Pre-ride discussion:
After a brief mail discussion, on Thursday night Nidhi expresses his urgency to ride to Gokarn on phone. With my dad leaving to blr, my mom and grandmom would be alone, so I say no to the ride. After more discussion at home, I'm free to ride. Vicky jumps in as usual.. by friday 3 guys are confirmed.
By friday afternoon calls are on about how we could do this trip. The problem with us is; after we (me and Ashvin) shifted to Pune, we rarely get to ride together tho' we ride to a certain place, we come in from either direction. So, Nidhi suggests we come to Hubli and ride together from there. It was 450 kms for both of us. I was able to leave a little early from work, so I had to reach Hubli first and look for accomodation. Nidhi planned to leave around 6, and Vicky was uncertain about when he would be done with work.
Day 0: Friday: 29th May
I got late packing and leaving from office. I ended up leaving Pune at 7:15pm. Nidhi had left on time and both of us were belting our way towards Hubli. I have quick dinner at Satara. At about 11:30pm I had just entered Karnataka. I got a call from Nidhi that he had to stop over at Davangere for 45 minutes as he had problems with his sparkplug. After some time I get news from Vicky that Simha and him have left Blr at 9pm and are in two minds about staying at Shimoga. Kolhapur-Belgaum-Hubli was awesome. The moon was hiding behind the hills. The roads were wet and had a jewel look. The weather was cool. This still remains my favourite stretch on NH4. I reach Hubli at 1:30am and hunt for accomodation. Most places were booked due to some big marriage party. I finally find a lodge after 30 min (the 7th one after lodge hopping). I dump my luggage. I get a call from Nidhi that he has reached Hubli outskirts and is again facing sparkplug problems. Nidhi, at Davangere waited for the engine to cool a bit, pulled the spark plug out while wearing gloves, and dropped it on its head by mistake. I went to meet Nidhi. Just as we though we'd get working on the bike, the bike started!.. we were all smiles, and we zipped through the lovely streets of old Hubli.
We got to the lodge.. got talking..we got a call from Vicky at 2:30am that they now plan to ride all the way. We updated them about the spark plug situation and decided to stay back at Hubli. The weather that night is pristine to ride in though. We talk till 4am and hit the sack.
Day 1: Saturday: 30th May
We wake up at 6am and decide that we should sleep some more and get the spark plug replaced. We get up at 8, have breakfast and head to a service station to get a new spark plug for Nidhi's bike. We leave Hubli by 10 and take the Yellapur-Ankola route to Gokarn. This is top-quality tarmac for a ghat road. After about 40 kms we take our first break.

As we approached Yellapura, we decided to explore a trail. The first one we took was very nice and kept going deeper and deeper. At the end of the road were banana plantations. There was a guy working there with two kids. We tried to ask around to see what's ahead in each direction. We were looked at with raised eyebrows. The guy was curious as to why people dressed like us have come into the forest and are interested in knowing whats deeper. We try our best to tell him that we are just exploring these areas for fun. However, the man is pretty reserved. So, we decide to head back and take a few pics on the way.

We head further on the highway and do good speeds all the way down the ghat with wide sweeping curves. As we get lower, the humidity increases and we are sweating under our jackets. Nidhi spots a tender coconut vendor and we guzzle a few down.

[Srinidhi]
We try calling up Vicky but there's no response. From here we ride straight to Gokarn. We find Vicky and Simha sleeping peacefully. They rode all night, reached in the morning, guzzled a few beers (in the morning!!) and went to bed. We woke them up. All of us had lunch and got talking. The weather was really hot outside, so we stayed indoors. Without much thinking, we took bath and slept. In the evening, we headed to Om beach. Spent some time at Namaste Cafe. We later decided we need to go to some place that's more fun. We rode up a hill near Kudle beach. The half moon gave and winds gave us just the right ambience. We sat by the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea.

