  • Day 61 - May 8 - Gangtok to Lachung

    May08 at EveryTrail

    Map created by EveryTrail:GPS Geotagging

Again i got up a bit worried as to where am I, where is my bike?? Its takes a minute to realize where i am. This has been happening since 4-5 days hehe. Today's plan is to sit pretty at Lachung by evening. Knew the distance was around 120 kms, but never know the road conditions and what might dealy and bettor to start early.

But i got lazy and also went to cyber cafe to do some updates. Collecting all the things scattered accross the room and putting it on the bike and was ready to go as late as 11 Am. Thats a good 5 hours lost. The weather was great but post 3 pm it deteriorates around here. Also the approach roads to Gangtok put me in comfort zone. But a bit out of Gangtok and the roads got real narrow, offroads, slush sections, landslide clearances and pretty undulating up and down. Took me like 45 mins for 10 Kms and thought i was in trouble today. Damn the Tata Indicom pathetic service else could have saved the cyber cafe time. Then i quit worrying. Cos i am going to Lachung today what ever time it takes and how ever so just enjoyed the good weather as it lasts.

After crossing a bridge to get to the other side of valley the roads improve and becomes great infact. But still narrow and curvy not giving any great speeds. Today was a thinking day. Thought a lot and thought a lot more riding slowly. Just analyzing the travel life as to how u meet people and go the separate ways. Life, philosophy, the purpose etc etc. Kinda not so happy for couple of hours and then realized i did not want to leave Gangtok hehe. The views around were just great, weather was great and the ride was smooth. The sumos and other vehicles promptly give me a pass. I don't even need to honk all i have to do is ride in thier rear view mirror for a few seconds. But some times i stop for a pic and they pass by and when i start i am again there for the pass. May be bit annoying for them but i cant really ride at their speed. Have lunch before Mangon at a neat place with good parking space. Then it rains a bit!! And i see the sky's pretty ok but its raining. Thought of geting into the rain gear when i have the chance and did so. To my irritation the rain stops and its sunshine. The textile jacket on itself heats up but now with the rain jacket on i was getting cooked inside. But did not want to stop and remove as never know when it rains and it will be waste of time. Approaching Mangon, two guys on a pulsar honk at me to stop. Said they were going to Chungtang and lets go together and can wait a bit a Mangon. Well did not want to take the risk with strangers so declined and went ahead. By now i was thinking will i make it to Lachung in good time.

At mangon by like 2pm. The cop says to get to chungtong soon cos if it rains the roads will be difficult. Well she was right. The road sorry path was all mud and stones. Road under construction. Pretty steep and rocky as well. By now my tank bag is slipping like hell. Thanks to the unwanted wax polish they put on the tank at Guwahati. I was afraid if the tank bag falls, it would rip of the connected fone charger. By now it was hot and the slow speed making me sweat. Some how manage to keep things on the bike and reached chungtong by 3.30. Lachung is just 22 kms from here. Wow i will be home in max an hour. Thanks to the weather i made it in good time i guess. Cos i rmbr a sumo driver at gangtok saying that i would reach only by 5.30 and when it comes to bad roads sumo's are faster than i am.

Now this was a beautiful ride till Lachung with plenty of waterfalls on the way. Not just a few feet hight but few stories higt. The mountains are pretty steep around here. With time in hand and good weather, i rode pretty slow and taking many pictures. If any one loves waterfalls much, should not miss the Chungthong Lachung road. Now seeing the raw beauty of sikkim.

Was wondering should i push till Yumthong for the night. But that would not save me much time any way it would prolly be much colder there. So Lachung it was so that i could catch up some lost sleep of previous days. In Lachung by 4.45 and remember Karzang Lodge from Sparsh's log and went straight looking for it after some asking around i am there. Neat lil cozy room for 250 bux and i take it. No internet around, and my BSNL sim is not giving me gprs and airtel sim which gives does not work here. So was heading out for a small walk in the town, just then the lodge host suggests me to check out the river behind the hotel. I find the path and boy was it a great place. Fast flowing river with light green water and round rocks all around. That place was amazing and got me Euforic. Hard to describe but it was like a small water fall on the other side and towering mountains behind it. To my side of the river it was some rocks and the Lachung town houses and two towering peaks beyond them. There was a high water fall as well!! The peaks playing hide and seak in the mist and clouds. When the sky clears a bit i could see snow caped peaks all around. Boy was the place amazing. Posed for the cam aplenty. Just sat there by the river for a few mins, hearing the flowing noise, and trying to grasp the ambiance around. As it got a bit dark and cold i got back to my cozy room and then the laptop keeps me engaged. By now the rest of the wooden rooms gets occupied by families arriving in Sumo's, i can hear conversations in different languges all around. Kinds contributing their bit by running around the wooden floor. Pah! its ok this does not bother me.

