  • Re: Chronicles of LADAKH

    Day 14
    Friday - 19th June 2015

Today we had to book our bikes as luggage and catch train by night, but before that we had to get Siddhesh's bike running well in time. Reached garage around 10 in the morning, the mechanic had just arrived. He quickly understood the problem. The motorcycle ignition coil had went kaput and needed to be changed. He didn't have it with him so he asked the other guy to get it from other shop. I asked Siddhesh what if this problem had occurred on Leh - Manali highway far from localities or in Nubra valley where you hardly find a human being, finding garage was impossible. Siddhesh looked at me in a state of horror and said "Meloch asto yaar", we thanked god for not bringing any such problem to us during journey. Soon the guy brought the ignition coil and bike started in a swift after fitting it. This coil is quite small in size, but it can put you in unimaginably huge problems.

After sorting the bike issue, we returned to railway station premises which was right in front of our hotel. We were fooled by Mumbai agents, I did not want to take chance by asking agent to do the thing, so I asked the luggage officer about procedure, and he asked me to come back in the evening - 4 hours prior to the train departure time with required documents and fees. So now we had few hours in hand until 5 pm, our checkout time was 12 in the noon so we convinced hotel owner to keep our bags in the reception area till evening. It was time for lunch now, the only place struck into our mind was Kesar da Dhaba, so we visited it again to have lunch. Today I had limited food because heavy dose of Punjabi food made me sleep the whole day yesterday. Later we roamed around in the market area, bought a pair of Punjabi Juti for one of my very good friend, returned to hotel and passed next 3 hours sitting in reception area of the hotel we stayed for last 2 nights. Hotel Mehra Inn, people here are quite helpful, atmosphere outside was too hot and they allowed us to sit and take rest on sofas in an air conditioned reception area. Punjab it is!

Around 5:30 in the evening we visited railway station's luggage department, filled the forms, paid the fees and got our bikes fully wrapped in next one and half hour. The guys at luggage department asked us to leave it up to them and directly catch the train, they would look after bike loading thing. It was 7 pm by now, we took a walk around station and had light dinner at nearby restaurant and returned to hotel. Before finally leaving the hotel, we thanked them for the wonderful service and for allowing us to sit there, which did save quite a few bucks.

We arrived at railway station at around 8:30 pm and dumped ourselves with luggage in waiting room which was already full. Siddhesh took a walk around and I sat there talking to a Marathi family based out of Jammu, they too were travelling to Mumbai in the same train for a vacation. Called up home and informed that we are on our way back to home.

    Mini Heart Attack
Soon the train arrived and we got onto our berths, settled all the luggage and ran towards luggage compartment to see if our bikes are loaded or not. You will not believe but I literally had a heart attack when I saw my bike almost upside down standing on its rear tyre and tail light. The luggage compartment was full and only my bike was left and with that little space available they kept my bike in that manner. My bike is very beloved to me and I just couldn't see it like this. I scolded the loader for treating my bike like that and asked him to re-arrange all the luggage in order to put my bike safely, to which he asked me to get aside and said "Gaddi bhejna hai to aise hi jayega, warna nahi jayega". I went up to the supervisor and asked him to take a look at this, to which he said "Yeh hamara roz ka kaam hai, kuch ni hoga gaddi ko saabji". I ran up to the Police officer standing nearby and explained him my problem and he ignored me like I did not exist. I was angry and helpless at the same time. There was nothing I could do about it. The guys closed the compartment door and sealed it, I was looking at whole scenario in a state of shock. The little faith that I had in train transport, vanished completely at that moment.

Returned to my berth in complete desolation and went to sleep in anguish.

      Day 15
      Saturday - 20th June 2015

Woke up after we passed Mathura Junction. The only thought I had on my mind was about my bike. You cannot be at peace if the most beloved thing to you is not at peace. I was desperately waiting to reach Mumbai and get my bike off that boogie, but for that I had to wait for a day. It was boring to travel caged. We met those two guys who were travelling with us in the same compartment during Mumbai-Amritsar journey, they were with us this time as well, what a coincidence. These guys came as great help to me, they had a laptop with them which I used to copy videos from Siddhesh's action cam onto my phone. Sending 15GB of videos over internet could be a hectic task. A big thank you to these guys for saving GBs of data.

Had lunch at Kota Junction and dinner in the train itself, I had had a word with train chef and he agreed to cook some No Onion - No Garlic sabji and daal for me. I did not expect him to cook separately for me but I just tried asking him and he happily did it for me, what a man!

All the newspapers were talking about heavy rain in Mumbai, it was matter of concern for me as I had to ride out of Mumbai and reach Pune.

