• Impulsive Spiti - 2018

Prologue:
It was 8.40 AM, we were climbing slowly, very slowly, around 15-20 kmph, with great difficulty, I could still see 2-3 uphill bends, at 4500mtrs this was highest point of my whole trip. Air was thin, oxygen less, my motorcycle was gasping for breath, then the doubt crept in my mind, was it a mistake to bring this motorcycle to Kunzum Top, with all luggage-saddle bags, tank bag and a pillion.
It was cold outside but there was sun too, same was happening with thoughts in my mind, sometime dark sometime bright, again uphill turn, loose soil everywhere, rocks, losing my momentum every time, full throttle in first gear until 5k RPM, second gear no juice left, Kunzum Top still 3 KMs.
Snow capped mountains, gentle breeze whispering in my ears – you have come till this point, you will surely go through this, with difficulty but eventually you will come out victorious. I smiled, short lived smile, HRTC bus honked with élan breaking my thought process, with curve ahead, no momentum I had to stop to give it side, now what? Will my machine die on me or will it take me through to more and more beautiful places far and high?

Tanked up near NDLS railway station and started journey at 11.30 AM, stopped for lunch in Murthal , had nice lunch of rice , daal , curry and Lassi, by evening we crossed Chandigarh and were nearing hils, first sight took all our tiredness away, it started drizzling and hot tea in that weather was awesome.
Reached Solan by the night 9 PM, Solan was too crowded for our liking but there was no option, all hotels where full, we got one and crashed for night.

DAY 2 – Solan - Tapri
We started early and fresh, we had our breakfast after rustling bustling Shimla, enjoyed the vistas and views, whole day as uneventful, we enjoyed sceneries enroute, weather was cool, windy and slight drizzling. Enjoyed good food and company to calm and warm people, that’s what I love about Himachal, welcoming and warm people, good weather and best food. Crossed Rampur and we were early to stop in Sarahan and decided to go ahead, that was mistake as there is no single hotel after that till Sangla as per the locals. We entered Kinnaur and encountered famous rocky roof mountains (shown in Highway movie), luckily, we got only hotel at Tapri at last - after last night ride we didn’t want to ride in night, took hotel in Tapri at 6 PM, enjoyed local bazar and called it a day.

Beautiful Tapri Petrol Pump

DAY 3 – Tapri-Karchcham-Sangla-Chitkul-Karchcham-Kalpa
From today onwards the journey was to become more interesting with more vivid sceneries, we started form Tapri at 8 AM and reached Karchcham Dam to take right diversion towards Sangl/Chitkul, the roads were broken but scenes were awesome, we stopped at Sangla for breakfast and then proceeded towards Chitkul, we went till last barrier after that we were denied any further, so we decided to park bike on road and go towards river flowing downhill near mountains, spent 2 hours near water and then came back to Chitkul Village for lunch , after lunch we traced back to morning route and by evening we were crossing powari-Roads were bad between karchcham and Powari in some places ( stones being blasted and road clearing process, new roads being laid and so on), but most part roads were good and we reached Reckong Peo turn at around 5 PM, we went ahead and enquired peo petrol pump and got to know that it is opened 24/7.We retired for the day in a beautiful Tab Exotic hotel in Kalpa, which had nice view of Kinnaur Kailash ranges.

DAY 4 – Kalpa-Pooh-Khab-Nako-Tabo
Early start and got chance to see magnificent Kinnaur Kailash range in morning sun, there were bad roads again till pooh, which slowed us down, breakfast break at spillow, nice small place, stopped at sangam of Spiti and Satluj river at khab. Started climbing up towards Nako and scenery started changing, Impulse was having difficulty in breathing but it pulled nicely, Lunch at Nako, enjoyed views , Nako lake, Nako monastery and Helipad and started our ride for Tabo. Famous Malling Nalla was dry , less snow this year so most water bodies were dry, crossed chhango and sumdo to reach Tabo, most of the roads were tarred and good till this time. Took nice home stay called Kesang besides Tabo Monastery and called it for the day, homely cooked food was best in trip, the owners were too good a host, very nice and highly recommended. Bonded with fellow travelers over dinner and slept tight.

