“Wandering is the activity of the child, the passion of the genius; it is the discovery of the self, the discovery of the outside world, and the learning of how the self is both "at one with" and "separate from" the outside world. These discoveries are as fundamental to the soul as "learning to survive" is fundamental to the body. These discoveries are essential to realizing what it means to be human. To wander is to be alive.”

It's no surprise that Bangalore is always busy and crowded, no matter what time of the day or year. Case in point - MG Road to Electronic City. There were people at 4 AM on MG Road and there was considerable amount of traffic all the way till the elevated expressway leading DS out of the city.
Single lane-ing (presumably) of the road in front of Forum mall didn't help matters either.

It was a chilly ride in the morning by Bangalore standards. Riding solo has many perks. One is at leisure. To stop anywhere. To take any deviation on the fly.
There were 2 groups of bikers - A bullet group with flags and a SBK group (Triumph Tiger, N650 and Z800) who left the Hosur toll gate along with DS. They would come across each other often, overtaking one another at regular intervals.

Someone has rightly said, “A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” He did get to make some unique friends. The kind of warmth not restricted to a club, but just a helping hand. A pat on the shoulder when least expected, an amusing reaction from the other one which just lightened the mood of the day.

It was pretty standard affair till Krishnagiri when DS had to stop for tea and for clearing up his fogged up visor. Soon he was off and sun was coming out.

Stopped somewhere near Dharmapuri for a pee break and waited for the sunrise while the bullet gang and SBK group sped away!

It was an uneventful ride till Salem in foggy conditions and holidaying people had started pouring in. Lot of buses to Yercaud were seen and DS relived his memories of the place, having been there thrice already.

It was a pretty standard affair till Madurai outskirts, which he reached at 12 PM. Some pics en route.

However, the rider made a mistake of going through Madurai city and god was it maddening! The only positive that happened was the the Z800 rider stopped him at the beginning of the city (route, which even he should have taken) and patted him on the back and gave a thumbs up. It was a surreal feeling.

However, after an hour long struggle, the rider was on the ring road to Rameshwaram. He met the Bullet gang again. For some reason they never waived and the group leader looked like a girl from the attire and riding posture. And yes, she indeed was!

Very soon ECR was reached. As scenic as it is, it is dangerous with no dividers and oncoming buses pay no two hoots getting one off the road during their overtaking maneuvers.

DS kept chugging along, absorbing the beauty and trying to not get hit by buses at the same time. The scenery remained same for the next 75 km.

Very soon, he and the bullet gang reached a railway crossing which was closed and a train crossed. Something immediately struck! Rameshwaram is nearby and there is a train in front.
Could DS be that lucky? Yes he was! Upon inquiry he got to know that Pamban bridge was 7 km away but the train has to cover only half the distance. Hence, it started a race which eventually the rider won.

Unlike most pics taken in the morning of the bridge, at this time of the day, Pamban bridge was jam packed and had a great police presence. This meant that the bike was parked and the rider started racing with the train on foot.

Another go at an HDR image.

The other side of the bridge was as beautiful.

That's it! He purred inside the city in search of the hotel and it was only 4:30 PM.

After some struggle, he located the hotel and checked in. The receptionist was wide eyed looking at the attire and bike loaded with saddlebags. He asked where was the rider coming from. When he heard Bangalore, he could only yell out : "How dare you?"

That just brought a chuckle to the rider's tired face. Soon, he checked in and got fresh.

The evening consisted of exploring the city and its temples. Cameras are not allowed inside temple premises. After a healthy dinner post city exploration, it was time for bed! Only that the windows were open and the moon looked beautiful.

Tomorrow morning was going to be epic. Dhanushkodi for sun rise and then Kanyakuari by evening. Also, @plasmabhai

Yes, I'm taking my car on this route very soon. Yes, beaches were dirty and I usually avoid bathing in public anyway.

              He he thanks!

              Multiple reasons to it though:
              1. New office, have to stick to timings - leaves little time(initial impressions, can adjust later if I manage a good rapport and work relationship).

                    Thanks.
                    -------------------------

It was morning. 4 AM to be precise. The agenda was to watch sun rise in Dhanushkodi and come back, take rest and scoot forward towards Kanyakumari. Nagercoil to be precise.
SP would be leaving from Bangalore early morning towards the pre booked hotel, Stella Residency in Nagercoil.

Amusing things happen to DS all the time. He left the hotel at 5 AM and asked a bystander; the road to Dhanushkodi. The old man obliged by offering himself the pillion seat and said he wanted to get dropped on the way.
So, there you go! DS was being navigated around town. But there was an issue initially. The man would say take left, when he meant right and vice versa. After 3 such incidents, it was clear his directions were messed up. So when he uttered "right", DS would take left and left meant turning the handle bar the other way round. The man was dropped near the railway station and a board said Dhanushkodi - 16 km (Straight).

After slowly ambling towards the place partly due to low light and partly due to sandy roads, DS reached the place at 5:50 AM and reached the police check-post. He was stopped there by a couple of guards, but they agreed to let him in provided he take one of them as pillion. He was elated.
However, the joy didn't last long. 5 min and 2 km later, he had to stop due to a big pile of stones and the fact that the security guard sitting pillion wouldn't let him ride further stating that his job may be in jeopardy. Thus DS decided to park his bike right there and took out his camera.

Soon the sun came out and it felt majestic!

Road to Sri Lanka. (after walking about 100 m away from the bike)

                    Another shot of sunrise.

