  • An Unforgettable first long ride

Road trips are always good especially when you are riding on a bike. It will help to relax, enjoy and find yourself. Sometimes it provides you courage, confidence and teaches you that the world has no limits. Honestly my trip life starts with my love failure. I was completely lost and in deep depression. To improve the state of my condition we planned for a trip to munnar. Initially there were 6 friends and 3 bikes. But when it comes to the day of trip it was me and my buddy only. My buddy has a Honda Unicorn and mine is Apache RTR 180. We decided to take my angel for the trip.

The trip was for 2 days. We will start at Saturday evening and reach there in the night. We stay in adimali in the night and will forward to munnar in the morning. That was the plan. I checked the tire condition tire pressure, brake fluids, engine oil level and found myself satisfied. I took an extra pair of dress, charger, headsets etc. and I went to buddy’s home. I was waiting for him and he showed up after 10 minutes on his angel. His Unicorn was a new one and just had her first service. He couldn’t leave her in home. So we got ourselves a good ride. We stopped in the nearest helmet store to replace buddy’s helmet. We have a trusted fuel station in our city and we filled our tanks from there (usually in mountain areas fuel quality is not so good). We are all set and left the Palai town at 6.00 P.M. Ahead of us was the great Pala-thodupuzha high way (newly expanded one). We twist the throttle and ride between 60-65 as we don’t want to heat up the engine so badly.

The roads were in good condition and mixed with hills, slopes and corners. My buddy was the pilot vehicle as I don’t know the way. Night riding was a scary one as I don’t have much helpful headlights. Buddy’s condition was also not so good. He is familiar with the road and he keeps on riding at 55-60 even in corners. Then we took a break after 60 Kms. We bought a few orbits to keep away the loneliness in fact am singing to myself all the way from Pala. Night riding is a variety feel guys. Then the road became hard to ride as my buddy has no idea about the rest of the road. So I start riding on his right-hand side by staying on the tail. It helped for better visibility of the road. Again we took a break after Neryamangalam. We made some phone calls and my buddy out in his jacket as it started to get cold. I always ride on jacket and gloves on.

We started the engines and continued our journey. The next stop was Adimali and my friend was waiting for me there. He arranged us accommodation. We parked the bikes safely and lock it well even though they had security people. We went out for dinner in a so called “Thattukada” (fast food opens only on night). The accommodation facility was pretty good. We made some chatting and slept well.

The next day we got up early and ready for day two. Then the worst happened. It affects our entire trip.

Re: An Unforgettable first long ride

We started our journey from adimali. The next stop was munnar and the destinations were mattuppetty, marayur, kanthallur and chinnar. Chinnar was a difficult task as we have to get home before midnight. Since it was early morning the traffic was less. We stopped at Munnar town for fuelling. My buddy was the pilot vehicle and I lost him in a turn. I tried on his phone but there were no service signal. I was on the right route to mattuppetty and I decided to continue my course as we both know the plan. Then it happened. Somehow a bee got into my helmet and bites me. I got the bee out and my neck began to scratch. Suddenly I got allergic and my face and neck start swelling. I panicked a lot and search for a hospital. I was lost completely. Then I found a small health center provided by TATA for its employees and families. They provided me a lotion for the swelling. Then my buddy called me and he was at mattuppetty. I reached mattuppetty which is so beautiful. My situation became critical as my head started to spin. I found my buddy and took rest for around 2 hours in the mattuppetty dam.

Then we proceed to the top station. The road was full of snow and we have zero visibility at that time. Headlights and indicators were on and we reached the top station. Bought some carrots, chocolates and of course tea power for home. I couldn’t proceed further and we lack time for another destination. So we returned to home by putting kanthallur, marayur and chinnar as a dream.

Here are some of the pictures.

Lovely pictures and that bee sting must have hurt like hell, eh! Glad you could continue riding though. That green colour view tower brings back memories from my ride to Kodaikanal. What were the road conditions like?

Roads are good till adimali. After that you will see some poth holes but its not a big deal. On holidays it will be full of traffic and you may have to spent a lot of time to pass munnar town between 9 to 11 A.M. So the earlier will be the better..

Re: An Unforgettable first long ride

I always think leaving the dream destinations was a huge loss. We were so close to them. It haunted me a lot. So we went for another trip. This time we included Udumalaipettai as one of the destinations. This time we go with pillion. I wanted to ride all the time so my pillion was my friend who doesn’t want to ride a bike as he is new to biking. This time we ride very slowly between 45-55 KMPH. First we went to munnar, then mattuppetty. Suddenly we got a rain and we enjoyed it completely. We never get a chance to put our rain coat on. We were shaking so hard as we were all wet. We have a cup of tea and hot maize to keep away the cold. We saw a route to Kanthallur via mattuppetty on the maps. We proceed as per the map but the natives told us that the forest officials won’t let go that way. So we went back to munnar searching for a room. The rate was too high so we proceed back to adimali via Anachal Road. We stopped for tea break in Anachal and the tea shop guy told us about a cottage. We contacted them and got us a room for Rs. 1200 (4 persons). In the evening we went to see Rajakkad and went back to the cottage by night. We had food and got some sleep.

The second day plan was Marayur, Kanthallur and udumalaipettai. We went to marayur and the road will be like this:

So sweet and peaceful. Then we proceed to Udumalaipettai. Marayur to Udumalaipettai was quite a route. Good road with 2 check post and its through forest. We went on summer so it was so hot. The trip was so cool and variety experience. In the return the nature gifted us with heavy rain around 2 hrs. We have to wait till the rain is over as its full of hail.

This is how Marayur to udumalaipettai road be like:
