• Weekend rides from Bengaluru

Well, I am trying to put my weekend ride experiences in one thread. I live in Bengaluru and own an Thunderbird 350.

Let's start:

Bengaluru to Ooty:

Persons: 2 (Akhil and me).
Bikes: 2 (TB350 and Apache RTR 160)
Luggage: 2 backpacks tied to back seats of each bike with bungee cords.
Kms covered: 700 kms on 2 days
Route: Bangalore- mandya-mysore byepass- gundlupete-bandipur-masinagudi-Ooty-Connoor and back same route.
Days: 2 (12-13March 2016)

I was dying to go on a long(ish) trip on my TB since I was done with my 2nd free service. But I am a little reluctant to go solo because of the tube tyres of RE(duh !) , in case of puncture I wanted to have a back-up rider.

But since I live in such a circle of peace loving friends and roommates, it was hard to find a like minded rider(kinda crazy). Finally, I managed to get hold of my college friend Akhil who is sort of crazy, but a risky rider as well. I gave him a mouth full of advice first about safe riding and safety of others on the road.

So it was decided that he will come down to my apartment on the friday, 11th and we will leave by 3AM on saturday.

But as it happens in all over the world's plans, the other guy arrived at 12 in the midnight and we could manage only 2 hours of sleep from 1-3 AM.

Alarm rang, and by the time we could tie our luggage and get ready to leave, it was already 4:10 am.

Cursing him, I withdrew some cash(my bad !) and after taking few clicks from phone cameras, we left by 4:30 am from marathahalli. I being the responsible guy, had to decide on the route, fuel stop etc. I decided to take the city route since it would be empty in the morning.

Here are the clicks before leaving:

Our first stop was at McDonald's just before Maddur. It was 6:10 am and I was riding carefully to let Akhil follow me(thankfully) as I had given him strict warning not to run away

McD was not open at that time and we decided to eat breakfast at adjacent Kamath since they were preparing hot wadads.

After having breakfast and loo break, we started with a target to reach Mysore bye-pass by 8:30 so that we can reach Ooty by 11.

The accident:

As we were nearing mandya, traffic was heavy, but moving at decent speed. I was following 4 cars in back-to-back formation and behind me was a 10 wheeler truck. Suddenly, at a median, the front car leading the motorcade, turns slightly, and brakes hard, seems he was unsure whether to turn or not. All the 3 cars behind also braked hard, and the alto in front of me hit the car in his front and broke their bumpers. I followed the suit and the infamous brakes of RE(mine are both discs though) made the rear wheel lock. I hit alto at 20 kmph Nothing happened though, neither did the alto driver noticed as he was himself surprised at the happenings. I was more worried about the container truck following me and he also braked hard and stopped some 6 feet behind me(Thank you, truck brakes ).

Then starts the road rage in the mid of highway, and I carried on without bothering.

We reached Mysore bye-pass by 8:50 AM, behind out schedules and could notice numerous riders heading towards Ooty/Wayanad.

We carried on and as we left the Mysore byepass after 17 kms(yes it is 17 km long). Under construction section of road starts. It continued till further 10-12 kms and slowed us down. After it got over, roads are a breeze all the way till Ooty.

We were doing 100 continuously for next 30 kms or so, and then stopped for a butt-cum-tea break before begur.

Enjoyed this at the ta stall:

After this, we crossed gundlupete and sometimes later, Bandipur. As the forest inside Bandipur was burnt deliberately for some 20 m on both sides of roads, we could see ash and autumn on full swing with bald trees.

We could only see herd of deer and monkeys, nothing apart from that in the name of wildlife.

After this, the ride was the best I have ever had. 36 hairpin bends and gaining substantial amount of height with each of them ! I had done this stretch before, but by cars. Trust me, it is a lifetime experience riding on these.