    • Day 62 - May 9 - Lachung 2 YumeSamdong 2 Lachen

      May09 at EveryTrail

      Map created by EveryTrail:GPS Geotagging

I here the 4/4s roaring to life as early as 4.30. They have a schedule, take people to Mt Katao, then Yumthang and then back to Guwahati the same day. Even the Sun's almost out. I am too comfortable under the cozy quilts. I give the alarm a few more snoozes. By the time i am on feet the sun is shining bright at 5.30 am and the weather the best i have seen in the hills so far. Then the guilt of wasting the pleasant weather hits me. I gather all the things as i am not staying there tonight. Reach out far break fast in the hotels pretty dining hall. Dunno for what reason they take their own sweet time in making a cup of maggie. Just impatiently stare through the window waiting to ride out.

Did not really not know what to expect today. Cos was not going to a Pass or a lake or place of interest. With all the time in the world, started riding slowly and what a day i mean what a day. Bright sunshine and vivid blue sky, snow caped peaks have come out of hiding all around. Flowers of different colors have bloomed on either side of the road. I dont think i have ridden a KM without stopping for a pic. The ride till Yumthong was a colourful one with all the flowers beside the road and the Rhododendron trees. Once i reached Yumthong the place opened up to a meadow on the right with the Teesta river flower at the end of it. It was cold winds hitting my neck and face and it was chilling even under bright sunshine. Wanted to get near the river but in no mood to walk that far with helmet or facing the wind. Well what else is the bike for. OffRoaded the uneven meadow till the river bank on the bike it self. It was amazing ambiance out there. There were quite a few yaks grazing away to glory. The Medow littered with small colorful flowers and colorful tourists.

I have the permit till YumeSamdong but whats there ? i don't know. Thought if i make it quick can even check out Mt Katao on the way back. Just 25 kms more to go. After Yumthang the road narrowed down and i see hardly any vehicles compared to the previous stretch. Must say the fear of unknown gripped me. Dunno things were perfect but i felt anxious. The road now not so good at places, and started climbing uo the narrow road/path i could see the whole of the Yumthong valley and the medow as i rode up. See couple of vehicles coming back and i get relieved a bit and also thought i am too late? and i see more of them coming back and i am the only one going back. After endless rough horrid switch backs the road straightens and widens a bit and the views improve. Then here i go clicking away. It was like post 11 and i ditched the Mt katao idea so that i could ride peacefully here. There were no trees now and barren Himalayas it is. Some more wide switch backs climbing the inclined plane?! See these empty bunkers by the 10s. I move ahead and the winds are getting nasty now. My self made neck warmer not holding good and wind sneaking into my helmet. I reach a point where i see lot of 4/4s parked. What? this is it? cant be! then i came to know that a bridge has broken and they cant go ahead. Even my bike cant go cos a path of 60 feet is full of rocks. There is a Zero Point a couple of KMs ahead. Zero Point? End of the road literally it means. Interesting. There is no slush, so i take a pic and get onto it. And boy o boy it was tough. The moment the tire climbs a rock it gives way. I wasnt prepared for the offroad and bike is fully loaded as well. Some how manage it and get on to the road on the other side much to the dismay of the onlookers. Well i made it but have to do it again on the way back.