Hi xfiasco,

Any carburetor or air flow related modification is being done before starting this ride. I am not very much technically sound person, but I do own Impulse from last 5 years and read multiple thread here in xBhp where people took Impulse to mighty Himalaya found mostly these changes.

Nice write up waiting for more to add.

Hi harsh, thanks for reading, I do felt some power loss around KUNZUM pass( which was heighest point of journey) but rest of journey was all OK with pillion, I guess for more height ( like khardung la ) trouble may start, but for SPITI it was all good, I didnt do that wire in carb tectic I wanted to check its performance on stock!!!
I guess if you are alone you may not feel it at all.

DAY 5 – Tabo-Dhankar-Kaza-Kibber-Key-Kaza
Started morning by visiting Tabo Monastery and prayer in the morning, after breakfast started for Dhankar monastery en route Kaza, you need to deviate from main road to go 7 Kms up and come all the way on same road to go to kaza. After visiting beautiful Dhankar Monastery we reached kaza by lunch, took lunch in market and stayed in home stay on kaza-manali road, after taking small break we started for key-kibber road, first enjoyed nice view at kibber and then visited key monastery, spend time till evening that was very beautiful place. Came back to kaza and spent time in kaza bazar, which was full of tourists, first we thought of staying two days in Kaza but due to crowd we dropped it and planned to stay at Losar next day.

DAY 7 – Losar-Kunzum Top-Batal-Chandertaal

This day was test day for both riders as well as bike, highest point of trip Kunzum Top, with broken roads it was very difficult to gain momentum on steep inclines, but bike didn’t disappoint me , it parked itself on Kunzum Top, 18 KMs from Losar, after started descent towards Batal, took right towards chandertall , crossed 2 medium type nallahs( thank god for 400 rs boot, nothing can beat that during water crossings) , reached chandertaal by 11 , took a tent at our friend Jamaica and after filling our tummy with heavy breakfast, we started ascend for chandertal, more 3 KM from tenting site there is bike/car parking, after that need to walk for 5-600 mtrs, it was tiring , but views after that was simply breathtaking, we enjoyed scenes till evening, met with a friend of my friend( identified him with his Himalayan), we all came back and enjoyed evening in tent, it was too windy and chilly evening, we all discussed about most dreaded road of Spiti circuit which we would be taking next day Batal-Gramphoo stretch of 60 KMs which takes more than 6 hrs to complete with almost 20 water crossings, we bid adieu to each other to start early, good to get company on that roads.

DAY 8 – Chandertaal-Batal-Chhatru-Gramphoo-Palchchan

We started sharp 6.30 AM after light breakfast to avoid more water in water crossings, with great great difficulty we completed initial 20 kms, with so many water crossings, but with good company we were able to cross all hurdles without any problem, it started feeling like fun to all of us, by 10 we were in Chhatru, stopped for 1 hr and enjoyed heavy breakfast and tea( half battle won), by 12 we were near Gramphoo, all chhota dhara/bada dhara were conquered ( only god knows why it is called chhotadhara when it is sooo huge water crossing), landscape started changing again from dry to greenery, touched tarred road after 4 days, everyone was happy, now ascend to always crowded Rohtang Top, crossed it, started drizzling on Rohtang Top, after descending we stopped for tea 13 KM before Gulaba, Stopped for the day near Palchchan, as we wanted to avoid Manali rush, we all celebrated that evening our Spiti circuit completion.

This was un eventful and warm day, our friends bid adieu to us as they had to reach Delhi on that same day, we started late around 9 AM after breakfast, whole day was just chasing trucks and traffic after Manali, we stopped for night in Chandigarh tired, dusted due to heat.