Couldn't take a picture as I was busy enjoying the experience.
At 30th curve, Akhil's bike refused to pull. So we decided to take a short break to allow cool the engine. After sometime, I told him to take it easy and we carried on. We reached Ooty at 12 noon and reached our stay Hotel Darshan, just in front of Ooty lake.

We took bath and had dinner at Hyderabadi biryani and decided to sleep for sometime. In the evening, we visited botanical garden, and had dinner and slept. Few clicks:

So we started our journey back and just after exiting Ooty, we were intercepted by rain. We waited for 30 mins in first halt. And then started the descend of hairpins. I had turned off my engine and came all the way back down in this condition.

As we entered Bandipur, rain struck hard and it was pouring down for next 2 hours. There goes the plan of reaching Bangalore by 6. After wasting 2 hours straight in an abandoned shade at Karnataka-Tamilandu border, we decided to move on after covering our bags with plastic. We were not carrying any rain gear with us, so were getting drenched.

Accident 2:

I was doing 70-80 kmph in rain and there was a slope in the forest. I was following an innova. Suddenly came a speed breaker and as I was trying to overtake the vehicle, it braked for the speed breaker. I followed, and the dreaded wheel lock strikes ! Wet road, wheel lock, vehicle in front and 2 feet deep shoulder on each side filled with rocks, perfect ! Tried releasing and re-applying rear brakes in order to overcome the wheel lock didn't help and I was not trying to apply front discs harder as I didn't want it to lock either and fall down at 50kmph.

I skidded while maintaining my balance(thanks to 200kg bike) for a good 50 meters and when I realized that I am not gonna stop without hitting the Innova, I decided to get bike off road and swerved to the right and thud ! into 2 feet rocky ditch. The bike and I didn't fall down, thanks to my experience riding for long and even longer legs . Nothing serious happened thankfully, and we continued back.

After this, nothing much happened and we reached Bangalore by 9 PM .

That's all folks, thanks for reading !

Nice weekend ride buddy.

"And then started the descend of hairpins. I had turned off my engine and came all the way back down in this condition."

A word of caution though. Kindly do not ride downhill in neutral. Engine braking would help you to control the bike better when riding downhill (engine braking). Sometimes, the brakes could heat up very much and could fail.

Keep the (weekend) rides coming brother.

Thanks buddy, I am very much aware of it Wanted to test once, that's y. I even saw another Thunderbird behind me almost losing control and jumping off the cliff, maybe because of brakes or their diverted attention. Somehow they managed to save themselves.

Will update the wayanad log soon, maybe this weekend.

Travelogue 2: Bengaluru to Wayanad

Ok guys, I am back with another travelogue to wayanad. It's been 2 weeks since ooty trip now and I was already craving for another trip on my TB350.

There was a long weekend coming up(Holi/good friday weekend) and my roommate Akshay was very eager to do a long trip. He has a FZ and he is not a touring soul, but somehow seeing me going on trips, he wanted to do a long ride, but was doubtful of his bike's capabilities. So he asked me to suggest a place, and I uttered GOA ! He hesitantly readied for Goa because he has never been to goa before, and hell it's a bike ride to his destination.

I warned him of the distance(650 km One way) and he enthusiastically readied without giving it a thought. But over the next 3-4 days, his spirit gave up and he was reluctant to do such a long ride. Good for me, because I didn't want to tag along a non-spirited and inexperienced rider with me on such a long trip.

So, finally after almost cancelling the ride plan, we finalized Wayanad because one of our common friends(Rahul) is from Calicut and he asked us to come to wayand even though there won't be very good places to visit during summer. So our third roommate -Aditya who owns a TB350 too, but is reluctant to go on longer rides - decided to join us. I nodded because I haven't been to wayanad before and wanted to see the place even in off season, plus it was an ideal distance to ride with the the inexperienced riders.