Lot of construction work is going on!

                    A construction worker.

                    Boats.

                    Sand all around.

                    Curious case of a Bullet.

                    Guys having fun!

Now, DS proceeded to Ram temple and paid respects. Crowd was thickening and he was out in 15 min flat! The best thing was ocean on both sides.

Soon DS was back to the hotel and got fresh. After a brief 30 min nap, he was off! Time was 9:40ish AM.

There were 2 options - ECR all the way or ECR + SH = join NH at Tirunelveli. DS took the 2nd option. Very big mistake!!! Every bone in the body got rattled.

                    While the roads were good.

                    When they got bad.

The worst part was that it took him 3 hours to cover 80 odd km. SP called DS to ask his whereabouts when it was revealed that SP is ahead by at least 30 min. He said he'd proceed and wait at Nagercoil.

DS continued and after a bone jarring rice he reached Tirunelveli outskirts.
Seldom do highways seem so good. Smooth tarmac. Bliss!

Suddenly, it started raining and it stopped only after 52 odd km. DS quickly called SP and got to know that he's only 5 km away. He was relieved. The area was windy and why not? It has a windmill farm.

One such windmill by the highway.

Soon, DS met SP after the 2nd day's ride of 310 km.

Soon both started searching the hotel in Nagercoil, which was supposed to be 20 km away. They were currently at Kavalkinaru. The time was 4:30 PM.

But it seemed that adventures for the day had just started. The elusive hotel was nowhere to be found. Culprit? Absolutely rubbish address provided while booking.
Actually, as per few good samaritans (and correctly so, verified the next day), the hotel was in Kavalkinaru and not in Nagercoil. By the time both realized that further searching was futile and going back through city in such heavy traffic would be a giant P.I.T.A, they decided to check in another hotel.

Bada wala kela ho gaya tha!

Hotel Sri Krishna Inn! Almost 7 PM.

The best feature about the hotel was: hygiene!

After a bath and sumptuous dinner, both decided to have a walk around town.

Since there were no cameras, DS took a few pics on phone which brought a smile to his face.

Especially this one - Sai Baba pictures presents something classic.

It was enough dope for the day already. The next was was going to be hectic. But both were supposed to witness sunrise at one of the most serene places in India - Kanyakumari. Did someone say serene? Well yeah! Serene got a new meaning in under 9 hours from that point in time.

                        Thanks a lot dada!
                        ----------------------

Today was the 3rd and (supposedly the) last day of the trip. Watching sunrise at Kanyakumari was the agenda. Since Kanyakumari is only 20 odd km away from where these two were staying, they decided that leaving the hotel by 5:30 AM would be fine.

After getting fresh, both of them set towards Kanyakumari. City roads in Nagercoil are below par and not at all like roads are known to be in TN!

One such image borrowed from Google.

Since kanyakumari is at mean sea level, DS suffered a lot due to crosswinds early morning. The place is unusually windy.

But both guys weren't exactly prepared for what they saw in Kanyakumari. The amount of commercialization was appalling and there were thousands of people present already by 6:15 AM if not a lac. There was absolutely no space to set foot properly.

Plus the worst thing about our nation is that people defecate anywhere they wish to, add to that the heavy winds and the entire environment smelled crap, quite literally.
Both DS and SP managed to perch themselves on a wall and managed to take a set of pics of the whole sunrise event.

People in attendance. And sequence of pics depicting sunrise.

After having witnessed sunrise to their heart's content, both riders head back to the hotel so that they could take some rest and feed before heading back home.
It was 11:30 AM when they left the hotel and SP stopped by the movie theatre where DS took the poster's pic again.

At this point SP remarked that the trip might extend by a day and Salem would be the stop over point for the night.

Then, both stopped near the windmill farm to click few pics, but none came out well.

Then, both saw what they wanted to see. STELLA RESIDENCY. Damn!

Then began the struggle, of fighting crosswinds and stupid traffic behavior. There were almost two big accidents involving other vehicles on the highway.
They started taking breaks every hour, mainly due to DS. He had a very sore behind. Apologies to SP for the same. SP has buttocks made of steel!

Also, both got to see standard stuff near Sivakasi.

However, the highlight for riders came within a short gap towards evening.

Finally, the best break came before reaching Salem where they had tummy full of dinner. This was before reaching Karur. The best set of Onion dosas till date.

SP's words had come true. Stopping in Salem was inevitable. But the hammer came down when a bus almost decided to T bone DS and he proclaimed that they better start early morning from Salem. Sid agreed.

They got in to a shabby hotel where everybody wanted baksheesh at 9:30 PM and got their bikes' tanks full and crashed into the bed.

It was a regular run back to Bangalore early morning.

                        Few snaps on the way.

This driver had a unique style of sleeping.

                        At a chai tapri.

Next stop was at NICE ring road, Bangalore. The trip had eventually come to an end. But they still had 50 km to cover.

About an hour later, roughly at 10 AM, both bid good byes as DS had to rush to office and SP had to report to a lab meet in college.
                        Until the next ride!

                        Trip meter. ~1677 km.

Also, the bike used almost 32 liters of petrol, meaning a mileage of 52+ kmpl at 80ish speeds.

That's it from DS' perspective! Hope you guys liked it.

its the last 50 km which are the most painful, the roads are so familiar, to the point of boredom, the trip is about to end, not a good feeling at all...

Absolutely! Heightened traffic, a little bit of complacency and the feeling that "holidays over, schools start" isn't good at all.
