  • Two friends on Two-Wheelers: Fazer 25 & Duke 200

It was in the month of May, 2017 we last went for a long ride. There were a few short ones but they were not enough to satiate our hunger. Few plans were made and cancelled. Meanwhile I got transferred, had to settle at new office, travelled Deoghar and Chennai in November and December with family. And in between all these, what I was missing the most was riding.

My friend bought himself an upgrade in the form of brand new Fazer 25 from his old fazer v1. He was eager to try his new machine on a long ride. And suddenly all the pieces of puzzle fell in places and a plan was made overnight.

And here we came riding after a long and distressful 8 months.....

The plan was to start early, but weather god had other plans. There were forecast of light raining, and it WAS raining in the morning. But I was in no mood to refrain myself. So I start at 8:30 when the rain stopped with much resistance within the family. The road was calling me, how can I ignore?

The last time we visited Purulia, we took the Durgapur-Barjora route. This time we took the Raniganj-Mejia route. The journey till Raniganj was fairly uneventful with riding along the NH2 with an average speed of 80kmph.

Raniganj is famous for coal mines and the roads are full with Trucks, Dumpers carrying coals to their destinations. We slowed a lot in the traffic and following a number of trucks reach the Mejia bridge on river Damodar. Mejia is a nearby thermal power plant whose coal is supplied from Raniganj through this bridge by rail and road. No passenger train moves along this route, only coal supply wagons.

We stopped there for some photo shooting. There had been some complaints from my friend regarding very few photos en route. I too agreed with him, cause I tend to cover as many places as possible which leaves very little time to shoot pictures on the way. But this time was different. I signalled him to stop for photos and he more than happily obliged.

Thank you for your sincerity. We took proper pre-caution before entering the railway track. But that was a risk taken nonetheless. Will be careful from now on.

Re: Two friends on Two-Wheelers: Fazer 25 & Duke 200

Then we started towards Raghunathpur. Actually, the plan was to cover three places: Banda, Telkupi and Deulghata but not missing the fun of riding. So we took the Mejia-Saltora route and the nightmare road began.

In a bid to improve the infrastructure and roadways, the Govt is converting a lot of 2 lane state highways to 4 lanes. But before converting, a lot of preparations are going on. One of these is breaking the old tarmac and keep the road that way for a few weeks. Unfortunately we happen to travel in between these weeks when the road is at its worst condition. Till Raniganj our average speed was around 80 kmph, till Mejia 67 kmph, but when reach Saltora it came down to 48 kmph. Valuable time was lost in transit for which we had to re-think about Deulghata and finally had to cancel it.

But not all was bad. On our way we found a beautiful viewpoint with the Biharinath hill at the backdrop. I immediately signalled him to stop, so he did and the results are below.

What a funny moment it was, clearly defining the fun and masti of riding together.

After Saltora the road was butter smooth, the result of newer tarmac could be clearly seen. Once again we picked up speed. The road was beautiful with few hillocks here and there. Seeing one such hillock on the right side, I remember a village named ‘Bero.’ There was a temple at the base of a hill with a pond nearby. Not a popular place, but I somehow liked it from photos available in the internet. So checked map and found the directions towards it.

Bero was off the highway and a village road connects it with the main road. The village was a beautiful one. It is hard to explain the uniqueness of this place. The village is surrounded by hills and the hills are surrounded by the village. There are total 5 hills and the area is known as ‘Panch Pahari’ aka 5 hills. Of these 5, the outermost was the one we were looking for. After asking some local people we found the temple and the hill.

It was a beautiful place. The mighty Garhpanchkot hill was visible at far and the small bero hill on the opposite side, with a newly coloured temple at its base. The detour was very comforting for the mind as well as the eyes. That’s the beauty of riding a bike. It can take you places you would not venture normally.

Well done. The picture of the Temple with the lake in front sure looks like a tranquil place. Glad you took the decision to cancel your ride to Deulghata as riding is all about the journey and not a destination

Re: Two friends on Two-Wheelers: Fazer 25 & Duke 200

The detour took a long time, we sat there admiring the beauty, chat a little and finally moved ourselves.

The road took us across small villages with unfamiliar landscapes. Little to big stones here and there surrounded by red soil. I had always dreamt of riding on such village roads. Many a times during train journeys, when I happen to see such a place, I used to murmur, how it would be like to ride or drive there. This ride made this possible and it's like dream coming true.

Suddenly, out of nowhere we found a place with many small stones lying around, as if they were taking rest after playing a game. It may sound like over imagination, as I could not capture the scene right. But that place was very interesting nonetheless.

Then again we reached Saltora-Raghunathpur road and headed towards our next destination: Banda. Another hidden gem in Purulia, having a beautiful temple in a forest. The direction was easily available in google maps, and the roads were eager to let us reach there smoothly. We spot the temple easily.

The Banda Temple is one of many ancient Jain temples built in Purulia and only among a few still standing. It is the only temple having a stone amalaka at the front. Situated in a forest and surrounded by Palash trees, it surely would be a treat to the eyes in the spring season. Too bad, I was early to the party. But there is always the next time.

By the time we completed Banda Temple it was well past 2 in the noon. We left the plan for Telkupi too as there was no eateries nearby to put the fire in our stomach out.

We came back to Raghunathpur. After asking 2-3 people about a good restaurant we had our lunch and took some rest.

Exactly. I used to plan to cover as many places as possible but now I realised what a bad decision it was. The infrequent stops and detours give us much more cherishable memories than the so called attractions. It is rightly said: Manjil se badkar hai yeh raste.
