which is called Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

The road was very good one with very less traffic.

Riding ahead saw this board of BRO, which was very inspiring.

At 9.35 am we reached Tsomgo Lake at 12300 feet.

It was morning time and there were no tourists around.

It was a cloudy day with lots of cloud around lake area.

An info board was there showing important tourist information.

There is a under construction rope way.

There was a big yak waiting for tourists. I click a picture with it.

This Yak was decorated to attract tourists for a joy ride.

That’s me with Tsomgo or Changu Lake in background.

                              The calm lake.

There is view point on opposite side.

Bikes from Odisha posing with big tourist board near lake.

Riding ahead, I reached a point where Tsomgo Lake was looking different from little height.

In sunlight these lake should look blue but due to clouds and fog around it was looking calm and less blue.

I request Bro personnel there to click a picture of mine there.

At 10.10 am took a break near this info board showing Nathula still 7km ahead.

In another few minutes reached a small lake called Manju Lake at 13615 feet.
                              Nathula still shows 7.5km ahead!

I reached Sherathang. I saw a building for acclimatization of Kailash Mansarovar Yatris at 13500 feet.

Sherathang is a town near Nathula Pass & it is site for excise, Customs and checking trade between India and China. Same way corresponding location in China is Ringingang.

View of Manju Lake is good after passing Sherathang.

It seems like a man made lake.

An info board of Sherathang market, Indo-China Trade Centre.

Then I reached check post towards Nathula. Harsh was already waiting there. We showed them our Restricted Area Permit with Nathula clearly written there.
But to our surprise they said that this is NOT the Nathula Permit. For visiting Nathula there is different form of Permit. We were shocked!
We argued showing our permit and Home Department letter, both mentioned word Nathula clearly.

Check post officer told us that we missed a check post near Sherathang. We can try permit for Nathula there. I rode back 6 km again and reached the Check Post. They informed me that M.G. Road Check Post had not given us complete permit.
For Nathula a different permit letter is issued which was not given to us.
I was shocked with this bad intention of police offer who issued us permit.
Another example how Police Department of Sikkim, harasses tourists specially bikers.

After wasting some time in trying for Nathula Permit, I decided to leave for Zuluk and visit Nathula next time. This is the board which was there opposite that check post.

At 11.15am riding near this sign board showing Chinese were observing this road.

On the way I saw many military area and they were practicing guns and rocket launchers near road. But they told not to click it.

The road with lots of cloud and mist on sky.

Then riding towards Baba Dham temple, I saw a big lake on right side. This is Hangu Lake.

At first I thought it to be Menmecho Lake, but it was not.

The road besides that Hangu Lake.

Then I passed near Sherthang war memorial

At 11.25am I reach Baba Harbhajan Singh Shrine at 12651 feet.

The area was crowded with tourists with lots of vehicle parked there.

The board showing history of this shrine.

This is main temple with statue of Baba Harbhajan Singh.

I was not sure about the availability of food ahead, so I ate heavy food like samosha etc there with hot coffee.

Riding ahead towards Kupup, I saw a lake on my right. It was Menmecho Lake which is famous for trout fish.

                              The road behind.
