The idea of this trip was to get some attention from new riders. As 90 %of the route is on NH5 only, which are in good condition. But we end up riding with old pals only.

Vineet and Sambit decided to join us till Gopalpur beach for breakfast, which is like 200km from Bhubaneswar.

We decided to have breakfast in Hotel Sea pearl. We reached the hotel at 7am and found out that kitchen will start working at 9am only. Even the street shops were yet to open. Luckily a small shop, adjacent to the hotel, heard our talks and opens their kitchen for us.

Bheemunipatnam - Local legend claims that the town was established during the days of the Hindu Epic, Mahabharatha, and was named after Bheema.However, archaeological evidence discovered in the region puts the origins of the tow to about 3rd century BCE and shows that the town was closely associated to early Buddhism. The town is home to the beautiful and tranquil Bheemunipatnam Beach, which is located at the confluence of Gosthani River and the Bay of Bengal. Visitors can visit the remains of a 17th century fort and cemetery which were constructed by the early Dutch settlers. Visitors can find remains of the Dutch East India Company here, in particular a port, which is not in ruins.

Pavuralakonda - This Buddhist settlement found here is estimated to have witnessed human habitation in 1st century BC to 2nd century AD. Sixteen rock cut cisterns for impounding rain water are found on the hillock, which offer a panoramic view of the coastline. Pavuralakonda or the "Hill of Pigeons

Thotlakonda Buddhist Archaeological Site - The Telugu name Thotlakonda derived from the presence of a number of a rock-cut through hewn in the bedrock of the hillock (cisterns).Thotlakonda was well within the influence of ancient Kalinga region which was an important source of dissemination of Buddhist culture to Sri Lanka and various parts of south-east Asia. It provides an insight into the process of Trans Oceanic diffusion of Indian culture, especially Buddhism. A hill on the sea coast with salubrious climate was an ideal attraction for the Buddhist monks to build a monastery complex here. The placid sea sheltered by the deeply in curved coastline here, provided a safe haven for anchoring ships.
Thotlakonda came to light during an aerial survey by the Indian Navy for setting up a Naval Base. After its discovery, major excavations have been conducted by the Andhra Pradesh State Archaeology Department during 1988 - 1993. The excavations established the existence of a Hinayana Buddhist complex which flourished 2000 years ago. To the South of the complex there is a tank which served as a water source to the inhabitants of the monastery. The excavations reveal Satavahana period lead and Roman silver coins indicating foreign trade; Terracotta tiles stucco decorative pieces, sculptured panels miniature stupa models in stone, Buddha padas etc.; were also found. The excavations also yielded 12 Brahmi Label inscriptions. From the Polygraphic studies, it appears that the hill might have been known as senagiri. "Sena" in Pali means elder, superior.

Thotlakonda witnessed peak activity between the 2nd Century B.C. and the 2nd Century A.D. owing to brisk Roman trade and religious missions sent abroad. Thotlakonda did not exist in isolation. It came into existence along with nearby sites in Visakhapatnam district like Bavikonda and Pavurallakonda. The lofty stupas shining during the day with their light lime plaster and with rows of wick lamps during nights might have served as guiding landmarks of Nautical Commuters. There appears to have been no royal patronage for this monastery. However traders and local believers seem to
have supported the complex. In its heyday Thotlakonda might have accommodated more than 100 Buddhist monks. The complex had arrangements for storing food, clothing, medicines and served as a religious cum academic centre. Hinayana Buddhism appears to have been practiced here which involved worship of Gautama Buddha through symbols like Pudukas and other material remains and not in human form.
Thotlakonda declined by the end of 3rd Century A.D. Historians opine that it could be due to the rise of Hinduism and decline in maritime trade.

Big mistake of not booking hotel online. 1 or 2 hr was lost in searching hotel. Finally checked-in the hotel at 7pm ate dinner and call it a day.

Next morning we went up to Kailasagiri hill

As we came down from Kailasagiri its started raining heavily. It gave us a bit of scare. We decided to had breakfast & by the time we finish it the rain was gone

It again started raining and we were standing in front of "INS Kursura Sub-Marine Museum" . It open for public at 10am and we were before time. We could have waited for 30 min but because of rain we have to move one. Kids enjoying football in rain close-by port.

Someone found a new friend

We wanted to see the Dolphin's Nose & lighthouse but it was written as restricted area. As we were already stopped once by the guard near by the durga mandir so we continue towards yarada beach.

Back on Nh5, As we left Vizag saw this dhaba. its 2pm and we were hungry. Avoid it guys. bad food. left the place at 3pm.

Reached Ichchapuram at 6 pm fill up the tanks. Sugat decided to ride to bbsr, I & Taufique went for Chilika Dhaba. Reached Chilika dhaba at 7 pm keep waiting for hour or so as Taufique was lost. Finally Taufique rached dhaba at 8 pm. We had some tasty food and left for bbsr at 9pm.
