  • When all plans fail, just Ride it out - 11 days - Pune-Karnataka-Goa

    Prologue:

When it’s meant to happen, it will happen no matter what. This Ride was a testament to the aforesaid statement. The plans for NY 2017 was made way back in March of 2016 when one my close friends called me up and demanded I immediately book Sunburn 10 Early Bird Ticket. I was really not inclined to drink and dance 4 days but what the hell, I booked the tickets for 5 persons and that was it. My NY 2017 plans were made 9 months in advance.

But, I forgot that life can take a turn any instant. Come July, we started hearing rumors that Goa CM won’t be allowing Sunburn to happen and the venue might change. With time, rumor became reality and on November 18th Sunburn officially announced that they were shifting the Venue to Pune from Goa and those who wanted to cancel the tickets can do so and get a full refund. You can understand the frustration as all plans we made were royally screwed up.

However, despite all this I tried again to make a Plan B but sadly nothing came up and a concrete plan was never formed. From last 5 years there has always been a plan for New Year with friends but it looked like this Year it was simply not meant to be.

With December coming in faster than I expected, I finally took a deep breath and decided that I will take a tour of Karnataka and Goa on my bike. All Alone. So with this fixed in my mind, the plan unraveled within 3 days. Bookings were done as demonetization had hit hard and I didn’t want to end up in a new place handing over precious cash. I was used to solo travel but this was the first time I was going away for 11 days and for me that was a long journey to look forward to.

As usual a teaser poster before the log is approved and officially begins

    The Plan:

In simple one liner: Pune>Hampi>Coorg>Mangalore>GoKarna>Arambol>Palolem >Pune

This was supposed to be the points of rest and everything in between the places was fair game. Mangalore halt was cancelled at the last second and I directly made it to Gokarna from Coorg. Also the Falls area around Yellapur were cancelled as there was very little water in them. Other than this, nothing changed and I managed to visit all the places I originally intended to. Road conditions will be there in the Journey Details. Plan details will be given day wise and the stay details/expenses will be updated post conclusion of the Travelogue.

NOTE: Please ignore the timestamp on photos. Lazy ass like me couldn't be bothered to set the time

        Journey Log:

I started an hour late at 5:00 AM from Home. Call me lazy but it’s hard to get up that early when you sleep with butterflies in your stomach. I stopped for a second near Warje bridge as to put on my GPS. Switched off the bike and lo and behold it refused to start. My ride had barely gone 30 min and my bike refused to start. 20 min went by and the bike just wouldn’t start. I started getting negative vibes and at one point I even thought about calling the whole thing off. After what seemed like an eternity I whispered a small prayer to the Almighty and pressed the starter again. Engine roared to life, lights came back on and suddenly I felt everything would be ok with God watching over me. Started off with the morning glow slowing appearing and breaking through the mist. AH47 was deserted in the early morning and I made good speed until my first stop point. Had a small break and did some stretching and I was off towards by second point. Needless to say I managed to reach there in time and make up for the lost time thanks to the super smooth highway.

Things turned interesting post Sankeshwar which was the turn towards Gokak Falls and my entry point to Karnataka. This whole stretch has single lane 15FT normal roads with invisible “triple speed bumps”. Everywhere there were in pairs of 3 and if you noticed them too late you could expect a serious ass beating. With the sun burning up my back I managed to get to Gokak Falls at around 1:00 and just like that I had lost an hour in between and I didn’t know how. The entire reservoir is massive and the falls were barely a fraction of what they should have been in monsoon. There is a small point in the village from where you can view the entire place from the waterfall, to the reservoir to the mountains beyond. There is no decent place to have lunch nearby and you must travel towards town for food. Since I had already lost an hour, I skipped lunch and straightaway started for Badami Caves.

The road from Gokak falls to Badami Caves via Yaragatti is marginally better with lesser triple humps but not entirely absent, even the road conditions improved. The Road just before entering Badami is completely destroyed till the Badami town. The entire stretch of around 5 Kms is literally gone and sometimes it felt like I was driving on the moon. Badami Caves is beautiful in sections and needs an entire day to get around. Unlike Hampi where you can drive to most places, here you need to park and go up the mountains to the cave. I barely had patience and before i knew it i had rushed out to the caves and was back on my saddle.

Very less photos taken at Badami. I had forgotten to charge my primary point and shoot camera and the battery died soon after.

