    DAY 1 | 19 Dec 2015 | Mumbai to Chittorgarh

    DAY 1 | 19 Dec 2015 | Mumbai to Chittorgarh

    Route: Mumbai - Dhule - Manpur - Ratlam - Neemuch - Chittorgarh
    Distance: 850 Kms
Road Condition: Excellent 4 lane highway till Manpur followed by 2 lane highway till Chittorgarh. Annoying rumblers all the way till Manpur.
    Stay: Hotel RnB, Chittorgarh

There's a saying that even the longest and the most difficult ventures have a starting point, for us it was Aamchi Mumbai. After some eager planning and discussions, the D Day arrived for us to embark on our maiden journey of Sikkim to discover the mystical land of mountains, monastries, lakes and much more The ride began at an early hour before the crack of dawn when the roads are silent and empty. Distance wise the first day’s ride till Chittorgarh was the longest ride in a day of the entire journey. Swapnil Shelar a fellow Ninja 650 rider gave us company till Igatpuri from where he returned back home. The ride was fast paced due to the presence of lovely 4 lane highway all the way till Manpur. With a couple of breaks for breakfast and lunch we cruised to Manpur by late noon with ease. The only aspect of the ride which I hated today was the presence of rumblers throughout NH3 till Manpur. It was extremely annoying and especially since I was riding with pillion. Infinite number of these rumblers definitely add a good hour or so of delay to an otherwise smooth ride. By the time we crossed Ratlam it was getting dark and we had another 150 odd kms to complete for the day. A good sprint in the night thanks to the well laid tarmac all the way to Chittorgarh helped us reach in good time. HV Sir had already booked rooms for us through CHD (Central Hotel Desk) - A service which is used by numerous travelers across India for hotel accommodation. We need to inform CHD team 3 hours in advance and they book the hotel and share the details with us. Impressive! Is n’t it?

After reaching the hotel, we made it a point to clean the chain & lube it with Motul lubricants as it’s best to do this process when the chain is hot so that the cleaner penetrates in the rubber seals to clean the dust and mud accumulated. A nice shower followed by good dine at Hotel RnB we crashed to the bed after riding 850 kms. A good start to a very long journey.

Regarding the photo resizing. Photos are automatically resized by the forum according to file size. Optimal size for posting on the forum is 800px longer length. If you want to post larger sized photos (and ensure they remain of the size you want) then you will have to upload first on a photo sharing website like flickr and hotlink the photos on the forum.

        Cheers
Thanks for the suggestion! It worked. I m using my flickr account to hotlink the photos.

Ha-Ha. Thanks my dear friend. Midori is rocking but needs chain sprocket replacement and there is a small hole in the exhaust which needs to be fixed.

Wow!! Eagerly waiting for this thread. Excellent pictures and a very promising start to the trip log.

The first such a long trip for the CBR650F in India. I am already looking to this for the tips.

Just as a starting point, can you post which saddle/tail bag was used on the CBR650F and how did it perform.

          Thank you

That saddle bag is Viaterra Claw! About the performance part you might have to ask the rider!

              Hi Rachit,
Yes, mine is possibly the first CBR 650F in India to tour in the North East!

I have had a thorough test of the motorcycle during the length of the trip - good roads, bad roads, super bad roads, craters, gravel, wet roads, slush, mud, icy roads and black ice. The CBR has done it all and without any fuss

As for the luggage bag, it is the ViaTerra Claw. In my opinion it is the best thing to have if you wish to tour solo. It can be mounted and secured via its 3 way straps pretty easily - unmounting is hassle free too.
Once you setup the Claw on the bike, it is unshakable. On bad roads though, you might want to refasten the securing straps (30 second job) because the bag tends to slide forward a bit - honestly this happens only when the roads are super bad. On highways though you need not worry at all
Even if you're doing high speeds - like way above the legal limit, the Claw holds its ground - as I said it is literally unshakable! Good thing to have for solo tourers I reckon

              Cheers
              Regards,

                  DAY 2 | 20 Dec 2015 | Chittorgarh to Jhansi

                  DAY 2 | 20 Dec 2015 | Chittorgarh to Jhansi

                  Route:
                  Chittorgarh - Kota - Baran - Shahabad - Shivpuri - Jhansi
                  Distance: 495 Kms
Road Condition: Excellent 4 lane highway. Bad roads before entering Kota city and traffic in Kota city to be navigated. Be cautious of Nilgai crossing in Kota and extreme caution needed throughout this route especially between Baran to Shivpuri for large cattle crossings.
                  Stay: Hotel Sita, Jhansi

Chittorgarh to Kota was a fantastic 150 kms early morning ride which allowed us to maintain good speeds on arrow straight roads. It’s a cement concrete laid road which has huge Godzilla lines all the way for traction perhaps but that also makes the bike fishtail to some extent so we rode with caution obviously. This stretch also made us stop couple of times for photos and videos as it is very isolated and very inviting to take a break away from the crowd.

