  • Chennai - Kodaikanal - My Bull Ride

Road trips, when I initially came across this term, it rather sounded me more of an insane activity. How can a person drive for long distances in such a posture? I was not having much of orientation towards biking, but having a machine from RE was always a dream for me. I was not in sheer urgency to fulfill my dreams as I was not sure what to do with the machine without putting it in proper use. To make a point, I was not ready to tame my animal just for a day to day use, as my saying goes, Elephants are not be used for carts.

Finally I went through a lot of travelogues in XBHP and finally I felt the urge within me to start touring and post travelogues. I had spent a lot of time going through number of travelogues, a good amount of learning on Dos and Don'ts, special thanks to the XBHP team for encouraging people in touring activities in a sensible way.

Finally I had my Animal to be a part in my thirst quenching activity. I didn't want to stress it by immediately taking for long trips. Unfortunately, I had to leave India as the project demanded my presence at the client location and I had to be separated from my family (a special mention to the new member of my family).I had been waiting for a trip, but the uncertainty in the availability of me in India was dragging my plans.

I was back in India for good and started planning for the trip. A typical south Indian orthodox family seldom approves crazy ideas, but I was damn stubborn in making this happen and I wanted me to have a Bull Ride. Gave some thought on the destination and came to a conclusion as the place wasn't important but to have a good long ride to understand my animal better. Checked with my cousin and place was finalized and it was the summer retreat, Kodaikanal - Tamil Nadu. This place was specifically chosen to cover a good amount of distance and the road conditions are extremely good all the way to the hill top. Finally the dates were finalized and three bikes came into the group; 2 RE TBTS 350 and one Yamaha FZ.

It was a three day trip and we had scheduled to drive the full length on the first and the third day, while the second for tribal touring. We had covered a total of 1,161 km in three days.

Forgive me for the poor write up and the photography. We couldn't spend more time on clicking.
Some pictures as teaser, more to follow on approval of the thread.

    ODO, start of the trip.

xBHP members are insanely inspiring on a veracious account. It is more fun reading the travelogues than anything else for riders, when we are not riding. We live each others' trips here. Thanks for sharing.

You've just made the right choice. The roads were good all the way up to Kodaikanal. I hope you had an amazing time in taming the bull. Keep the ball rolling

It was all set and we planned meeting around 7.15 in the morning on Saturday near the Perungalathur railway gate. Had a quick inspection to check any loose corners with the bike, tyre pressure checked, fuel filled to half tank. Packed the essentials in the Viaterra claw bag, which was very useful while saddling the things on my Bull. I had to say a sweet goodnight to the bike and myself before we started to roll the next morning.

Bull saddled with the bag in my parking lot.

As planned we gathered at the spot fixed, had a quick review of the plan and began our journey. Our strategy was not to drive continuously for more than one and half hours as it would increase the body heat, consume as much tender coconut water as possible and eat less, which could be a hard task alas the right thing to do while on road trips.

First stop near Vikravandi toll (to break the fast - Vasanta Bhavan), few kilometers before Villupuram.
Time of halt - 9:20 Hrs to 10:10 Hrs.
Distance traveled from Home - 140 km

Broke our fast with sumptuous breakfast meal and started from there by 10.10 Hrs. We decided to stop at around 11.30 Hrs to have some tender coconut water.

          Stopped as per plan
Time of halt - 11:30 Hrs to 12:05 Hrs.
Distance traveled from Home - 275 km

We then continued the journey towards Trichy and decided to halt somewhere near Manaparai (famous for South Indian savory - Arisi Murukku Eng "Rice Twisters") for a tea and then to stop at Dindigul for lunch.
Route till Dindigul. Chennai - Tindivanam - Villupuram - Ulundurpetai - Perambalur - Trichy - Dindigul.
Stopped at Dindigul for lunch. Restaurant Dindigul Thalapakatti Briyani.

Time of Halt - 14.50 Hrs to 15:45 Hrs
Distance traveled from Home - 418 km

We were planning to reach Kodaikanal via Batlagundu, but we got a thought of taking a deviation from the normal route and try the other across villages to reach Kodaikanal. Finally decided to take the Batlagundu route as we planned to drive the Ghats in daylight to enjoy the landscapes and scenic beauty and reserved the other route for our return from Kodai.

A new bypass - To avoid the Batlagundu town.

It had rained and the weather was really a welcome feast for us in Kodaikanal. As we didn't have a hotel reservation, planned to book upon reaching Kodai and we preferred to be out from the tourist commotion. Hence preferred to stay a bit away from the Kodaikanal town. We wasted a good amount of time to finalize the Hotel and finally decided on Lilly's Valley Resort. This is located 4 km from Kodaikanal Lake. Staffs were friendly. One problem was we couldn't find any restaurants nearby but couple of restaurants from the town was ready for room service. We had checked with the resort for food service and ended up having breakfast and dinner there. Food was good and was priced appropriately.

We completed our first day of trip and rested at night amidst dense fog and chilled weather.

Resort arrival time - 19.40 Hrs
Distance traveled from home - 536 km

ODO was clicked on the next day morning before we started.
