  • My first tryst with touring: Vasco to Kottayam , alone on a bike

It was 5 in the morning, and the E on my fuel gauge was flashing. I knew that the CBR 250 still had more than 3 litres left so I pushed on....... 10 kms..... 20 kms....... 30 kms....... Not a single petrol pump was open! Despite the morning chill, I was sweating now, after so much detailed planning, was I really going to get stranded away from home, in a different state, at 5 in the morning, all alone, just a few hours into my first solo bike ride? ..............

It all started a few weeks ago. I had to go to Kochi on official work. My parents however were in the process of constructing a house in a small village in Kottayam district. So a few days leave would provide us a wonderful opportunity to visit them and help them out a little , and thereafter proceed to Kochi for work!
But soon I realised that going with my family would not be possible as both of my children had exams that week and my wife couldn't just leave them and join me. So the germ of the idea, that may be, just may be , I could do the trip by bike.... I was very excited, but I knew I still had to convince my wife. To my immense surprise she agreed without even a fuss. What she said was so inspiring. She said " if its ur dream and it makes you happy then I will never stop you from doing what you love, all I ask is for you to remember your family waiting for you here at home, so please be safe". I was touched but exhilarated and so the planning began.
I asked around, googled and posted on xbhp for the best route. I had to reach a village in changanacherry in Kerala. I have driven down a few times via nh 66 and nh 47. And finally I realised that it was still the best route. Though the roads between mangaluru and kasargod were expected to be really bad, and roads in Kerala to be both in poor condition and crowded, it was still better and faster than having to go via any other route. So after lots of deliberation , I came up with a plan. My route would be vasco- karwar- bhatkal- mangaluru- kannur- alapuzha - changanacherry. A total of 875 kms as per Google maps.
The distance was daunting and as per Monk and rider 11's advice, I decided to break the journey into two parts.
I knew that roads in the Karnataka section of the route, while under construction at many parts was still excellent. So in order to make the best time there and take advantage of less traffic, my plan was to leave Vasco at 0100 hours on 14 Feb, ride through the early morning hours to cover as much as possible, continue into Kerala in the day, and stop by 1700h and make a night halt. Thereafter to continue the next day and reach home before lunch. The plan seemed sound especially considering the traffic conditions in Kerala.
Now a word about my gear. One has to remember that this was to be my first solo trip more than 100 kms and so I was very excited but also had a lot of kitting up to do. I already had a THH helmet which is pretty decent, so I went to the Performance store in Goa and bought myself a DSG evo jacket, Fox Knee sliders, pro biker gloves ( not a smart decision) and Rynox stacker saddle bags. I also bought an 11000 mah power bank to feed my power hungry smart phone, ORS packets, chocolate bars, pepper spray( for safety) , a mini torch among other things. I spent a lot of time preparing and finally on 13 Feb I went off to sleep at 1600h, the aim being to sleep till 0001h and then wake up, get ready and leave by 0100. He he , I can almost hear the old timers chuckling.......I did sleep at 1600h, but woke right up at 1730h! My body just refused to accept the change in my Circadian rhythm! I tried and tried, and finally by 2000h I fell asleep.
Triiiiiiiiiiiiing rang my alarm and I was up immediately, at 12 midnight. I quickly got ready and after a quick shower , meal and a prayer was saddled up , super excited and ready to leave, my nerves tingling with excitement.

