A solo ride to "Scotland of India", Kodagu.

Hello to all my fellow members of XBHP. This is Vivek from Chennai and I would like to share my solo ride experience from Chennai to Madikeri and back. This is my very first travelogue in XBHP and I'll try my level best to narrate this travelogue as interesting as possible. As a matter of fact, I have little to no knowledge when it comes to writing. So, kindly bear with me. I'll gradually try to improve in my future travelogues.

    The Plan:

"There's no smoke without fire", would be an ideal proverb for my situation. It's been almost a year since I made a long drive with my beast, Thunderbird 350. Last year in the month of June, I rode all the way from Chennai to Munnar in order to get a hands on experience of the Western Ghats. It's been a while and I haven't made any long journeys since then. This march, I switched to a new company with a more relaxed working environment. Thus, a leisure environment had exposed me to several forums. I spend a considerable amount of time in searching for the correct destination for my next ride. Just like any other biker or a tourer, I too wanted to get LEH'd. But, I'm still an amateur. I know that I would need a vast knowledge to understand the complexity of executing such a huge task. When I asked other riders, who have made it all the way to Ladakh advised me to get used to the driving. I was advised to cover all kind of roads as much as possible and to be prepared for the next big thing. I just wanted take an additional leave along with the weekend that followed by the Independence Day. Since I did not plan anything, I returned to office canceling my leave. My Team Leader asked me "You asked for a leave, right?" and I told things did not go as planned. It also made me to think, "Shouldn't I be planning for a ride?".

I would like to add a context to this story. That would be my new "spartan proteus riding pants". I just got them two days back and it made me to plan for a solo ride. All these thoughts occurred within few seconds and I asked my Team Leader whether I can get leaves on Thursday and Friday. His reply was "You need two days from this week? Well, I gotta check with others and will let you know". So, I was certain that I'll get a three day weekend minimum. If it's a four day weekend, then it's a bonus. Didn't think of leaving South India, as 4 days are feasible only to cover places in the four states down south. My choices were minimal, I had three options. Rameswaram, Hampi and Coorg. Rameswaram, because I simply love Dhanushkodi and this is the place I had always wanted to visit but due to unforeseen circumstances, I couldn't make it. Hampi, because of it's Heritage. Coorg, for the weather.

Two reasons I wanted this plan to be executed without a miss:
    1. The Riding Pants.
    2. I informed my TL regarding the leaves, If I fail to take them, he may not consider my leaves in future.

With the above things taken into consideration, I also had my Thunderbird serviced. It was doing all good but the only problem I had was a chain noise. As suggested by the RE mechanics, I changed my Chain Sprocket. That didn't do any good. Also, I was advised to use Chain lube oil every once in a while. That didn't resolve the problem either. I walked to the service center and explained my problem for the umpteenth time. I finally had it resolved. But I didn't get a response when asked what's causing this problem. Since I told the mechanic that I'm going for a long drive, he added an alternate clutch cable in case of emergency and thanked him for that.

    Destination Coorg

I got an approval from my TL on Wednesday, that I can go ahead with my leaves as planned. As soon as he said that, I started preparing for a trip to Rameswaram. The routes were familiar to me and I also get constant updates from the fellow travelers. However, the only thing did not gel well with the plan was an accommodation.Rooms were either full or not available for single. Called few hotels and just wanted to ensure a reservation but most of them were rude and did not answer my query at all. That was not a good start at all. It may seem funny, but if the response is too bad I don't go along with that. Hence, I dropped my plan to Rameswaram. Didn't think about any other places other than Kodagu, formerly called as Coorg. Remember, all this happened on Wednesday evening, just a day before my journey. Coorg wasn't that difficult to plan. All it took was just 15 minutes to sketch the routes and places to be visited. Found an awesome deal at GoIbibo, which was 50% lesser than the original price. Booked the rooms and all set for the ride.

    Why Solo?