After a few hours of chitchat we were driven away by mosquitoes. We were back by around midnight and had late dinner. We hit the sack late at 3am.
Day 2: Sunday: 31st May
All of us get up really late. The weather outside hasn't improved. We get ready but are in no mood to head out. 5 minutes outside and we are all sweaty. So, we stay back, have breakfast, watch TV and chitchat. After a while, we again feel like heading out. So, we go to Gokarn town and have lunch. We head to the hotel where Vicky and I had lovely 'buns rotti' last year.

[Vicky]
During lunch we plan things for the evening. Vicky suggests a trek from Om to Kudle beach. Once we go out of the hotel, the heat puts us off again. We head back to the room to watch MotoGP. After MotoGP and a light round of sleep, it's activity time.

[L-R: me & Simha]
We head to Om beach and begin trekking towards Kudle, along the sea.

And we take a route which looks like this..

After some distance we encounter a little tunnel around thick vegetation which ultimately was a dead end.

[F-B: Simha, Vicky & Nidhi]
We back track and head further down towards the sea and begin crossing along the stones. We proceed to a point where there's a large cliff. Nidhi braves further, surveys the area and finds a path up.

The rest of us stay back to watch where he goes. Finally after climbing up he waves to us. I am reluctant to go there. Simha is in two minds as his foot was slipping badly as the plastic slippers were not good. We toss a 2 re coin. I win, and we decide to head back as it started getting pretty dark. Nidhi finds another way around and joins us in 5 min. He is completely overjoyed with what he's done and we still have a blank shocked expression on our face.

When we reached Om beach, it was completely dark. We again killed some time at Namaste Cafe and discussed future plans. Nidhi tempts everyone with Neer-dose at Agumbe. Vicky needed some convincing as he was in party mood at Gokarna and wanted to laze around. We tossed a 5 re coin. I won again, but Vicky still said no. His exact words were 'illa illa .. beda .. beda .. hehehe hehehe' (the 1.1K rpm idling laughter). The plan to ride at night to Agumbe is cancelled. So, we head to the town and tank up. Then we head to Gokarna beach and spend some time till about 11. We have some tea and ride back through the little winding streets. We have quick dinner, pack all our bags and hit the sack by 1.
Day 3: Monday: 1st June
We leave by around 7am and head south on NH-17. We have breakfast at Kumta and stop later at Marvanthe for tea.

We take a left at Hemmadi, pass through Halady towards Someshwar and Agumbe. It's a lovely narrow road flanked by vegetation on both sides. Vicky and Simha rip through and go ahead while Nidhi and I do moderate speeds admiring the forest. This time Nidhi spots a trail and we head in. But this one was quite short and lead to a little settlement inside. Not wanting to surprise more people we head back.

We reach the base of Someshwara ghat to find Simha and Vicky waiting for us under the shade.

[L-R: Nidhi, Vicky, Simha]
After some time, we head up the ghat and stop enroute for a quick pic.

We reach Agumbe and munch a constant stream of 'Neer-dosa'; a very light dosa which somehow doesn't seem to fill one's apetite. After that the others have lunch. We head to a katte near the Inspection Bungalow. The clouds quickly flow in and it starts raining for a while. Finally, after 2 days of brutal heat we get wet.

Vicky suggests we head to Barkana falls. The weather gets even better. We are engulfed in fog and we can't see a thing.

With some local guidance we are pointed in the direction of Barnaka. Without wasting further time we head through this trekking route. Initially it's a mud road 5-6 feet wide. We come across cut trees with their trunks lying across the route. We ride over the smaller ones and lift our bikes across the larger ones. The R15 needed help on most occassions but Simha held it really well. This really wasn't R15 territory but he made it look like cake-walk. As we headed further the vegetation got thicker and thicker. It got to a point where the route was just a couple of feet wide and about three storeys high. It was very dark here. The bar-end weights brushed through the vegetation on both sides. There was no looking back here and we just carried further. At one point, a couple of trees were cut which made some room. Till this point there was a constant drizzle, which stopped for a moment. I pulled my camera out to take a quick photo.

