  • [Photo Feature]: When a Breakfast ride turned into a nightmare

We the Bikers, are always excited to enjoy the early morning cold mist accumulating on the visors of our helmets. This Sunday, we dreamed about the same and decided to have a first #BrakfastRide to kick off the #Newyear2018.
Though we belonged to #BenagloreBenellians group, yet we welcomed all the members from #BikerBrotherhood as we lined up around 7AM in the morning near Esteem mall-Hebbal.

The site was indeed a center of attraction with so many horsepowers were queued up, the line up included Benelli TNT300, 302R, 600i, KTM Duke, Royal Enfield etc.

We head up to the NH47 towards airport road for our breakfast point- IPC (Indian Paratha Company). It just takes 15 minutes to reach the IPC and we settled down as our helmets were getting to know each other too

Being a lover of #PunjabiFood, I ordered Makki ki roti and Sarson ka saag with Ginger tea and I must say its worth of all calories. It was an amazing feeling to see the Smoke coming out of Hot tea and loud exhausts.

We checked out the IPC around 9AM and few of us decided to go to Kamat restaurant for a short ride whereas others decided to call off the day by heading home.

The day was going well as any normal ride until we received the message about the unfortunate event happened on the same highway, a KTM RC390 rider had hit an 11-year school girl and she passed away it seems.

It's a heartbreaking news on a Sunday morning, the worst was yet to come as the villagers start protesting by blocking the highway and beating the rider by tying him to a pole. We start receiving images of all bikers being thrashed by the villagers so were advised not to go back till it settled down.

We waited for some time before deciding to take a longer route off the highway to go back to home as o ever know if the situation escalates further. It was a long nervous ride way back home as two of us left out and follow the Google maps to reach home safely.

I am not sure whos fault or whom to blame, but the day ended up with unpleasant memories.
=>Could it be a fault of pedestrian crossing the road dangerously?
=>Could it be a fault or overspeeding rider?
=>Could it be a fault of unsafe Indian roads with no proper road crossing points?
=>Could it be a fault of safety measures of the bike? (inadequate breaks, at least RC390 comes with ABS)
=>Who gives the right to the public for taking the law into their hands by beating all the other bikers and destroying expensive superbikes?
=> What part Media can play? I read one update where it was mentioned: "A biker killed a school girl while wheeling on the road". Although the last part is not confirmed by any other news/bikers/onlookers, will it not make matter worse by adding spice to the story?
All above said its responsibility to all individuals to take care of each other to make the road safer.

This issue has blown up into a political drama and the law shall take its course, but both parties were at fault.
If that deceased child ran across the road or not into the biker's path is immaterial, if the biker/whoever was slow enough (for a village area), he could have braked and swerved at the very least to minimize damages to both sides. Having said that, jaywalking is a problem our country faces as a whole.
I don't expect an 11 year old kid from city outskirts/village to know traffic rules when the educated ones here don't, but it's high time villagers stopped using this as an excuse. There has to be a stringent rule that applies universally to one and all.

In any case, pedestrians always have right of way.

What happened after that, the so called mob fury/justice was uncalled for. All those people belting bikers must be put in jail. But Nandi hills on a Sunday is the worst place to go to. Villagers must have had pent up anger due to the antics of these hooligans and this accident killing a child just was enough for them to (wrongfully) let loose.

I'm glad you made it safe. It's sad that due to a few idiots, the riding gear wearing majority is termed as "RACER" and beaten up.

Sad stuff all around I think. A similar situation prevailed a few years ago near Lavasa here in Pune. Thank goodness these incidents are sporadic and I caution my fellow riders to slow down and be extra vigilant especially in village areas and towns that crop up along the highway. How many times have we come across that shitty moment when some joker suddenly appears from behind a shrub on the median and decides to make his miserable move to cross the seemingly open highway without any care in the world. It is becoming clear that motorists survive on the pure goodwill of the other motorist or pedestrian and this is a recipe for disaster. It is sad that the simplest of education as to how and where one should cross a road cannot be learnt in our country in this modern age.

It wasn't a case of jay walking kid on highway. The girl was riding pillion on another bike to which this KTM went and banged into from the rear, the kid was thrown off and died. Some other Samaritans chased this KTM biker who fled the scene and got to bring him back to the scene. He was tied down till cops arrived. While what people may have done was wrong. I still feel the rider has to be aware of the traffic around him, and slow down near junctions. Accidents happen, if he had stopped and offered to take kid to hospital or surrendered to cops things may have not panned out bad for name of bikers.

Also, India doesn't have special licence norms for higher power vehicles, KTM390 produces almost 226PS/ton and a lot of people really don't know how to handle such bikes.

There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

Re: When a Breakfast ride turned into a nightmare

The fact that kid was on other bike is a very surprising revelation. If I am not wrong hitting from behind will put rider at fault. As far as my understanding of the law goes rider/driver is responsible for maintaining appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead of them. I could be wrong but that is what my driving school instructor taught me when I was learning to drive.
Manzilon ki talash mein na jane kitne fasle tay kar liye. Sukoon ki talash mein na jane kitne raste tay kar liye.
Palat ke dekha in raston ko, to jeene ke maine samajh aaye. Bas phir kya tha.... humne raaston ko hi apni manzil bana liya

You are right.. The rider's responsibility should increase proportional to the power of the bike. But, very few people realize this fact.