Finding good food hotels is a bit of challenge on such highways so we took early stop for lunch when a good hotel passed us. Who knows if there is a decent hotel ahead or not. Post Kota to Jhansi we rode on plush tarmac urging you to pick up speed and cover distances whereas the beautiful Sarson ke Khet (Mustard fields) tempt you to enjoy the views and at times stop to click some pictures. Quite a contrasting situation Is n’t it? Numerous cattle crossings on the national highway reminds us of the grave dangers on the road if one is not careful so we navigated our way till Jhansi with great caution. To some extent these cautions also played a key role in keeping us awake from sleep as the straight highways do become boring at times even though you have a powerful bike. Petrol pumps become a little scarce too on this highway and we came across a situation where we entered Shivpuri to fill petrol as most of us hit reserve since there were no fuel pumps in sight for good 30 to 40 kms. Now this petrol pump where we filled fuel was damn impressive, it had free WiFi and refreshments shop along with a nice seating, fountain & music too. Talk about facilities in middle of nowhere. So after enjoying a nice 30 odd minutes of break the ride continued. Again we found ourselves doing last stretch of the ride in dark till we reached the chaotic town of Jhansi to halt for the day at Hotel Sita as per HV Sir’s recommendation. Another eventful day’s ride and good roads made our journey pleasant so far.

                    Day 3 | 21 Dec 2015 | Jhansi to Kushinagar

                    Day 3 | 21 Dec 2015 | Jhansi to Kushinagar

                    Route: Jhansi - Orai - Kanpur - Faizabad - Basti - Gorakhpur - Kushinagar
                    Distance: 640 Kms
Road Condition: Bad roads start 10 kms before Orai and continue all the way till Kanpur. Be careful not to take the big flyover before Kanpur as it leads to Allahabad. Frustrating Kanpur city traffic all the way till Lucknow. Lucknow to Kushinagar - Excellent 4 lane highway.
Stay: Hotel Pathik Niwas (UPSTDC), Kushinagar

Today we were in for some fun. Fun as in riding on bad roads, abusing people inside our helmets and so on. You know what I mean! The ride progressed fine on a nice hazy morning till we reached Orai from where the fun part begins. The road had godzilla foot sized craters and undulations throughout the road due to the heavy containers and lorries driven here I assume. The craters are so big that if by any chance your front rim or rear for that matter goes in that, it’s GAME OVER. With some luck and lot of patience the entire group managed to cross this horror patch without any dramas only to meet a new surprise.

Once the good road began before Kanpur, we were welcomed by a flyover which once you enter is actually a never ending flyover with butter smooth tarmac which by passes entire Kanpur city and actually takes you to Allahabad rather than Lucknow where we were suppose to head. After crossing that flyover we realised we had travelled 15 kms in wrong direction from our itinerary. We had no choice but to turn back and ride 15 kms to enter Kanpur city. Kanpur city is much like riding in Sakinaka, Mumbai during peak hours. Honking horns everywhere, bikers and every other moving soul crying for every inch of space the road has to offer. This was by far the most frustrating part of today’s ride. I lost my patience as my defensive and sane riding was not matching up to the chaos I was in and decided to ride like one of them. Yeah! That’s what the road did to me, it turned me into a roadside Rossi for some distance until sense prevailed in me and I was back to my normal state.

Meet & Greet with Roaring Indians Group, Lucknow: We had received immense help last year during our Bhutan ride from Roaring Indians group member, Rishabh Katiyar when 2 of our Ninja’s had broken fork seals. Rishabh helped us navigate to KTM Lucknow outlet and arranged everything before we arrived.

Luckily he was free to meet us this time too and along with his riding buddy Asad Lari who rides a Harley Street 750 we rode in Lucknow city together where we halted for a nice lunch in Hotel Food Hunt. The owner of the restaurant, Shivam had an accent to remember (PUN INTENDED) and something which was even more unforgettable was what we ate there. Shivam insisted us to try the ‘Pizza Indica’ which was truly one of the most delicious pizza I have ever had (not kidding). I would recommend everyone visiting Lucknow to halt here just to taste the pizza, it’s incredibly tasty. Other members of the RI group we met were Andrew James (xbhpians shall remember him as the first Biker of the Year Winner) and Prakhar. It was a pleasant outing and we bid adios to the RI team post lunch with a promise that LOST will plan a night halt in Lucknow next time we come here.

The ride from Lucknow to Kushinagar is exactly opposite of what we went through from Jhansi to Lucknow. The roads were well paved and we could easily cover distances at a much faster pace. Today owing to a lot of bad roads and an elongated lunch session in Lucknow we had to ride for 4 odd hours in night and it took some effort to make it to Kushinagar but the group was very positive on reaching the target for the day and eventually it felt good after we made it to Kushinagar.
