The bike does not matter much but yes power is needed to tackle the hilly climbs near Lansdowne and after Dugadda and almost all places. Would recommend atleast a 150cc if not more if carrying a pillion. Riding single a 125cc will do the job.
We used a Pulsar 150 and a Suzuki Swish.
Friends used Studds shifter and Motocross helmets mostly.
Gloves used were Solace Passion and Probiker ones.
Knee guards those metal ones but I won't recommend buying them. (better invest on Cramster Drifter Pro or Solace Pace or Axxis)
Personally I use a riding jacket and a Le Gear balaclava, wear a quick drying Tshirt inside. Chest and body armour of good quality is fine too. We did not use any specific boots but army boots were worn by some.
About luggage, we used the underseat storage of scooter , footboard and rest of the bags were tied to saaree guard and some were carried by pillion. We used normal bags since we were not sure of plan and wrapped them in .8mm yellow tarpolin.