At this point, there was tree trunk where we had to lift our bikes across. Vicky's bike was stuck at the back. As Nidhi went to help him, Vicky noticed a lot of leeches in the area. Infact, later we realised that we all were in for some major leech trouble. Having come this far, we quickly got our act together and continued further. We crossed tree trunk after tree trunk, to finally come across a mammoth trunk hanging 6 to 8 inches above ground level. We were in no position to lift our bikes a foot and a half and get it to the other side. We had cramsters too!. Nidhi decides to wade through the vegetation on the side and get around the tree. After a few turns and some hard attempts he makes it. Vicky follows. Simha follows on the R15 and I come in last. A turn later we reach the viewing point.!.. what a relief.. we were overjoyed. Nidhi took a little video and we took plenty of photographs.

Barkana falls is that narrow stream right in the middle of the pic. More than the falls, we were amazed by the moving clouds and the view of the hills and the forest. We were treated with a different view every minute. But soon we were reminded of the leeches which were thirsty for our blood. We had to head back soon, and get back to the 'katte' at the Inspection Bungalow and check ourselves thoroughly.
The ride back was in all energy. We were fast and probably made it back in half the time. We dashed to the katte and started checking all our clothes. We spent more than an hour pulling each and every leech out. They were everywhere. On our bikes, near our luggage etc. After a painful clean up operation, we headed back for some more snacks. We left Agumbe at 4:30pm.
We still had plenty of distance to cover. The bangalore guys had to head back home and attend work. I had initial plans of leaving Agumbe around noon and riding back all the way to Pune. Now, since it was 4:30, we had to plan everything out again. We headed to Sringeri, got our chains tightened. We passed through Kudremukh towards Horanadu. It was late evening now and we got to see some lovely scenery enroute.

And the sky was really pretty

After the Horanadu junction, we just had one tea break. Nidhi wanted to get back to Bangalore as quickly as possible. The ghat roads were all wet. My bike was the slowest as I was running dirt tyres. Simha's R15 was the fastest and was taking on all 3 karizmas on most occassions. Simha rode really well on this stretch and stayed ahead. After tea, Nidhi and I decided to start off quickly as our high beams were pointing at different angles. I was slow and Nidhi gave me company a few bike lengths behind me. Our headlights worked together and lit up the road well. We did extremely good speeds on the ghats, rode nonstop and reached Belur at 9:45pm. From here we reached Hassan. At Hassan, Simha called us. Vicky and Simha had just reached Belur. Vicky, Simha and I stayed back at Hassan while Nidhi continued towards Bangalore and reached pretty late.
Day 4: Tuesday: 2nd June
We were all up by 6:30am, ready by 7:30. We had breakfast. Vicky and Simha left Hassan at around 8, and reached before 11am. I repacked my luggage expecting rain on the way back to Pune. I left at around 10am. The route I took as suggested by Vicky was Hassan-Arsikere-Kadur-Birur cross-Hosadurga-Chitradurga. This was about 200 kms. Pretty scenic, but with lots of villages with big speedbreakers, a couple of which I happily flew over. I reached Chitradurga by 1:30pm. Had lunch at Davangere. The heat on NH4 was tearing me apart and I was really bored to ride back to Pune after all these adventures. At Haveri, the weather got more pleasant.

As I crossed Hubli it began to rain. I could see rain pouring to my left and later on Nh4 as well. The sky changed and there was new-found enthu to reach Pune in full speed.

As I crossed Vantamuri ghat after Belgaum, I stopped along the bridge over the backwaters of Hidkal dam to take a few snaps of the setting sun. I took a few more as I entered Maharashtra.

I had dinner at Sai fast food just past Kolhapur and rode nonstop for 3 hrs to reach Pune by 12:15am.
I finally put my Mp3 player to use and heard some good music on my way back. This is my first trip where I utilized my mp3 player well while riding. I matched the pace of the song with the pace on the road and distances were covered without effort. I still felt quite fresh when I reached Pune after about 800 kms. I had a cuppa at Jijai, at Chandni chowk and headed home.
Hope you enjoyed this little trip-log.
Cheers,
Praveen