This is a million dollar question, that you will come across your friends and family. Why would you go all alone driving to a place that you've never been or at least that needs to be enjoyed with friends? Yes, that's a pretty valid question. But, how many of them are ready to go for a road trip? Most of them would back off, if I say them that, it's going to be a bike tour. Also, to be honest, I'm tired of traveling in trains and buses. It's boring. Also, when you go for a solo ride, you're not dependent. You don't have to worry about another fellow driver. You can drive at peace. I know my body and mind. So I always push myself above the average, but I can't do this if I have a fellow rider with me that could lead to devastation, if something goes out of proportion. So, that's why I always prefer going solo. I guess, I've made my introduction part. I'll narrate my complete travelogue once my thread gets approved. For now, let the pictures speak for itself.

    Yours truly

Good ride, there! I am always planning for solo trips on my TB, but am a bit hesitant because of fear of punctures in the middle of nowhere. Just curious, did you get any punctures during the ride ? Bring on the rest of the ride details soon.

Thank you so very much for approving my thread. I could've uploaded plenty of other good pictures that was shot through out the journey but I had a hard time with my computer due to a glitch. Hence, I'd have to restrict myself with 3-4 pictures.

            The Journey

So, I had my room booked in advance. I got taken care of my bike after being serviced. The travel routes are planned. Informed my parents that I'd be leaving in the early hours of dawn. Also, I had my bike fueled to the brim. My father told me that tomorrow is an auspicious day and I need to perform some rituals before I start. I wasn't hesitant since that's the only ritual I perform in a calendar year. Packed my things. It was 45 past 10 at night and I wanted to crash down as early as possible. But as a rider, we all know the fact that we can't sleep with peace when you have a great day ahead of you. I tried my best to refrain thinking from the ride that I'm about to undertake, so that it would possibly help me shutdown my eyelids. I remember looking at my mobile around 11PM. Then came the alarm exactly at 4AM. I normally don't tend to respond to alarms that goes off too early. I would take my time to turn it off. But, this wasn't the case on that day. TRINGGGG! I'm all awake. Fresh, enthusiastic. Was very excited as I'll be conquering the highways. Performed my rituals. Mounted my bag and tied my baggage with rope. My father wanted to ensure, I've tied them correctly so that it wouldn't cut loose during the course of my journey. He checked and certified stating "All good".

Since that was the first time I'm wearing a Riding Pant, I spent sometime in front of the mirror to see how I actually look. Had my jackets and gloves on . By the time I had my gears all over me, I was sweating like a pig. My mom clicked a picture of mine. Bid my parents bye. Crank!!!! The engine is up and running and here I go!.

Day 1: Chennai to Madikeri - 613 Km

It was exactly 6 AM when I left my home. I live in a place called New Perungalathur, which is a suburb located 30 Kms away from the city. Went straight ahead and rode all the way to Outer Ring Road, that would lead me all the way towards Ponamallee, whichconnects the Bangalore highway. Took my phone and updated the status in Facebook that I'll be traveling to Coorg as I didn't mention my destination before. I continued further towards the highway. The first phase of the Chennai-Bangalore highway is the most difficult, irritating road to ride on. That is from Ponamallee to Ranipet which comes close to a distance between 80-90 Kms. It's a two-lane road on either sides and for most part of the stretch has only patches and nothing else. This has been the state of the Ranipet-Ponamallee stretch for more than half a decade. It could be even longer than that. You can't drive straight or at a consistent speed since you'll end up running over the patches which in turn will remind you that "You too have spines". Nobody knows why this has not been taken care of. I know hundreds of people who raised complaints about this stretch but it's still the same. All we can do is "Let's live with that". Since it's the early hours, I need to encounter several dozen trucks evading the city, company buses lined up in several numbers competing against each other and few other personal vehicles that's moving towards the west.

I couldn't exceed 60 Km/hr. If I try to exceed, I'll end up getting stuck in between two trucks. I see the sun slowly rising up. You may call me an absurd but I ain't gonna lie. I did not enjoy the sight of the sunrise because I was worried about the scorching heat that I'll have to bear through. Nevertheless, that was not the case. I crossed the Pennalur toll gate and the truck traffic had subsided. Till now, I haven't opened my mouth not even for the sake of shouting at a pedestrian who jumps the signal or with a MTC bus driver for rash driving. I started humming of this song "tere sang yaara" from Akshay Kumar's Rustom which I had watched twice. I had this whole lyrics by-heart. The roads were getting better and I gradually raised my throttle and I was averaging 80 Km/hr. In a quick span of time, I crossed Ranipet. After crossing the toll, there's a restaurant called "Sai Sangeet". I stopped by for a breakfast. Had 2 idly's, Onion Dosa, Vada kari and a coffee.