Re: My first tryst with touring: Vasco to Kottayam , alone on a bike

Thanks you all for the support and profuse apologies for the delay. But with work and the return journey, my hands were full and I couldn't continue with my narrative of my first bike journey! But without further ado, back to the journey......
So with my nerves tingling adrenalin pumping I carried out my final checks on my steed, tyre pressure, tautness of saddle bag fasteners, my equipment , everything I could think of. I had on my jacket , knee sliders, gloves, ankle boots and my helmet. Now my helmet is a beautiful THH which i bought online. Its perfect in all aspects.......save one. It has a tinted visor. Now i had seen pics of people (divya sharan i think) and their red eyes due to riding with the visor up, but I couldn't quite ride with a tinted visor at night. So i bought a pair of clear googles online. These cheap goggles also i put on and prepped up.My wife and my younger son came down in order to see me off on my adventure. I was a bit sad because despite the excitement, I was leaving my wife on 14 Feb, Valentines day, for a solo adventure! But kudos to my wife to appreciate my thirst for adventure and trust me enough to let me go. So after a few kisses and hugs, I was finally on my way.
I had initially planned to start at 0100h but finally my wheels rolled at 0130h, and I gunned my engine to maintain a steady 70 kmph as I turned right from the goa airport junction to set course for Verna on NH 17b. The 15 km stretch from Vasco to Verna( where it joins NH 66, erstwhile NH 17) is a broad 4 laned road with a divider along the middle and well lit. But I was letting the engine warm up and so was maintaining a sedate 70 kmph. Soon I reached Verna and turned right setting course towards Karwar. I smoothly accelerated to about 100 kmph and began to feel the exhilaration, the sheer pleasure of the CBR250 coupled with the adrenalin pumping because of the way excitement......its a heady mix! The NH 66 is a highway which joins panvel with Kochi and predominantly runs along the west coast. The stretch which passes through Goa is about 100kms long but it 2 laned for most of its length. But the quality of tarmac is excellent. But despite the relatively less traffic, the constant turns and 2 laned road made me restrict my speed to 100. I soon passed Margao and entered the forested minor ghat region to the south of Goa. Here the twists and turns were a real thriller for me being very gentle as compared to real twisties, but a real treat for a beginner like me. I opened throttle to accelerate to 120 kmph , but after having to execute one or two emergency braking maneuvers, due to the nature of the turns and poor depth perception, i slowed down back to about 100 and continued in the dariness. 0230h saw me leave Goa behind and enter the state of Karnataka and very soon I was passing through the' pass through the rock ' entrance to Karwar. This is a really beautiful stretch of road carved through a hill and the 300 odd metre stretch is just about 10 m wide with sheer rock walls on both sides. Another 15 mins saw me well clear of Karwar and the twisties of the hills and soon the character of the road changed. For a large part , the highway in Karnataka is 2 laned , with one side of the road dug up as the widening of the road to 4/6 lane , international standards is going on. But the road is relatively straight and the tarmac quality is good. This 'work in progress' road continues right up to Udupi, from where it changes to a good quality 4 laned highway till Mangalore. I soon revved up and was doing a peppy 120 kmph.
Now the CBR 250R is in its element at 120 kmph. Its arguably its best mile munching speed, because at this speed it effortlessly can run all day long without as much as a groan, and it also has adequate reserve power to surge ahead in tight situations. Further , the nissin ABS brake system packs enough bite to stop her within safe distance even at this speed, and most importantly, she is rock steady without as much as a flutter at 120. My heart was singing , and I was enjoying my ride.
I was also worried on how i would fare in Kerala... With the excellent roads and non existent traffic i was making good speed, but knowing how bad the the tarmac was in kerala and added to the mad rush of constant traffic, i was worried my average speed would reduce drastically. Nevertheless, i put my apprehensions aside and began to enjoy my ride along the beautiful roads of Karnataka. Slowly as the adrenalin reduced, I began to feel the chill of the night breeze cutting through my jacket. After all I had removed the warmth liner. My fingers too started to get cold through the basic pro biker gloves which are frankly summer gloves and not suited for long rides. And after having read t log after t log which emphasised the importance of staying hydrated, I was drinking ors water often. Well the end result- I had to stop at least once every hour. - to relieve myself. It was quite funny, I would keep the bike running , put it on stand, take off my gloves, and move off to the side. After the act I would come back, use the hand sanitiser, put on my gloves, mount the bike and carry on, the whole process not taking more than 3 mins, but once every hour till almost 6 in the morning .
Anyway I was making very good progress and I was totally engrossed in riding. I was quite frankly having the time of my life. Come 0415 ,I realised I had only one bar on the fuel gauge. " Not to worry" I thought," I have at least 80 kms before flame out". And I continued but decided to stop at the next petrol station anyway. And just like many other brilliant plans, mine too started to fall apart , for to my utter dismay, I soon realised that all pumps were closed......lights off. And the ones which had their lights on.... Seemingly had no life..... So I just pushed on but my speed had come down to 60 kmph to conserve as much fuel as my engine could. By 0430 my last bar was blinking and by 0445 I was in a state. Was my journey to end a mere few hours after starting? I quite frankly had not catered to pumps being closed when I had decided to start at 0130. I had driven along many times on this route and I knew there were lot if petrol pumps, but 24 hour pumps...... I just hadn't thought to check. Finally , running out of options, i decided that come the next pump, I would stop ! If it was closed, I would wait till it opened , no matter how long, and then continue my journey . Better late, than flaming out on some lonely stretch of road. So with my mind made up I slowed down as I saw a sign board of a pump. With trepidation I turned into a BP petrol station, the lights were on........ But no sign of life....... I stopped by the side of the dispenser, engine running waiting for some one to appear, no one did. Finally in frustration, I honked ! Now those of you who know the cbr250 would know that she has a throaty horn. But in the silence of the early morning, it was like a shrill cacophony and it pierced through the stillness of the night. I was just about to give up, .....when lo and behold, a door opens and a dishevelled young man asks" how much" in Kannada. " Full" said I with a broad grin. With my tank full I decided to take a break, my bike had been running continuously for more than 3 hours and so had I (save for the su- su breaks). So just outside the pump, I stopped, took off my gloves, helmet, balaclava, and washed my face. I took the first pic after having commenced my journey. I was elated. ......to be continued.......

Coming soon......... The beautiful ride along the ethereal stretch of Trasi beach with the moonlight glistening on the waters of the Arabian Sea, and my utter shock on entering the state of Kerala......

The pump was 20 kms short of Kundapura. And please pardon the shortage of pics, but this being my first trip, and I was more interested in munching miles so I frankly didn't click many, but I promise a treat in pics on kochi and along the way back. : )