No one the road ahead. Again i am thinking should i venture ahead. But the weather was great and had time so pushed ahead. Passed couple of Kms and still no end of the road. Well thinking very unbikerly was waiting for end of the road Where i sure reached after 5 kms. The road ended to nothing but gentle inclined plane going up. There was just a Hut made of Yak wool and Plastic tent. That must be the highest hotel in north sikkim. The place was amazing at 15k + feet. All the hills around white quoted with fresh snow from last night it seems. I am hungry and readly gulp the Channa and hot cup of maggie. The winds outside the tent were unbearable. Funny if there are no winds the place aint cold. Few peole take a hike to the near by hill to play on the snow. I have no intention to do that. Its like i am tied to my bike with an invisible rope By 12 i start back. As i could see the southern mountains being engulfed by white clouds and black ones not far from them. The ride back is going to be dull. The sunlight stays till i cross over the broken bridge. Then it gets boring. every thing looks so dull compared to morning and all the snow caped peaks hidden away for the day. Forced to get into rain gear as well.

Thought i would get to Lachen comfortably and rode on. Reached Lachung by 2.30 Pm and i find the BSNL network down. Couldn't call Dad for an update. Then road briskly towards Chungthong so that i could catch the Lachen road. In chungtongh by 3.30 but have some chores like making extra copies of permit to be submitted ahead, fone call. No fones!! Not only the network is down even land lines are not working! The only way is to get to Mangan 30 KMs away! Really dont want to ride there with that horrible road section. I cant even if i want cos there is a land slide just beyond Chung thong. With no choice i hit the Lachen road. But wait i min should i not refuel? went back looking for a fuel bunk and their aint one in the impartant hub of north Sikkim! Now i dont have enough fuel to go the gurdongmor and come back. None of the shops had fuel, people gave different suggestions and all the sources turned negative, near by Brigade at pegong did not have and so did the couple of towns towards mangan. They just had Diesel. At a deisal pump, a guy said that near Lachen i will definetly find fuel which is being sold unofficially at CWC. He gave assurance. Well atleast i will be heading towards Gurdongmor so i started. It was a nice ride as well but marred mood out as i could not call and uncertainity about fuel.

Reached the CWc after 20 kms and the guy over there promptly said no fuel. This is getting ridicules. He gave suggestions of a town ahead or State Intelligence Beuro, who have a petrol jepsee. I went ahead to the Choten town and you guessed it no fuel. Went ahead and requested a army Brigade 2 kms before Lachen for fuel. They had strict rules about giving fuel so they can help. But was offered to stay there, and get the fuel from Mangan the next day. Well that did not do any good so politely declined and continued. I knew the army stay would not be available to me when i need it and now i get when have other things on priority. Any way reached Lachen 6.30 and got negative at SIB too. Boy are the hotels expensive there. 800 1000 crap. Then a person guided me to Lutong Hotel which was under construction. Dint feel like staying there but the room it self was good. So houled up there for 300 bux. Even the hotel owner tried her best to get fuel from her know sources. She was expecting a petrol jipsee that evening with whome i could request. But i know that there is a land slide and the jipsee cant make it. Man this is really fraustrating. I just have 70 kms of fuel and i need atleast 6 liters to make it to gurdongmor and back to Mangan. With current holding i can only go back to mangan 6o kms away. One guy said i can get fuel at ITBP at Thangu 30 kms north. But if i dont get there then i will be stuck! Not knowing what to do, i just put an alarm for 5Am and went to sleep. Man what a contrast between the Euforian in the morning and fraustration int he evening!

      • Day 63 - May 10 - Lachen 2 G'D'mor 2 ToongCheckPost!

        May10 at EveryTrail

        Map created by EveryTrail:GPS Geotagging

The Alarm wakes me up and i was depressed at the thought of skipping gurdongmor or should i get too adventures and try my luck at Thangu. Just as i walked out i see the Black Jipsee. Wow something working in my way. But not so fast cos still have to request and have to acknowledged. Patiently get through with preparations and waited for the builder to wake up. The hotel owner has already requested but she has been told in negative.