People: 3 (Aditya, Akshay and I)
Bikes: 3 (TB350, TB350 and FZ)
Luggage: Backpacks tied to back seats of 2 bikes
KMS Covered: 600 By bike and 200 By car in and aroud Sultan bathery - 3 days
Route: Bangalore -Mandya - Mysore Byepass - Gundlupete - Bandipur - Sultan bathery and back
Dates: 3 (25-27th march, 2016)

This travelogue will have very few clicks as we roamed mostly by car in wayanad and could take only a few clicks on the way.

So it was the morning of Friday and I was aware of the traffic that gets on Mysore road by morning, didn't want to repeat the mistake of Ooty ride and since I was well aware of the route now, decided to leave at max by 3:15 AM.

Alarm rang at 2:30, and the other two crocs were well awake(surprisingly !). Took bath and we were ready to tie our luggage by 3 AM, so far so good ! As always, I had to tie the luggage on both the bikes(TBs) and we were ready to leave by 3:15, bingo !

Time for some customary clicks:

So we left and pulled our way till harder and reached wonderla entry in some 50 mins. Stopped for a quick tea there and I cross checked the other bike's luggage for any loose ends. All seemed good. We carried on and it was a bliss cruising at 80-90 in the dark on almost empty mysore road in moon light.

Believe me, it was pure bliss. I had never experienced a ride like that even on best of the roads.

Other 2 guys were pulling hard to my surprise and we reached Mandya without stopping. The fuel gauge showed lower levels on my bike and I pulled over for a quick fuel-cum-pee break.

After that, we reached Mysore bye-pass at 6:10 AM(not bad !). We did 157 kms in 2 hours and 50 mins, pretty impressive figure for Mysore road(at least for me :P). Sun was about to rise and we couldn't find a place to eat, so we carried on. Stopped again after some 5 kms for clicking sunrise pics.

We started again after a 10 min break and just after crossing the bye-pass, the bad roads started. We pulled over some 10 kms later to have breakfast at some punjabi dhaba. Had hot idli-wadas and tea there. We could see some bikes already on their way to Ooty/wayanad parked there. Always happy to see fellow bikers

As we were about to leave from there, I noticed a lot of engine oil leaking and accumulated on the engine cap and attracting dust. I checked the level and it showed normal. Not a big sign of worry, and we left for our destination, Sulthan bathery.

The next stop was after taking a right from Gundlupete, towards SB, to check on the route from there. It showed a straight roue, no need to worry. We entered Bandipur and then started the amazing forest. This part of the forest was better and greener than the Ooty side. As we enetered Kerala, forest got denser and more greener. It was pure bliss to ride and the roads were good, too.

We reached Sulthan bathery at 10 AM and waited for Rahul, he was 20 mins away. There was considerable heat and a procession of Good friday was going on, we watched that by that time

After that we went to our homestay, took bath and had lunch at hotel Wilton. This was the best food I have ever had in entire south India, it was so good. As a result, we had all our lunch/dinner at this place during next 3 days.

We went on to visit Edakkal caves later in the day and came, had dinner and slept our asses off.

Next day, We roamed entirely by Rahul's car and didn't get our bikes out. Visited Banasurasagar dam and other places were not interesting since it was summer.

On sunday, we had planned to leave by 7 am as to avoid the rush on Mysore road on sunday evening. The guys co-operated well and we left by 7:10 . Got lost because of google maps and lost some 30 mins in finding our way back.

After this, we pulled hard and Didn't take much stops as we wanted to have lunch at home. So it happened and we reached home in Marathahalli by 2 PM.

It was a good trip and I was surprised by the punctuality of other 2 riders. Wile returning, it was extremely hot and I decided to refrain from riding in sun for next trips

So that's it guys, thanks for reading ! I will be back with travelogues of shorter 1 day trips of Sravanabelagola and Mekedatu very soon

Thanks, krishna77. Absolutely right, I am gaining more confidence to be able to do the longer rides, possibly solo. I have targeted this winter for a ridiculously long ride like Rajasthan/Guj or Leh next year, just waiting for weather and my confidence to get better
