  • The Devil's homecoming ! Bhangarh

    Prelude :

February 18th 2016 : I had a long boring weekend ahead of me. I rang up my friends only to find out that most of them were planning to go home - seemed more like a conspiracy to have me bored to death rather than just being a mere coincidence. Then it dawned upon me - why not take the Devil to visit its family - the haunted fort of Bhangarh. I spoke to my better half and she reluctantly agreed. The stage was set ....

I pray, dear God please protect my ride
And if I lay down my bike today
I pray to God I walk away...
I walk away to ride another day

        February 19th 2016: Gurgaon - Bilaspur

Had a long irritating day at the service center getting the issues of my bike resolved. To some extent they were but yet there was a long way to go in getting it perfectly set up. Nevertheless, by about 5pm my patience was over and I told the mechanic to wrap up the bike – told him I would get the bike back once I am back from the road trip to which he agreed since there were no problems as such with the running of the bike.

Loaded up my carrier and my saddles and I started on my way to Bilaspur (my first stop of the day due to fading light and notorious jams on NH8 post Bilaspur). Had asked my better half to meet me at Bilaspur itself since she was on an official visit to her hotel in Neemrana.

That said and done, was a short uneventful ride to Bilaspur which took me about 30 minutes (~43 kms) from Gurgaon. Whiled away time sitting at the rooftop poolside, had an early dinner and called it in early. As I lay in bed, next to some faint snoring, (hope she doesnt read this blog ) I could not help but think of what Bhangarh held in store – about the stories, about the myths, were they actually a fact? Superimposed on all of this, I could mentally picture my “Devil” grinning wickedly with the thought of visiting home…

(Apologies guys – no pics from here apart from some posing pics while I tested out the camera for any issues)

February 20th 2016: Gurgaon to Alwar

Woke up to a supremely gloomy and windy day. A glance at the watch told me that we had grossly overslept. As against the earlier plan of leaving the hotel by about 9 am, I realized that it was already 930 am and there was no way we could leave before about 11 am - which in other words meant that we would not be visiting Bhangarh today but would be making the run only till Alwar. Booked a hotel (courtesy: Goibibo) called Matsya Aravali for a 1000 bucks accommodation only. Had a quick breakfast and proceeded to check out.

Reached Alwar by about 1500 hrs, the delay being caused by the leisurely number of breaks we were taking, After all we were in no hurry whatsoever.

Finding the hotel was a trifle hard since people, for some vague reason, had no idea as to what I was saying. Nevertheless, found the hotel (took us approx. an hour of hunting) but the moment we saw the hotel any apprehensions that we had were quickly laid to rest. It was a cute little hotel with large rooms which opened out onto a neatly laid garden. It was a perfect stay at this hotel I would say with lovely people and damn tasty food which was super economical at the same time. I would let the pics do the talking about this place.

All this said and done, gorged on a tasty dinner and decided to wrap up for the day. Before I knew it, I could hear soft snores, looked at her and smiled and quietly slipped out of the room for a check on my Devil (as if he would have gone off gallivanting to Bhangarh all by himself). I came back and heard a voice ... Mil aaye apne shaitaan se ? We could not help but burst out laughing !! Finally called it a day .... in the hope of a bright and cool day for tomorrow's ride (however nature had other plans .... )

The weather was getting warmer and warmer each passing minute. Had a lovely cup of tea with a couple of fags and was back on astride my happy devil. Traffic or no traffic did not seem to matter to him. All he seemed to care about was to get home.

Took the off beaten part to see two temples which were standing all alone in the wilderness and all I could do as I saw them was stare at the architectural complexities of them considering the time period that this place was built in.

Moved on exploring paths towards the fort. Not meaning to scare you guys but heard a lot of funny sounds from the vicinity of these temples. I wanted to explore some more BUT was threatened by my partner not to do so. I reluctantly half heartedly moved on.

Ironically in the fort, there were a few chambers which were totally dark and no matter how much I tried with the flash they just would not come out as expected or as wanted in pic. They were always too dark still. Sometimes the flash just did not light up. I was getting more and more freaked out with this. Believe you me I am not kidding about this. I cannot say if this will happen to you or not however I did face this issue.

When we gave up trying to click a pic we decided to call it a day from there since the heat and the crowd was growing in numbers. And its definitely not the kind of crowd you would like to mingle with when you with a female partner - people passing lewd remarks, singing degrading songs etc. Met a couple of guys whom we had passed on the way to Bhangarh who asked us if we belong to Alwar. Upon receiving a negative response they seemed interested and we had a quick conversation over smoke, had a chat over the Jat - Gujjar Andolan which unfortunately caused so much of damage and then moved on. Upon their request we decided to ride together. So now we were three bikes - my Devil, an Avenger and a Splendor.

While we were chit chatting we noticed a small group of guys making lewd gestures and comments at a foreigner lady who seemed pretty oblivious to the entire affair. I asked my partner to go and ask her to be careful while we guys decided to speak to those guys about what the fcuk were they upto. Apparently, the Avenger guy was the brother of a high ranking police official and it was not long before those guys were escorted out in a police gypsy. I mean what the f**k is wrong with the male mentality !!

Anyhow, the ride back to Alwar was quick and uneventful. Returned back to the hotel and bid those guys adieu as they went their way onto the Bharatpur road. The rest of the trip was quiet with not much happening, in fact the hot and humid weather played spoilsport and we had to cut short our plan of going to Silsereh Lake as she was not feeling up to it, so we decided against it.

The next day was the ultimate day .. the day any guy on a tour hopes would never come - the return back home. Took us a flat 3.45 hrs to get from Alwar to Bilaspur and another 35 minutes to get back home to Gurgaon only to know that the Andolan had not had much impact in Gurgaon, to which we were relieved.

              Honest Advice -

              1. Be wary of going to Bhangarh with your better halves guys since you would be subject to obscenities from the local guys
              2. Modon ki Haveli sure has something with it. Its too silent to be true. Take the stairs up and you can feel a presence. It maybe psychic but you definitely feel the presence of someone. Not just me but my partner felt it too when she backed out and I had no option but to back out with her.
              3. Try clicking the pics of the dark rooms in the fort and see if you get them on camera, I was not able to.

I cannot say if the fort is actually haunted or it was the numerous stories we had read / heard about the place since we did not have any equipment to check it out. The ASI does not want to give permission to actually stay even for a few hours post sun down. Not sure if it is a marketing gimmick to preserve the haunted tell tale stories or a fact.

              Find out for yourself...

Hey .. how you doing .. not to you bro.. to the person standing behind you

Nice narration and yes, the ghost stories seem like a marketing gimmick. Try visiting on any weekend, you will find many locals on picnic in the fort garden

Hey .. how you doing .. not to you bro.. to the person standing behind you
                      This line. hahaha.. nice one.

                      Ride safe and have fun.

Thank you sir ji.. Yes we are in the process of shortlisting jackets and we will get them before our next roadtrip.

We currently use the riding armor which we wear under the top layer to avoid any unwanted attention but yes I agree a riding jacket is a better proposition

Thanks bro. Glad could bring a smile on. I also totally agree that it seems more like a marketing gimmick to keep the legend of the place alive since thats the only reason why tourists would come to the place because I can see no other reason.

                          Really a good one.

I am thrilled with the event of your flash not working and pics turning up too dark.

Thanks Souritra ... Yeah that was freaky ... I mean it could well have been the camera malfunctioning but the legend played its role to the hilt.
