  • [Photo Feature]: xBhp Bbsr : Trip To Bhitarkanika

    Feb 18th 2017

It was a long pending road trip. The idea was to cover all in one go i.e. Bhitarkanika and Olive Ridley Turtles Nesting.

We started pretty early around 5am from Bbsr. But as you can see the fog was quite dense and visibility was 50 meter or so. The plan was to reach Khola Gate by 7am but mother nature has its own plan.

Antaryami Bhai was waiting for us in Kendrapada. we had our breakfast there.

Were lucky to see so many Animals even in February. Boat guy told us that if you want to see birds come around November- December.

But we also want to see the "Olive Ridley Turtles" beside the Habalikathi beach

Most of these Boats are 12 seater. so if you are a group of 12 then prices get split or else one have to beer it all. it's better to go with Govt boat but you know most of the time you get private one which are expensive [2500 or more]

Back to Dangmal Guest house. Food was good and nominal price.
Took a 30 min break [same place as pic 4]. then restarted our journey. We had made our reservation in Habalikathi for the night stay.

In order to reach Habalikathi one has to go back to Raj Nagar then to Gupti then leave your bike or car there only and travel by boat . But we had some other plans i.e ride all the way to Habalikathi. We took a small shortcut and came cross the other side of Gupti.

As you can see boats are quite small for all of us to cross the Brahmani river in one go. so we did in two shift. All the Boats and local guys kept as warning at all the river crossing don't stand or sit close to water or else you will be dragged to water in blink of eye.

Time was not on our side and we had to reach the seashore of Habalikathi. None of us has visited the site before leave alone on bike.

One more river crossing. Again we were reminded by the locals not to stand close to river. To our surprise there was a big croc lurking around 50 meter keeping close eye on the boat crossing. One mistake and you are his evening snack

We were running desperately to seashore. From seashore its straight road to Habalikathi. [this off road is 7-8 km long where you can maintain a good speed of 40 kmh . its only 5 feet wide with make shift wooden bridge]

Finally we reach the seashore in nick of time. This place is know as 7 Sister Temple. one have to ride 100 meter of so on the soft sand to get on beach.
Local warns to have darshan of 7 Sister Temple before going on the beach. they also told us to cover the 7 km stretch quickly as high tide was coming in.
It was fun and quite spooky to ride in dark on the beach. we were warned that wild animals roams on beach so stay clear of them. Finally we reached our spot around 7pm checked in our guest house.

Total km covered is around 210 km

Beautiful pictures man. And what luck spoting such huge crocs.
I have always wanted to ride to Bhitarnika, and might do that by this year end. Is October a good season to visit?

Also I will really appreciate if you can post the full names of all the places you visited and started from and also the routes you took. For eg. Where exactly is the spot from where you cross the river to take you bikes to the beach resort?
The names and description of the places will really help me out. And again, beautiful pictures.

                  Good Morning from Habalikathi.
These are the tents we stayed in.
The building on the right is the common dining hall and 1st floor is one of the guest house for tourist.

We went for a small morning walk. Expectation were quite high that we will surely see Olive Ridley Turtles Nesting.

Then we decided to ride to the end point of the beach.
Our bikes were parked behind those tents you saw previously. It's a hell of task to bring bike from beach to this place [100 meter of soft sand].
They have 6 common bathrooms for all guest . Again the 1st floor of the building are used for guest house [expensive ones]

To our bad luck we didn't saw any Olive Ridley Turtles. We saw different kind of fishes washed to ashore. The lower pic is of a fisher man catch though.

After settling the final bill. took a last pic of the place. They staff told us to leave the place quickly as it was time for high tide. And once tide come in we won't be able to ride on beach further will be stuck for 10 hrs or more.
Wasting no time we quickly rode back to Temple of Seven Sister.

In the temple there are Idols of 5 Goddess only .
This location comes under a places known as Satavaya [ mean 7 village]. We come to know from locals that out of 7 village 4 are already submerged in sea waters. This tells us the story about the trees we saw on the beach water. Govt are trying to relocate rest of the 3 villages to higher ground in Rajnagar [which will be done in coming 1-2 years].

Finally we reach Rajnagar and had our lunch. This was the one and only option in Rajnagar.
These forest ride are quite peaceful and relaxing. But seeing animals is purely based on luck. Two days after we left Habalikathi, Huge numbers of Olive Ridley Turtles came for Nesting.
This is the last picture thanks for watching.