When i woke up i went and told about my journey and problem and he understood well. The gentle man agreed to give me 3 ltrs. Thought that should be fine get me to the lake and some distance back. Will ride i neutral if i have to cos it will be down hill coming back. The driver by mistake drains out 4 ltrs. And pours it into my bike any way. The Builder Gentleman does not even take money for the fuel! I thank him a lot and get going. Moving all the luggage to the room and taking only needed things int he panniers. Yes i can reach Gurdongmor today. Now i have never been commuter like fuel conscious before. Now i plan to keep the revs under 3k and ride as much high gear as possible. Get into neutral as soon as i get a downward incline. But the roads are only getting worst. I need to keep the momentum to save fuel but the speed is jerking me and shaking the panniers a lot. Try hard to find a balance. The scenery is breathtaking around. But the bad road makes the concentrate more on the roads than around. I was even told to hurry cos the army may not allow further if its too late or weather gets bad. I even have to hurry. Man i wish i could ride peacefully like yesterday. Make very few stops. The road gets to horrendusness. Now i am above the tree lines and with the bare mountains. I reach the Army check post at Gaigong and a cafe at the height of 15 thousand feet. One soldier was wondering if should take permission to allow motorcyle? the other said he has permission let him go. I breathed a sigh relief. Plus there was lot of 4/4s ferrying tourists and the weather was spliendid just like yesterday.

Now i am free to go to the lake 17 kms ahead. And soon i get to the high altitude planes with wide open spaces which i dreamed of riding for few years now. Not to the scale of More planes but big enough to give the feel. There were quite a few tracks and vehicles picking their own. I ate dust from overtaking 4/4s in straight paths but when there is a junction there is none to ask! Lot of loose tracks suddenly branches to the right from the main track going to bunker. Yes have to take them cos i see a couple of 4/4s far away raising dust. Fair enough i take them too. The track looks smooth and 100kmph ones from far but when u get on it, its very unbikerly with all loose gravel and sand. Ride to the speed when supports two wheels. Stop quite some times to click around. Standing in the middle of the plane with no one around was just amazing. Always wanted to feel that. Got to go ahead. Quite confusing with so many branching of tracks. Only to be reassured when i see a sign board to the lake. Soon we have to climb at steep incline. Could see the Gurdongmor baba temple above and have to do the climb at 17000 feet. Chugging and struggling my bike makes it up the rough boulder'y incline in first gear. And behold there it is the High altitude lake with vivid blue clour amongst the surrounding snow clad mountains. Went berserk with the cam. The army were giving free tea/biscuits and hot water for free. Lot of tourists vehicles and typical questions flow. The lake is some 40 feet below and its like we are on a platform on the bank. I see a track on the other side going down to the lake. Asked a soldier if i can go there. He said sure why not since i came from so far away but see if u make it.

For that i had to get down the incline and do a water crossing on with huge rocks. Was wonder should i go through the exertion at that altitude? but no thinking only riding. It was tough i must say almost gave my legs cramps. But i made it across keeping my shoes dry. Now another painful steep climb and finally i got down to the lake level with the bike. Felt great being there. Of course the poser in me not far behind. wanted to spend more time there. But could see clouds gathering on the southern skies. Have to leave the paradise now. Wanted to ride back before the last of the 4/4s leave. You know just to be on the safer side. As i reach the plane, 4/4s zoom ahead of me from either side. The drivers are in real hurry to get back. They know that come afternoon the weather deteriorates. Reach Gaigong to collect my original permit. The soldiers wanted a chat with me and asked me to sit for a while. They gave me a hand full of dryfruits, a chocolate and Fruitjuice! They have this awesome neckwarmers. Boy do these army folks get good quality stuff.

Start the climb down and i get hit by small gains of sand. sand? no no its the snow or ice rather. They were so hard that they simply bounced of me. Soon it got more and is got down a bit water droplets. Well it will be raining at lower altitude so i get into my rain gear. Its also getting late like 2 pm. have to negotiate all the bad roads with bad weather and save fuel as well. This time even offroads i get down with just the breaks to save fuel. Thats a lot of mid work. The bad roads taking a toll on my body as well. Nearing lachen i just hoped that there was network so that i could call my dad and rest for the day. But not luck no network yet. Boy did i want to stay back and rest. But could not keep my dad in suspense for second straight day without saying i am ok. Was too much worried about him worrying about me. So cursing the BSNL i prepared to ride down. Had maggie and started by 4. Reached Chungtong by 4.30 with my bike giving amazing mileage and i still had around 50 kms of fuel left. Thanks to all the enjine off, neutral and highgear and low rpm riding. Just wondering how much i can save on fuel if i think in those lines . Should take around 2.5 hours to get to mangon right? Well what do ya know reaching chungtong i came to know that here is another land slide just before shingik! Boy! common some 1 is really conspiring against me. cant stay there cos no network. I head that i can get network near the landslide area. But i have no fuel to go there, come back and go to mangan again. And there is no place to stay there!!! But gave priority to make the call and road down to uncertainty. one guy told there is an army camp before the landslide. Hoping for that i rode down.

