  • Project : Solo Wheels :- 32,000 Kms | 150 Days | 3 Countries | 1 Rider

    Hey all !!

    Holiday Greetings !!

“Routine is the enemy of time”

This quote by Jedidah Jenkins who has travelled 7000 miles in the American sub-continent on a bicycle was just stuck in my head for the past few months .It just stuck me that I am turning 30 in a couple of months and I am nowhere near to fulfilling my life dream :- A Pan India Road trip on a bike . How did the time go by so fast ?? and how did i forget that the very motivation behind all those sleepless nights at work and at school/College was to eventually go on a such a trip. And now I am starting to realise that its not sustainable to keep switching Jobs every one and a half year ,once I get done with roaming around the near by places wherever I am located. ( 3 Jobs and a Post-graduation degree in the last 8 years) . I don’t want to spend my old age in regret of places not seen ,food not tasted and people not met.Quest for newer lands kept me restless and disturbed.

On the eve of my 30th Birthday, November 5th 2017; i had “The Talk” with my Manager .

Few hours later, folks at the office asked : Hey congrats !!, “ So Where are you going next ??” (Implied : Which company / location)

    I said:” Everywhere !!”

Solo Wheels is a bike trip I am about to Embark upon from February 10th , 2018 . The plan is to cover the entire India , parts of Nepal and Bhutan on my CBR-250 ( The fury ) . The aim of this trip to explore every landscape and experience every culture these countries has to offer. Yes-Just for the heck of it !!.But I don’t want to just visit the touristy places, click pictures ,tick the boxes and come back . I wanted to make sure that this trip cover all the off beat locations or as a traveller would say –“The hidden gems” as well . After all , Robert frosts poem about the” road less travelled” has to be taken literally as well .For this I decided to float Google form online to my friends to give their inputs . The questionnaire was designed to bring out these locations as well . And Voila !! after 3 weeks I have 800 + location entries throughout these countries. .Request you guys as well to fill up this form to make this dream ride of mine the biggest milestone of mine.

I am hoping to share the pictures and experiences of these places during the trip in this thread along with the pre-ride planning and preparation part so that it might be useful for someone else as well.

More about the trip, preparations , about me and other details post approval .

                    Solo Wheels: Day Minus 20

Thanks a lot guys ,for the wishes and the encouragement

The pre-ride Jitters have definitely kicked in.Its a mix of weird feelings like “What the heck am i about to do “ and “Yaay !! I am almost there, of living the dream“ . Sometimes one overpowers the other, but it’s sort of in a harmonious balance now . I am still in my notice period at work . So office + pre ride planning is keeping me occupied.

                    Route /Itinerary planning:

Thanks to all of your inputs to the google form posted , now I have a list of about 800 + destinations across our country. Removing duplicates and finding the exact locations of few of the places have been a bit of tough work. Since Google maps (And even the other free ones available) can only take a limited number of destinations (Cause may be nobody has ever tried this ? ? ) , routing had to be split into different zonal geographies. Considering the first 300 entries to the Google doc , the route looked somewhat like this :

                    # Inner me : Gosh !! My Country is Huge #

I have decided to keep the google doc live throughout the journey so that everyone out there can keep pouring their suggestions (Some body from Madhya Pradesh please ) . I will also be adding more points in between based on secondary research as well as word of mouth suggestions on the way. So the final route might turn out to be way more complex

                    Bike Mods and Accessories

Serious stuffs -Yes, countless hours have been spent watching You tube videos and reading blogs and articles on how to get the ultra long Touring set up right. I will be listing the complete set of accessories ,gears and mods before I start off. The agenda of all the research was to get the principles right, which I found was to Pack as light as possible and keep the set ups as simple as it gets . And to make things easier I had to keep the expenses in check, because every penny spent before the ride s means less kms/Days on the road. Hence even for seemingly irrelevant things, hours of scrutiny has been put(Some times leading to what people say an “Analysis-Paralysis” ).

However if things go well , i should be ready in two week’s time .I have planned to do some chotu weekend rides post that , to check the overall set up and may be fine tune. Rest i leave it to the ride to teach me what and what not to be done on such a trip . Will keep everyone here posted.

                    Thanks once again

This was something which I had experienced as well. There is a place call Hemnagar in on of the remotest places of the country. I had written a travelog(you can find it in my signature) and was at loss while trying to give a screenshot of the same. Hemnagar did not have any existence on Google Map while I was writing my
                        log!
Now you can find it with a bit of effort.