Back on track after a moderate breakfast. The bad patches are over and now I was literally cruising in the Chennai-Bangalore highway. As the riders sometimes say "Knife on a butter like roads", phrase would be very much suitable to describe my scenario. I was comfortably doing the three digit speeds as the highway was empty. Absolutely no vibrations, I felt like I was cruising and not rushing. Crossed Vellore- Ambur - Vaniyambadi within minutes. Yes, there are always some imbeciles that you need to encounter.
I'm no exception in this case. There was a cross over somewhere between Vaniyambadi- Krishnagiri. There was this guy must be in his late 20's driving a splendor was waiting to cross the junction. I saw him from a long distance, I gradually slowed down my vehicle thinking that he may cross anytime. But added to my surprise and frustration, this guy crossed the road in a zig-zag manner. He could've crossed to the other corner and then could've proceeded in the opposite direction. But he didn't want to do that. He made a cut from the junction to the place where I was driving. I had to apply my brakes and thank god we did not come in contact with each other. I stopped, I couldn't resist. I blasted with all the words that I've learnt from my childhood in addition to the words that I've seen in Tarantino films. He would have been hit very badly, if I had failed to apply my brakes at the right time. He apologized and crossed the road. I didn't want to prolong that session either. Drove for few more kilometers and attended the nature's call.

To be honest, Chennai-Bangalore highway is an absolute delight to drive. Be it a car or a two wheeler, you're going to enjoy every moment of it. (Ranipet stretch is excluded though). It's not something unusual to see the cars that race past you when maintain the speed over 100 km/hr but you will be astonished to see a TNSTC racing past you in that speed. The Hosur-Chennai bound by pass rider would've exceeded 120 Km/hr for sure. Crossed Krishnagiri. Had to stop to inform my friend that I'm inching close towards Hosur. After seeing my Facebook status, one of my friend who stays in Bangalore wanted to join with me for a ride and he had sent me a text to call him after reaching Hosur. I spoke to him stating that I'll reach Bangalore in another hour or so and I had my rooms booked at Madikeri, so that he can join along. He told me to proceed further towards Madikeri, as he needs to check with his boss regarding the permission. Hence, I told him to join with me anytime at Madikeri.

Crossed Hosur and I knew that I got to catch the NICE road to exit from Bangalore. Came near the toll gate and I was surprised to see that two wheelers had to pay the toll as well. I'm sorry, I may sound ignorant. I've never been on a motorcycle to any other state than TN, Kerala, Karnataka and AP/TL. I know there's a toll fee for 2-wheelers to use the elevated road from the Electronic City but not this one. Anyway, not an issue. To exit Bangalore city and to join the Mysuru road, I was charged 35 INR. Not bad though. By 11:30 AM I would have crossed the city. NICE road is truly a blessing in disguise for the commuters in Bangalore. One need not crawl through the congested stretches and instead can use this road to land into the respective locality. NICE road is indeed a boon for tourists as well. The maintenance was too good. Being brought up in the congested city of Chennai, which lacks the basic infrastructure to handle the traffic I know what it means for the motorists. Kudos for the proper maintenance of NICE road.

Kept progressing in the Mysuru-Bangalore highway. The roads became narrow, the traffic level was high from moderate. Yet, I managed to keep the speed past 70 km/hr. Saw this word "KAMAT". One of my favorite food chain of restaurant's to which my dad takes me when I was in Hyderabad 14 years ago. I wanted to have a heavy lunch at Kamat. Was able to spot one in Ramnagara. But unfortunately, did not manage to get hold of a seat. I did not want to waste any time on this and found a restaurant opposite. Had a sumptuous South Indian meal at that restaurant and kept cruising towards Mysuru. I had to go via Mandya- Srirangapatna - Mysuru and then towards Hunsur. Mysur- Bangalore highway was relatively better, since it was a weekday. I couldn't imagine what would've been the scenario if it was a weekend.

