Instead of directly adding pics as attachments, upload them to Picasa and put those pics' URLs as the source (second tab during pic attachment process).

A bit about Sambalpur : Sambalpur serves as the gateway to the bewitching western zone of Odisha, abounding in lush green forests, colourful wild-life, exquisite array of hills and waterfalls, folk songs and dances and a number of monuments. Sambalpur has its own contribution to the cultural diversity of our country.
Referred to as 'Sambalak' by the Greek Geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD and 'Sambhal' in the medieval Tibetan literature, Sambalpur is one of the oldest cities of India. In the 8th century A.D, Sambalpur led the world by founding Vajrayan Buddhism by its King Indrabhuti, one of the 84 traditional Siddhas of India. Once a part of South Koshal, Sambalpur was a fortified town during the Chouhan rule. During the British rule also Sambalpur was a major centre of political activities. It was annexed to the British empire under the "Doctrine of lapse" in 1849 after Raja Narayan Singh died issueless. Veer Surendsra Sai, a scion of the royal dynasty rose in revolt and gave the Britishers sleepless nights during the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. He continued his struggle long after the Mutiny had collapsed in the rest of India. Following his footsteps, Sambalpur played an important role in the freedom movement later. Gangadhar Meher the famous Odiya poet of nature has brought laurels for the locality by his immortal writings.
Sambalpur had the tradition of producing diamonds extracted from the sands of the river Mahanadi at Hirakud, literally meaning 'Diamond Island'. The cultivated plains yield numerous varieties of paddy, some of which are the finest in the country.
Sambalpur with its vicinity has earned international fame for the traditional handloom fabrics, popularly called the Sambalpuri textiles. The products exhibit considerable taste in harmonious blending of colours and elaborate richness of pattern and designs. It covers a wide variety of products - from furnishings to dress materials and tapestry. But the most popular among them is the colourful saree which has almost become synonymous with the whole range of products.

The region is rich in folk art and culture. The rhythmic Sambalpuri dances accompanied by lyrical music in various forms are vigorous and inspiring.
Sambalpur is endowed with natural splendour unspoiled by modern commercial development. It is fascinating to be in the midst of nature in all its glory

Leaning Temple ofHuma - Famous as the abode of Lord Siva, Huma contains the lone leaning templeof Orissa and also famous as a scenic spot of great excellence. The riverMahanadi flowing close by abounds in fish (Kudo fish) which are never caught. The popular belief is that they belong to Lord Bimaleswar.

Hirakud Dam - One of the longest Dam in the world, Hirakud stands in its lone majesty across the great river Mahanadi which drains an area of 1,33,090 Sq. km more than twice the area of SriLanka. The bulk of this Dam contains earth, concrete and masonry materials, "sufficient to make a road 8 metre wide and pave it from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and Amritsar to Dibrugarh in Assam. From horizon to horizon the reservoir forms the largest artificial lake in Asia with an area of 746 Sq.km having a shore line over 640 km. A twenty-one kilometres drive on the dyke affords a unique experience of calm serenity and majesty of nature. One can enjoy the sight of the mighty Hirakud Dam and the fantastic expanse of water from the top of the revolving minaret called Gandhi Minar on the north end and comfortably stay at Ashok Nivas, a luxury Guest House adjoining the Nehru Minar at the other end of the Dam. As the largest multi-purpose river valley project of the world

Great narration. With a dash of history. This should be the way to introduce a place in a travelog. Specially ejen that place is the only destination. Thus, people from other parts of the country get to know about the place.

After crossing Belpahar we rode on a terrible road for 14-15 km. It was hard to think that we had to ride back again through this road. Then we found a small road side shop and had our breakfast. Here we came to know that we can ride through the forest from Koilighugar Waterfall to Bikramkhol. Then as the chat continues we asked him about that Naxal presence. He said we just came to hear that they have come back and had been spotted in few village but you guys don’t worry. WTH!!! Why shouldn't we worry?[Normally they do not harm common people their fight is with Govt but you never know]. Still then we went ahead with the plan

Koilighughar waterfall - The Koilighugar Waterfall is in the Lakhanpur, near the village Kushmelbahal. The waterfall is in a rivulet named Ahiraj which originates from the 'Chhuikhanch' forest. After the fall the rivulet flow west wards to merge into the Mahanadi River. It is a picturesque beauty spot with its sylvan back drop.

                  Woo - hoo its working

We took the risk and went through the road said by the shop owners. Green line is the road we went through. There were so many diversion with no mile marker what so ever. We even took 3 -4 turn but somehow it worked out and we came out to the main road connecting kanika.

Bikramkhol - it is a cave containing Pictographic Inscription (1,500 B.C. or even earlier) of great antiquity. This pre-historic find is of remarkable importance and is yet to be deciphered. The plaster-cast of the inscription can also be seen in the Orissa State Museum at Bhubaneswar.

5 km dirt trail and off-roding, it was fun. On our way to Bikramkhol . Kushal got stuck Taufique checking "did i got gobbar on my hand for helping this guy" yes indeed

Junagarh - A fort of historical and archaeological importance with some ancient caves having marks of tantra worship.

Junagarh Fort - As we all know the treaty signed by Govt and Rajas after independence. Most of the property is taken away by Govt. No difference in this case. We waited about an hour to meet the current Raja Mr Singh to ask for permission to see the palace. we saw the portion which are not in use now. This is the back ally use to get in and out of the palace as the front gate is kept closed.

So we reach Rourkela around 7:30 pm. we checked in to a shitty hotel name solace. While having dinner, Mr Taufique who was having anda tadka and roti felt that the salt is bit less. Even after we try to make him understand to adjust a bit, he got angry and said No !!!. So he demanded the hotel staff for extra salt [mind you this hotel doesnt have restaurant and we had order food from outside] . This is what the staff gave him
. which he had to carry all the way back home. So new guys joining us, dont worry abt salt on upcoming trip Mamaji have it

Hanuman Vatika - The magnificent statue was sculpted by a renowned artist of Andhra Pradesh, Togu Laxman Swamy who took about two years to complete it. The height of the statue is 75 feet. Interestingly, when the statue was unveiled by the then chief minister Biju Patnaik on February 23, 1994, he was taken atop by a crane to garland the statue.

Mandira Dam - Known for the Dam across the river Sankha, constructed for supply of water to Rourkela and other places in the vicinity. It presents a picturesque sight, ideal for holidaying and picnic. Permission to enter the Dam site is issued by the Officer-in-Charge at the main entrance. Construction of the dam began after 1957. The dam displaced 2400 families and only 843 were resettled.

Do to fear of Naxal attack. photography is prohibited here.