Got the faint signal and called dad. Now i was relieved and have only to find a place to stay for the night. As i ride ahead just seeing at houses etc so that i can ask for a place to stay in case i cant cross. Reach the blockade and quite a line up of 4/4s full with tourist waiting for the crossing. The folks tell me that even a bike cant cross cos a bulldozer as the blocked he way and broken down. Could have crossed had i made it an hour back! Wow just wow. I did not find any army camp. Did not want to ride up to chungtong with the unstable section. Just asked quite a few houses if i could stay with them. But negative. One house the guys said i could stay, but it was the only house around for KMs so dint feel like staying there. As i ride slowly back its dark at 7.15 and its raining and even mist to add to the fun. Strangely i was not afraid! Even was considering couple of road side shelters to stay!! Then i reach the Toong police check post and told about my travel and my current predicament. Inspector Pema Bhutia decided to help and gave me a room near the check post. He said there is nothing in the room. I was like, its ok, just give me a place to lie down! was that dead tired. He become a real good host and gave me a couple of quilts. WOw a private room and cozy quilts what else does one need. He even took me to the near my hut hotel for some food. They have only maggie. Hey that will surely do.

Get back tot he room and stand outside and it was really great feeling staying at the place in the night where i could here the roaring river just behind the check post complex. Then i see few 4/4s coming. Did the road open? Naa they had just transshipped passengers across the blockade! Then i crash for the day, with the whole body aching.

          May11 at EveryTrail

Had a good night's sleep at an unlikely place. Not sure what to do. Just lazed on the psedo bed. It was fun walking around early morning. Even brushed my teeth fromt he water off a pipe fed by a mountain stream. Got bitten by these tiny insects. They are all over like mosquitoes but very very small and bite is sharp. cant even see them. Have maggie at the same hut hotel and thank Mr Pema and start by like 9.30. Reach the land slide area there was lot of slush. Man no slush. Then i see a pulser guy coming from the other side, who made it neatly and just when i was taking the same track, the 4/4s behind him started coming. Well i have to wait till all the vehicles from that side have passed. They were really struggling to cross the make shift path. Now our turn a Scorpio over took me and took the track which i intended to take and he got stuck! Thank you! Then i took other track from the center and crossed it and even the make shift path. Reached mangan and filled the tank to the brim phew! Now was thinking should i stay at Mangon and rest or head to pelling or Darjeeling or Gangtok. Felt like partying at Gangtok so i ride out to Gangtok. Not so cool as have to cross some real bad sections before Gangtok.

Reached Gangtok by 12.30. Met Raman at his book store for few mins and headed back to the same hotel Kanchan Residency and even got the same room. Just slept for some time relaxing.

Me with Inspector Pema Bhutia, who gave me shelter for the night...

Now who would get to stay for the night in the middle of the forest

Me with another cop from the check post at the break fast...

          The happy kid there...

          The humble hotel...

The was a great acco considering the situation and even other wise was very comfy

Gangtok not so easy have to do some circus...

This is the land slide section...

Have to wait till all of em cross over this side...

Me across and some curious kids...

          White tops on green mountains...

          A small break...

          yes more water falls...

          more slush

This road will always keep seeing work i guess...

          Gangtok the city on hills...

It was again party in in the evening at Live@Loud pub to some great live music..

                              • Really amazing stuff! I really do not have words to even closely describe what I felt when I read saw through all that. The ride, the landslides, the numerous waterfalls, Seven sisters, the eternal quest for fuel when one starts running low, the generousity of the "Builderman" who pours out 4L instead of 3 and does not even ask you for money, and that takes you to the lake at 5139 metres, that is higher than Pangong if my memory serves me right, all those poles sticking to the side of the lake, the ride through the plains where the Sumos race and those plains can easily be mistaken for the More plains, the "hotel" in Blue canvas, your frustration and cursing at the BSNL network failing, little school kids in lovey green pleated skirts in sleepy towns, it was an amazing ride that you conveyed to us. Thanks enormously for this sharing.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!