Crossed Mandya and was on the verge of crossing Srirangapatna bridge. The view was scintillating that I couldn't resist myself in clicking a picture. Saw the maps, just 15 Kms before entering Mysuru the maps told me that I can actually bypass Mysuru and join the same highway. As a result, it would also reduce my journey by 20 Kms. There are no boards indicating the detour. Yet, I managed to take that route with the help of few locals who guided me. It is the industrial estate of Srirangapatna. Roads were good at some parts and horrible at other parts. After doing an off road biking, joined the same NH-275 that took me all the way towards Hunsur. Stopped at Hunsur for a quick break and pulled a smoke. (Smoking is injurious to health). Found a Royal Enfield showroom opposite to the shop where I stopped. It was almost 3 PM and I still need to travel for another 100 Kms to reach Madikeri. My body showed some signs of discomfort. My right shoulder started to pain as I kept driving in the same position. So was my bums. But despite all these discomforts, I did not feel a pain in my spine. I normally get back pain if I have a rough day at my office. I later realized that it was due to my sitting posture that causes the back pain and not because of driving.

Crossed Kushal nagar, there's a change in the landscape. I no longer see the sun. The terrain is different. Those curvy roads were sexy. Stopped every now and then, took some pictures. By the time I was inching closer to Madikeri, it started drizzling. The showers were very mild and you wouldn't feel anything. It was very pleasant to drive in those wet conditions. Reached Madikeri at last and spotted "Hotel Coorg Mandarin", after a long search. Nobody knows the name. Even the local's are not familiar with the name. However, it's located right opposite to the KSRTC Bus Depot. Or you can ask for Cafe Day as it's very close to that. Else, you can ask for the HP petrol bunk. Showed my booking confirmation. There was no formality required as I'd already booked my room through GoIbibo. The room was tidy and clean. There was enough space inside the room. It has a TV and hot water service through out the day. I'd nothing much to complain. The receptionist was very courteous. Made calls to my home and friends, informed them about my safe arrival. The hotel doesn't have an attached kitchen or a restaurant. I got to walk around to find some food. It has started to rain and I couldn't wander myself much. Spotted a restaurant nearby and ordered some french fries and a Fried rice. Needed to quench my thirst and bought some beverage. Came back to the room, switched on the Television sets and it was PV.Sindhu vs Okuhara Semi final for the badminton championship. Munched in the fries and gulped the beverage, served myself with the fried rice.

I parked my beast at the entrance and wanted to know whether I can park it somewhere confined. The receptionist told me to park it in the basement. Went ahead and parked him along with another Classic 350 that was beside. Asked my beast whether he's looking for a pink scooty as a companion? Well, he ain't got a choice. Came back to the room. Dozed off for the day. Here are the pictures.

Hi. Even I was facing the same issue a long time back. It would vibrate a lot if the speed exceeds 80 Km/hr. This mostly happens due to low engine oil or some maintenance issues with the engine. Now, I don't encounter this problem.

I had my tank filled in Chennai prior to the departure. The price of the petrol per litre was 59.8. Where as in Madikeri, Mysore it was 64 INR and above. The overall mileage of the beast is slightly above 35 Km/lr.

                        2. Bangalore - Mysore highway is a hell on weekends. Specially on Sunday second half. You will feel like driving with office traffic in city at a speed of 80-90KMPH. :P

                        3. Yes, I have been to Goa from Bangalore, but with another biker friend. The problem is that I have been on familiar roads for the number of times it become boring. Planning to do Rajasthan very soon solo.

                          Hi.

                          1. It used to be a treat? For me it's still better. The landscape surrounding the tollway is green. The complete stretch had less patches. Roads were being re-laid at the time when I crossed.

                          2. Undoubtedly. Well, I'm yet to complete my travelogue. During my return journey, the traffic was very heavy at this stretch.

                          3. Rajasthan? Pretty good choice. All the very best.

                            Day 2:

Madikeri - Tala Kaveri - Madikeri

I'm pretty sure that you guys would have not found the pictures of day 1 to be enthralling. I know. I would have felt the same as well. But that's how the day 1 went as I did not care much to take pictures. So, let me list out the incidents that happened on day-2.