It was almost 6:30 PM by the time I started from Badami and I still had to cover 140kms till Hampi. The night drive took me through one SH after another. SH’s were in an excellent condition in Karnataka and I made good time till I joined with NH 67.

The shortcuts google took via multiple SH. All roads were similar to this

Made it to Hampi by 9:00 PM beating my own estimates. Flopped down in my stay and went off to sleep even before I knew what hit me. Just in case nobody noticed, I had skipped both lunch and dinner today due to which I reached on time and this is not something I would recommend anyone to do while riding.

This day was more on riding and less on photos.

Woke up at 6:00 AM in the morning all groggy and confused from the haphazard way I slept in. Took some time to stretch my back and arms to feel a bit free. A hot shower and an excellent breakfast at Mango Tree Hotel nearby I was ready to hit the streets of Hampi.

A guide walked up to me and insisted that I travel with his tour group for only Rs 350, I politely declined as I couldn’t be held up by a group and moreover I had my own plans. By luck a kid around 15 yrs old walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to buy photos of Hampi temple. I again declined but suddenly I was struck by an Idea. I offered the kid Rs.400 to show me around Hampi and explain the places and be with me till Sunset. I offered lunch and the bike ride free along with Rs 400. Deal was struck and I had got myself a personal guide and a photographer. Since roads are superb in Hampi, you will have no problem zooming away from one place to another.

Guys who are looking for information about Hampi as a place can visit a lot of other sites which will provide much better information than i can in this small tale, so i am skipping that for now. Enough talking, now let the pictures explain the details themselves.

I forgot to mention 3 problems which happened during the ride.

                    1. Fog lamp screws came off while on ride from Badami to Hampi. Had to resort to jugaad to fix it up until Hampi came.

                    2. My horn was custom welded on front and the bloody welding snapped off while going to Bisle Ghat on Coorg. So you can imagine the road conditions.

                    3. Rear tire hugger welding cracked and the bolts thread came off and the whole thing became loose when I was on NH66 from Mangalore to Gokarna. Had to remove it enroute and Chuck it.

Other than this nothing else came off, Thank God 😅😅

Once I have donned my black helmet, I become anonymous. My face ceases to identify me. My black visor shields others from the rigours of my passing glance while shielding me from their attempts to peer into my soul. I am an anonymous rider shrouded in black. I am no longer a specific self. I am a passing Traveller.

SJ4000 WiFi is good. When I got it 2 years back it was superb value for money. Now there are many others in the price bracket so you can choose accordingly. A short pros-cons for it.

                            Pros:
                            1. VFM - especially when you get it from outside of India. I got from US.
                            2. Shoots at full HD. Note - No 4K available.
                            3. Photos come out good. However the blues are more pronounced than other colours. So if you are near water bodies or mountains photos look awesome. If you want jungle scenery then colours look bland.
                            4. Quite a few modes to try out.
                            5. Works with all standard GoPro mounts and accessories.

                            Cons:
                            1. Horrible mobile app. If I had a negative rating then this app would get it. Worst designed app ever.
                            2. No remote management other than phone app. So essentially you don't have a monopod with remote.
                            3. WiFi transfer rate is so so slow. If you try and transfer videos you will wait an eternity for the transfer to go through.
                            4. Battery burns out quickly with full HD. Need 2 batteries on standby atleast.
Love ur Ride and keep it maintained, its what brings u safely back to home

                              Pros:
                              1. VFM - especially when you get it from outside of India. I got from US.
                              2. Shoots at full HD. Note - No 4K available.
                              3. Photos come out good. However the blues are more pronounced than other colours. So if you are near water bodies or mountains photos look awesome. If you want jungle scenery then colours look bland.
                              4. Quite a few modes to try out.
                              5. Works with all standard GoPro mounts and accessories.

                              Cons:
                              1. Horrible mobile app. If I had a negative rating then this app would get it. Worst designed app ever.
                              2. No remote management other than phone app. So essentially you don't have a monopod with remote.
                              3. WiFi transfer rate is so so slow. If you try and transfer videos you will wait an eternity for the transfer to go through.
                              4. Battery burns out quickly with full HD. Need 2 batteries on standby atleast.
Thanks for such a detailed review, could you suggest better alternatives.

The gopro 5 black is good but at 37k approx is damn expensive.