        Day 16
        Sunday - 21st June 2015

        The Last Fall
Around 11 am I reached Wakad and took service road to exit from the highway. I was all excited to reach home and I was riding fast in the excitement. The road was all wet and slippery. As I approached for home which was hardly 100 meters away, right before entering in the lane I braked and my rear tyre somehow got locked. I fish-tailed on the wet slippery road and the bike slipped and I fell off it. I was all safe and bike too was safe, all thanks to my riding gear. I laughed out loud over there, what better way to end such a legendary roadtrip. I was now used to such unexpected falls.

Reached home and I was welcomed by whole of my family. All my aunts and their kids were home for lunch. We had just bought this new home few days back, renovation and shifting was done in my absence, all thanks to my brother. So I was entering in our new home for the first time, can you imagine how happy I was? I wish I was better at telling people how I really feel. My two life size dreams, to have our own home and a Roadtrip to Ladakh, turned into reality at the same time.

Entered in the new home, got freshened up and met everyone. Called up Siddhesh and informed that I have reached home safely. Later I had lunch with all of my family.

For me it was like a celebration party for Successful Completion of Dream Roadtrip to Ladakh.

How I wish that this roadtrip never ended. I wish I get to be a part of bigger adventures and explore new places in a time to come.

                  After Notes

                  Latest Update on Road Conditions
                  >> Jammu-Srinagar highway is in the same condition as always, busy and full of potholes.

                  >> Srinagar-Leh highway is in wonderful shape except for Zoji la and few kilometres before Drass and Mulbekh. I hope the loose gravel stretch around Drass and Mulbekh will be paved by next year.

                  >> Agham-Shyok route is meant only for 4x4 high ground clearance vehicles.

                  >> 15-20 kms on both the sides of Khardung la, Chang la, and Baralacha la are broken.

                  >> Northern side of Rohtang la and southern side of Tanglang la is broken.

                  >> Leh-Manali highway is okay with occasional broken stretches.

                  >> Manali-Kullu stretch is full of potholes.

After riding through Srinagar - Leh - Manali circuit, I can say that the road condition is far better compared to few years back. Some of the most famous travelogues on forum talk about some horrible stretches which are totally eliminated. BRO is doing a wonderful job.

                  Water Streams

I have heard a lot about crazy water streams en route. That deadly water stream on the way to Pangong Tso is eliminated, BRO has built a heavy metal bridge upon it. Since we were riding early in the season, I did not face water streams except for Sarchu - Jispa stretch.

                  Permits

Unlike old days, Indian national does not require Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit Nubra valley, Pangong Tso, Man Merak, Nyoma and Tso Moriri. But you still require ILP to visit Mersimik la, Hanle and Batalik sectors. ILP can be obtained from Leh DC office. Rules remain unchanged for foreign nationals.

Few words about my riding partner @siddheshparadkar

                  Few words about my bike

Bajaj Pulsar 180, common man's common bike, achieved an uncommon feat. It has been on Khardung la - Highest Motorable Road in the World. Khardung la is to Motorcycle what Mt. Everest is to Man.

I was unsure about my bike before commencing the trip, whether it will fare well up above in Ladakh or not. Today I am proud of this machine when it came across three states, thousands of kilometres and number of falls without any problem. P180 lived up to the expectations and gained lot of respect from me. No breakdowns, No punctures and No problems at all. There were times when I was totally relying on my bike only and it never gave up even in the harshest of the conditions. I was wondering when it started in a swift after living through one of the coldest night at Pangong Tso. 18 litres of fuel capacity with range of around 700 kms at one go, I never had to carry extra cans of petrol during trip like other riders. Many a times people en route used to ask me "How can you take a Roadtrip to Ladakh on Pulsar? Is it comfortable? Is it reliable?" It was most comfortable bike to me as I was used to it. There is no point in taking a bike you are not used to on such a long journey. And now after reading through the whole travelogue you better know how reliable it was, if you leave aside the tyres. P180 turned to be totally reliable, and let me tell you that it was economical as well. Too light on pockets compared to other motorcycles.

Few words about the whole ride

There are few points that I would like to mention here.

                  Ek Se Bhale Do
No doubt you can climb a mountain alone on your own, but the fun doubles if you have a company. I chose to ride in a company instead of solo and I cherish my decision. Solo rides have its own fun and I do look forward to have one, maybe I wasn't prepared for that now. Riding in a company of another rider gives you that emotional support which is really necessary. It also limits yourself from going extreme and makes you responsible.

Leh - Manali RouteRoutine of TippingAMSPhotographs
Many a times during long and hammering riding sessions, I was in a lost state of mind because of which I missed on capturing many of the beautiful places. I wanted to click pictures at Patnitop, Moonland, Nubra valley, Shyok-Durbuk stretch, Chang la, Desert after Tanglang la, Pang, Baralacha la and during last day of the roadtrip. I missed on capturing many such unimaginably beautiful places. Wish I had spared some time at these places to have few clicks to cherish for lifetime.

If your itinerary is same as mine, then no permit is required. Permit is required for Mersimek la, and Hanle I think.

Good luck for ride of your lifetime. Have fun, ride safe, be good while in himalayas.