Had a good sleep after having a rough day at roads. The average temperate at Madikeri was close to 17 degree Celsius. And I failed to close the windows, as a result it was the cold breeze that consistently kept me awake. Got up at 6am. I have this habit of going for a jog or a walk whenever I visit a new place to feel the freshness of the air. I badly needed a caffeine. Since the hotel did not have an attached restaurant, I had to walk outside to get hold of a Tea/Coffee shop. It was a pleasant morning. The showers were very mild. The fog has engulfed the entire town and the view of Madikeri is partially visible. Had to walk few metres down the road and I'm yet to spot a shop. Took some snaps of the Church that was right down the main road. Life at Madikeri was normal, just like you witness in any other major city. Found a milk parlour, half km far from the hotel. Had two coffee's. Came back to the room. Arranged my things and took my wallet to ensure I had everything. To my shock, Driving License was missing. That's not the original driving license but the extra copy. I didn't bring my original driving ID along. But I had the xerox copy. I posted this in one of the group, seeking help. Many told that the xerox copy alone is enough. But others told me that it's advisable to take a color printout of the Driving License and then to have it laminated. That sounded logical enough as the cops may always look for the loop holes.

Asked my sister to scan and send me the copy of my original Driving License, which she did within a matter of 2 minutes. Went to the shop nearby around 9 AM. Trust me, you can consider this advise. If you are planning to start a business in Madikeri, your first choice should be a Xerox shop. As soon as the shop opened, there were almost 10-20 customers within few minutes. It's not that the town doesn't have many shops but it's the requirement. Consider this if you're planning to start one on your own. Took a color print out of the license and had it laminated. Costed just 30 bucks for the lamination.

Came back to the room. I was in a complete dilemma whether to plan for Nagarhole National Park or to Tala Kaveri. Nagarhole was about 96 Kms away from Madikeri and Tala Kaveri which is less than 50 Kms. I asked people are there any other places that I can cover if I travel towards any one of the above mentioned places. Since it was raining heavily, I planned to drop Nagarhole National Park from my books, as I can cover this when I come for another visit. Took a hot shower. Walked down few metres and had Idly and Vada. Journey all set to Tala Kaveri. Filled my tank for 300 bucks and it gives me an attack whenever I see the price of the petrol above Rs. 60. In Chennai, the price of petrol per litre was 59.65. Never mind! The route to Tala Kaveri was a visual treat. Though the roads are not that steep, the landscape was visually enchanting. Plenty of pictures will be added in this post.

It took me an hour and 30 minutes to cover the 50 odd Kms since it was continuously raining. I wouldn't say it was pouring but the rain hindered me to move at a higher speed. The roads were empty since that was the last weekday. The visuals will speak for itself. It was raining since morning and I couldn't see anything other than the Tala kaveri temple's entrance. Amazing place, great location. You've got to visit this place in case you have not. Saw plenty of home stays near by Tala Kaveri. That's the kind of location you would need to stay at to feel the real ambience of nature. Bhagamandala is another temple which is visited during the return. Good tarmac roads all over, less traffic and amazing scenery.

It was 1 PM when I came back to my room and wanted to have lunch as I was craving. Went to Hotel Greenland and had Tawa Paneer Masala and Butter naan. I'll be very honest, this has been the best Paneer masala gravy I've ever tasted in my life. Happy with the lunch. Then proceeded towards Abbey falls nearby! Abbey falls is just 9 Kms away from the town. First sight of crowd that I came across in the tourist spot. As it has been raining for the past two weeks, river kaveri is in full flow. It was spectacular to see the water falling in full flow with an amazing sound! It was selfies all over the place. It took me a while to get a close look of the falls.

Came back to the room. Had some work to take care of. Finished them and the time was 8PM. It was PV.Sindhu playing her final match for the gold. Bought some Chicken strips to conclude my dinner at a nearby restaurant called Prestige Fried Chicken. Sindhu had lost her match but I was happy for the way that she played through out the olympics. Kudos!

That concludes the day 2. All I need is to have a peacefull sleep, as I need to cover few more places the next morning and head straight to Chennai.
